В России проституция находится под запретом, однако это не мешает представительницам древнейшей профессии зарабатывать деньги своим ремеслом. Корреспонденты Лайфа изучили тайные каналы дистрибуции элитных путан, продающих "любовь" арабским шейхам, высокопоставленным чиновникам и миллиардерам из списка Forbes.
Лайф сравнил цены "телеграмовских" путан и проституток в разных странах.
Цена на интим-услуги на Украине начинаюся с совсем смешной суммы в 300 гривен (около 770 рублей), а любители необычных утех могут раскошелиться на 3 тыс. гривен за час (около 7,7 тыс. рублей). При этом девушки выезжают на дом, так и принимают у себя с чаем и пирожками.
Таиланд является раем для сексуально раскрепащенных людей. О цене здесь договариваются по-разному: кто в начале, чтобы убедить пойти с вами, другие предпочитают говорить о деньгах уже после секса. В среднем заплатить придется 300 бат (около 600 рублей), за ночь девушка попросит 500 бат (около 1 тыс. рублей). В некоторых районах интим-услуги обходятся в среднем 1000-3000 бат (1900 — 5800 тыс. рублей).
С 2002 года проституция в Германии совершенно легальна, причем ежегодный ее оборот составляет около €15 млн. И это неудивительно: цена за секс в гостинице составляет около €50 (около 3,9 тыс. рублей), в машине обойдется дешевле — €30 (около 2,3 тыс. рублей). Причем за полчаса в квартире клиента придется заплатить €100 (около 7,7 тыс. рублей).

В Италии проституток обязали носить светоотражающую форму, что значительно упрощает поиск легкодоступных девушек. Кроме того, цена ночных бабочек начинается от €200 (около 15,5 тыс. рублей) за час и заканчивается €4,5 тыс. (около 348,6 тыс. рублей) за три дня.

It wasn't just direct approaches from pimps/prostitutes but also the sight of seeing sex tourism operating. My husband was asked for sex constantly and this began as early as 6 p.m. (admittedly this mostly happened when I wasn't with him - but not every single guy is going to be happy being approached for sex when he's wandering about looking for a place to eat dinner). Frankly (and living in a city myself and being aware of what goes on in parts of cities) I might have expected this kind of acvtivity from 11 p.m. onwards not from 6 p.m. The 'approaches' also ranged from lacklustre calling out to direct hassling and being followed to being physically grabbed by a pimp. The physical nature of some of the approaches was threatening and disturbing. My husband is only 28 and we have travelled a lot but we have never encountered this before unless we (1) knew we were entering a red light district e.g. Amsterdam or (2) wandered around central areas late at night - after midnight e.g. New York. We have never expereinced being physically grabbed before either. We appreciate that Peoples Square and environs are central and there are malls, transport hubs, restaurants etc. there but we will never go back as the sex scene is far too blatant and aggressive. We moved on to a hotel in the French Concession and my husband was not hassled for sex again and we had a far more pleasant time. Of course, I am sure there is prostitution in the French Concession as well but it was more discrete and less 'in your face'. Possibly the worst sights though were seeing the 60+ year old Western men with much much younger non-Western women (very clearly not wives or daughters) entering our first hotel prior to our move to the French Concession. One guy with his 2 girls in the lift really made me feel ill. This was a 5 star luxury hotel in the centre of town - not some seedy flea pit of motel in the red light district of Amsterdam. With Shanghai I think the whole of the area around Peoples Square/Nanjing Road East is a red light district and I would exercise extreme caution over where you stay and what you do in Shanghai if you want to avoid being approached or witness sex tourism operating. Consider other central areas e.g. French Concession for a trip with less sex for sale.

Just be aware that most people stay near the Bund or Peoples Square to "walk around." If you take a taxi to and from your hotel at every opportunity, then the wretched ambiance of East Nanjing will not affect you. Wander during the day to the Shanghai Museum, Urban Planning Museum and similar and return to your hotel. You will probably only be approached a couple times by people wanting to speak English (maybe innocently and maybe trying to fleece you).
However, if you are a wanderer like many of us, and like to leave your hotel and walk around and explore, then you must be aware of the scams, touts and pimps.

SBS - thanks for your original reply. We went on to have a great time in Shanghai once we moved to the French Concession and took taxis everywhere. We even went back to Peoples Square to visit the museum (taxi there, taxi away)! I found Shanghai to be a fascinating contrast to Beijing and a very vibrant manic, crazy, frustrating, exciting city - intriguing enough for a second visit some time. It was just the overt sex selling which caught us off guard (especially it being outside our 5* hotel!).
I hope everyone else heeds your advice about the area (and I wish I had come across those TA posts giving warnings!) for hotels...if I was with kids I'd certainly want to be staying elsewhere. Next time we're in Shanghai (...) I'll be looking at your area suggestions but we found the French Concession a welcome respite from Peoples Sqaure/Nanjing Rd East.

In Beijing I live close to Sanlitun so when walking home I am solicited daily. You get immunized to it after a while and just don't pay attention.

What can I say, now those thing are treated as "basic human rights" and police and city management normally do not intervene, thanks for the democratic movement now the city of shanghai is become more and more like international blvd at East Oakland.

My suggestion is NEVER response to anyone trying to approach you, epically NICE & YOUNG country people. Once I be the mayor, I will clean those guys in one week, then the city would be like 1980s, classic and peaceful.
