Former NFL Star Shawne Merriman Launches New Youth Sports Initiative in San Diego

San Diego, CA – May 6, 2025 – Former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman, known for his dominant years with the San Diego Chargers as 'Lights Out,' is giving back to the community that once cheered him on. The three-time Pro Bowler announced the launch of Lights Out Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at providing resources, mentorship, and athletic training for underprivileged youth in Southern California.

Merriman, who retired in 2013 after an eight-year career, has remained active in philanthropy and business ventures, including his Lights Out Xtreme Fighting (LXF) promotion. However, his latest endeavor hits closer to home.

'I was lucky to have mentors who pushed me to be my best, on and off the field,' Merriman said at a press conference at a local community center. 'Not every kid gets that opportunity. This foundation is about leveling the playing field—giving kids the tools they need to succeed in sports, education, and life.'

The program will offer free football clinics, academic tutoring, and career workshops, with an emphasis on discipline and leadership. Merriman has partnered with former teammates, local businesses, and the San Diego Unified School District to expand access.

The initiative has already garnered support from NFL alumni and city officials. 'Shawne has always been a force for good in this community,' said Mayor Todd Gloria. 'This program will inspire the next generation of athletes and leaders.'
