During Shameless’ eleven seasons, the show introduced a wide variety of characters that devoted fans came to care deeply about . Despite that, when the show began, it certainly seemed unlikely that people would tune into Shameless to see a love story play out.
No matter how things seemed when Shameless debuted, the series focused on a long list of couples that viewers found themselves rooting for. For example, Shameless viewers really enjoyed seeing couples like Kev and V, Fiona and Jimmy, Ian and Trevor, Lip and Mandy, Frank and Monica, as well as Lip and Sierra. It also was extremely sad when a lot of those characters left Shameless . No matter how lovely or entertaining all of those couples were together, there is absolutely no doubt that Shameless’ most popular couple was Ian and Mickey. For that reason, it is pretty shocking that in a lot of ways it seems like Mickey was totally wrong for Ian.
When Mickey Milkovich was introduced during the first season of Shameless, the idea that the character would become one of the most beloved in the series’ history seemed unfathomable. Amazingly enough, however, that definitely became the case over time which makes all the sense in the world. After all, when people tune into most Shameless episodes that featured Mickey, it was nearly impossible to think that he and Ian weren’t meant to be together.
In 2015, a writer for Pajiba.com wrote an article in which they concluded that Shameless’ Ian and Mickey were the best couple on television . On a purely instinctual level, that is an idea that would be extremely hard to argue against. After all, there were so many reasons to love Ian and Mickey together.
One of the main reasons why Ian and Mickey were so popular is that actors Noel Fisher And Cameron Monaghan have so much chemistry that it is easy to assume they are close in real life . On top of that, Mickey and Ian proved their devotion to one another over and over again during their many appearances together. For example, when Ian was struggling to accept his mental health issues, Mickey was willing to be there for Ian in whatever way he could during his mental health struggles said it all. On top of that, Ian didn’t jump the border with Mickey but he almost did and he was willing to put himself in huge legal strife to spend time with his love as he prepared the flee the country.
Even though Ian and Mickey clearly craved to be together early in their relationship, things kept tearing them apart. For that reason, Shameless fans had to seemingly see Mickey and Ian share a final goodbye several times. After having their hearts broken by Mickey and Ian’s many separations, Shameless fans far and wide rejoiced when the couple finally got married.
Given all of the reasons why people adore Ian and Mickey as a couple, most fans of the series may find it hard to even consider the idea that they aren’t perfect together. That said, there have been a lot of popular TV couples that would have been wrong for each other in real life and Mickey and Ian are one of them.
As for why Mickey was wrong for Ian, it all comes down to one thing, he adores him too much. As a result of the fact that Mickey is so madly in love with Ian, he allows him to walk all over him which isn’t surprising since if you give a Gallagher an inch they will take a mile.
Throughout most of their relationship, Mickey put up with a lot of crap from Ian that he didn’t deserve. For example, when Ian and Mickey became a couple, it was clear that Milkovich wasn’t ready to come out largely because of fearing his father’s reaction. Even though Ian knew the danger he would be putting Mickey in, Gallagher still gave Milkovich an ultimatum. Unsurprisingly, when Mickey came out due to Ian’s ultimatum, his father attacked him in a matter of seconds.
Even after the disastrous coming out, Ian continued to force Mickey to do things he was very uncomfortable with to be with him. For example, during the final season of Shameless, Ian wanted to live in an area that Mickey was very uncomfortable in. Of course, Ian got his way and Mickey felt miserable as a result for a while. Since a Reddit thread pointed out the many ways Milkovich and Gallagher's relationship was one-sided , there is every reason to believe that Mickey would continue to give in to the vast majority of Ian’s demands. How long would it take for that to cause a lot of resentment? Since Mickey has proven that he can’t get Ian to consider his desires more, he is the wrong person for Gallagher.

Ian Gallagher (born 1989) is the third oldest Gallagher sibling. He is the son of Monica Gallagher and Gary Bennett , but was brought up under Frank Gallagher 's fatherhood like the rest of his siblings. His half-brothers are Lip , Carl , Liam and Sean Bennett , and his half-sisters are Fiona , Debbie and Stella . In Series 1 he worked at the Karib's Shop and later at The Jockey as a barman but in more recent series his employment, if he has any, has not been shown. Ian left the Chatsworth Estate very suddenly, at the end of Series 7 he stowed away in Joe Pritchard 's car when he was driving to his new life with a harassed looking Karen Maguire . Karen was having second thoughts, and realizing she still had feeling for her husband Jamie she tried to talk Joe into taking her back. Joe
