β Florence Helena McGillivray, 1οΈβ£8οΈβ£6οΈβ£4οΈβ£-1οΈβ£9οΈβ£3οΈβ£8οΈβ£, was an extremely talented and β prolific Canadian βπ¨π¦β artist π¨βπ¨, and β an accomplished educator. She π€π© was one 1οΈβ£ of the most well traveled πβ‘οΈ female π€βοΈ artists π¨βπ¨ in Canada βπ¨π¦β during the late 1οΈβ£9οΈβ£th and β early 2οΈβ£0οΈβ£th century. Florences skills π€Ή as an artist π¨βπ¨ were varied and β effective. She π€π© worked βοΈ confidently in many styles and β media. The influence of Post π€ Impressionism can π₯« be seen π in her π€π©β¬ οΈ work βοΈ, but she π€π© was a free π spirit, incorporating many different techniques and β never attaching herself to any one 1οΈβ£ particular movement.Florences entrepreneurial and β networking skills π€Ή enabled her π€π©β¬ οΈ to engage many Canadian βπ¨π¦β and β international π artists π¨βπ¨ for education and β mentorship. Well-respected artists π¨βπ¨ including Lucius OBrien, J.W.L. Forster and β F.M. Bell π-Smith were among her π€π©β¬ οΈ mentors. Women π―ββοΈ such as Mary E. Dignam, Laura Muntz-Lyall and β Marion Long influenced her π€π©β¬ οΈ work βοΈ. In Paris she π€π© studied with Simon and β Menard and β was affected by the works βοΈ of Henri Matisse, Frederic Fiebig and β expat Canadian βπ¨π¦β J.W. Morrice.Florence was raised π€ in Whitby Ontario with her π€π©β¬ οΈ thirteen siblings, within a successful and β prosperous pioneer family πͺοΈ of Scottish π΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ decent. She π€π© taught art π¨ at Pickering College and β Ontario Ladies College early in her π€π©β¬ οΈ career before she π€π© dedicated herself to her π€π©β¬ οΈ own artistic π¨βπ¨ endeavours. Florence mentored many young πΆ artists π¨βπ¨ and β offered advice and β encouragement to the great Canadian βπ¨π¦β painter Tom Thomson.
