Our society feels that transwomen are mentally disturbed men and trans men are mentally disturbed women. Men, however, have always been much more threatening, the sex that one must be hyper aware of on a pretty continuous basis.
These attitudes run under the surface thoughts of people. They are cultural attitudes that are so very taken for granted that the average person never really really thinks about them.
Ultimately, it's the subconscious's prioritizing of threats. It's a brain stem, 'animal’, automatic decision.
People feel these things with never a conscious thought. If the subject is brought up they excuse them with the common rationalizations that they have heard from others.
With all that said, there seem to be more trans men because of other people being less threatened by them. That makes it much easier for them to live as their true selves.

Society’s less violent towards trans men than women. Trans men face the issue of people not taking them seriously and people thinking of them as just “dumb girls”, trans women get physically assaulted and verbally attacked by strangers.
They’re still seen as men, so they get treated like men who act too girly. They get attacked.
