Meet the adorable orphan lamb Sweet Pea and discover why her true story has become a picture book phenomenon and enchanted readers of all ages! One cold winter night, Sweet Pea the orphan lamb becomes very sick. Everyone in the farmyard is worried about her! Under the watchful care of Farmer John, Laddie the sheepdog, and Dr. Alison the mobile veterinarian, she slowly recovers. Dr. Alison tells Sweet Pea she can have a sleepover to celebrate as soon as she is well again. When the day finally comes, her closest friends Sunny, Prem, and Violet join her in the greenhouse for a fun and imaginative "SheepOver" celebration. This charming story of caring and friendship by farm owners John and Jennifer Churchman, brought to life with John's entrancing photo-illustrations, will enchant readers young and old. In the words of one of her many fans, "Sweet Pea brings a calming, authentic joy to my life that makes me laugh, cry and gives me hope that all is well in the world. . . . Everyone needs a little Sweet Pea in their lives!"
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
PreS-Gr 2-Inspired by a true story, this picture book debut tells the story of Sweet Pea, a lamb who is very sick. Everyone in the farmyard is worried, including Farmer John, who takes quick action by summoning Vet Alison to treat Sweet Pea's injured leg and fever. She promises Sweet Pea that when she is fully healed a special treat awaits her in the greenhouse: a sleepover with all of her farm friends. Sweet Pea and the other farm animals like many of the same things young children enjoy when sleeping over at friends' houses such as eating delicious food, dressing up, dancing, and listening to bedtime stories. Photo-illustrations offer readers comical close-ups of Sweet Pea and her pals combined with digitally manipulated backdrops that lend the tale a fantastical feel. Text incorporates dialogue and uses refrains to show the anthropomorphized farm animals' concern for Sweet Pea and celebration for her recovery. Sweet Pea is a cutie, but there are far better farm-themed options available. VERDICT Not an essential purchase.-Samantha Lumetta, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OHα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. I love this board book. It has beautiful artwork and a fun storyline. I love that we can check in with sweet pea and friends on farmer johns Facebook page.

Sweet Pea captured my love and attention from my first glance at the cover! Who wouldn't love her cute pink nose, mouth just ready to bleat 'Bah' and those sparkly eyes? And, her ears are all ready for listening to the news of everyday life on her farm. For me, books for children should be educational as well as entertaining. And, hopefully it will also teach the little ones about at least one of life's lessons. Poor Sweet Pea is sick and unable to get to her feet. Farmer John calls Vet Alison for help. Yes, Sweet Pea has a temperature and one other injury and she needs to be quiet. Vet Alison is such a smart lady as she recognizes Sweet Pea needs a friend for company during her recuperation.. Reminds me of the expression 'a friend in need....'. Alison also promises Sweet Pea a celebration when she gets well. And, this Sheep Over is quite the event for all of the animals on the farm... In addition to being bright and colorful, the photo-illustrations are absolutely adorable. The text is interactive and educational for the little ones in your 'circle' . More importantly, the farm animals show compassion and caring when they realize Sweet Pea is sick...absolutely heartwarming. And, how happy they are when learning she is better! The younger ones will be able to learn the sounds that many animals make on the farm. There is an owl, a rooster, a goose, a duck, a turkey, hens, a cat and some dogs. The author recommends this book for ages 3 - 6 and Preschool - 1. Personally, I think it should be for those ages 3 - 96! For me, unequivocally the 'Baa----st' book for children that I have read and reviewed this year. Well done to my Vermont neighbors! Most highly recommended.

Just looking a the cover of "The Sheepover" makes me happy! The illustrations are beautiful, a combination of photo and artwork, very different from most children's books. I love the size of the book too - great for holding and reading aloud to one or more children.(approx. 11.25" by 10.5") The story is very imaginative - about "Sweet Pea, the orphan lamb" and her owner, Farmer John. Sweet Pea is sick and Vet Alison comes to examine her and give her medicine. As Sweet Pea recovers, the story quickly gets positive with a party for all the animals in the barn. There are favorite treats to eat, dress up time, dancing, a disco ball, a story read by Farmer John and a sleepover in the barn. I find the story very uplifting and love the names of all the animals - like Buff Orpington the rooster and Keeper the goose. We gave this to our 18 month old grandson and it was also great for our daughter-in-law who volunteers at an animal sanctuary and loves stories about animals who are valued even if they aren't perfect. I bought a copy of "The Sheepover" for myself too! Hoping to see more from these authors soon, enjoying the SweetPea Facebook page too.

Bought this book for a young girl. Have purchased several books by Jennifer & John Churchman and have liked them all.

I saw the Churchmans and Sweet Pea's story as a human interest piece on the evening news and knew right away, I wanted it for my great grandchild. I loved it! It is not only an inspirational story of the love between animals, the love the farmers had for their animals, the dedication of a wonderful country vet, but the book is visually lovely. I highly recommend it. Actually my great grandchild is too young for it just now, but will love seeing the animals and will grow into the story. Buy it. You won't be sorry. I'll also look forward to the further barnyard adventures from the Churchmans. When the first "Olivia" book came out, I felt the same way - such a different character - such a different concept. Sweet Pea, too, will be a favorite.

My wife and I have been avidly following the adventures of Farmer John, Jennifer, Ollie, Sweat Pea, Mighty Finn, Sadie, Violet, Prem, Laddie, Quinn, Cyrano, Mazie and the rest of the farm for several years know. We just received our early-supporters box with books, lambs made from Sweat Pea's wool and other goodies. John even gave us a copy to take to the elementary school library where my wife was Principal. (see photo- MMKA Librarians receive their own copy) The book is a treasure. John's photography and post-photography work is nothing short of brilliant. The book production is first rate and the neat thing is that the story and the characters are all real. In fact, John often invites supporters to his Vermont farm to meet the various animals we've all grown vicariously to love. The grand-daughter is getting a copy and her own lamb for Christmas. Cannot recommend this book too highly.

When the "Knitting Club" gets together for a Sheepover anything can happen!

This book is so,so Cute it just invites one to sit down and read it. It is the first book by Jennifer and John that I purchased! I like that it about the real lives of Real Animals.. I liked it so much I sent a copy to William and Kate for their children, i also sent a copy to Ivanta Trump for her children. I think everyone should have a copy of this book. I keep it in my formal Garden Room of my home here.

This kind and gentle book is just wonderful! I would recommend it to everyone old and young...I bought this book for myself and I smile just looking at the cover. Sweet Pea's friends Laddie and Owl and Wild Red Fox and Sadie and Prem and Sunny and Violet and Buff Orpington and Keeper and Cyrie and Quinn and Midsummer and Tom are the luckiest creatures in the world to have Vet Allison and Farmer John and Jennifer love and care for them. The part about Farmer John reading aloud the story about the orphan lamb was just so lovely. I wish there were more than 5 stars to award for this gem!

This doesn't ship from Amazon, so order well-ahead of gift-giving event.

Took a while to arrive, but it is a good product. The pictures are bright, and the story is cute. Got it for a toddler to "read" by himself.

The Sheepover
