A fourth seĀries of ten episodes has been comĀmisĀsioned for broadĀcast in 2021. [4] [5]
Ex- DeĀtecĀtiveā InĀspecĀtor (DI) Frank HathĀaway, now a debt-laden priĀvateā inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtor , meets Luella ShakeĀspeare when she emĀploys him to inĀvesĀtiĀgate the fiancĆ© she metā onĀline . HathĀaway and his asĀsisĀtant SeĀbasĀtĀian BruĀdenell disĀcover that the fiancĆ© is a conā man . They reĀport back to Luella, but she is reĀasĀsured by her fiancĆ©, and the wedĀding ocĀcurs.
When her new husĀband is killed at the reĀcepĀtion, Luella is susĀpected of murĀder by local DeĀtecĀtive InĀspecĀtor Christina MarĀlowe, who had been Frank's juĀnior. Luella is thrown toĀgether with Frank and SeĀbasĀtĀian to crack the mysĀtery of what has hapĀpened, and after her name is cleared, she uses her reĀcovĀered savĀings to buy into Frank's busiĀness. Frank's only emĀployee is SeĀbasĀtĀian BruĀdenell, a young asĀpirĀing RADA -trained actor who uses his skills when unĀderĀcover inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtions are reĀquired. He lives above a theĀatre cosĀtuĀmier run by GloĀria Fonteyn.
Three days beĀfore her wedĀding, Luella ShakeĀspeare hires priĀvate deĀtecĀtive Frank HathĀaway to inĀvesĀtiĀgate her fiancĆ©, Clive BrenĀton, whom she beĀlieves is havĀing an afĀfair with his secĀreĀtary, JanĀice BarĀdolph. She calls him off the case when she reĀalises that she was misĀtaken. Frank had not found evĀiĀdence of an afĀfair, but found out that Clive is using difĀferĀent idenĀtiĀties on datĀingā webĀsites . Frank inĀterĀrupts the wedĀding, but Luella has the seĀcuĀrity guards send him away. Shortly after the wedĀding at a hotel, Clive is stabbed to death with Luella's hairĀdresser's scisĀsors. Luella is arĀrested by the poĀlice, who reĀlease her soon after. She disĀcovĀers that her savĀings have been stolen from her bank acĀcount. HathĀaway and ShakeĀspeare find out that Clive was a bigamist with an acĀcomĀplice, JanĀice ā who stole Luella's Ā£ 250,000 that Luella had inĀvested in Clive's comĀpany. Luella stops the acĀcomĀplice from leavĀing with the money and reĀtrieves it from her. Frank thinks that JanĀice is the killer, but the poĀlice tell her that JanĀice could not have killed Clive, alĀthough they arĀrest her for her inĀvolveĀment in Clive's bogus busiĀness. The inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtion reĀturns to the hotel and one of Clive's preĀviĀous wives, VeronĀica VinĀten ā who adĀmits that she killed Clive after findĀing out that he had faked his death and was marĀryĀing Luella. The poĀlice arĀrest VeronĀica. Frank is in debt, and reĀlucĀtantly acĀcepts Luella as his partĀner in his deĀtecĀtive agency.
Frank and Luella are emĀployed by PeneĀlope PinĀcott to inĀvesĀtiĀgate sabĀoĀtage at the busiĀness she and her husĀband Owain run, Shady Nooks care home. SeĀbastien goes unĀderĀcover as a care asĀsisĀtant. DurĀing lunch, when all the staff and resĀiĀdents are in the dinĀing room, PeneĀlope falls to her death from the roof. SusĀpectĀing one of the staff or resĀiĀdents of the murĀder, Frank and Luella have to work out how it was done. SeĀbasĀtĀian disĀcovĀers that the saboĀteur is a resĀiĀdent, Johnny FalĀstaff. He does not like livĀing there and was deĀlibĀerĀately causĀing varĀiĀous probĀlems in an atĀtempt to have his son 'resĀcue' him from the home. Care worker Soozie is also a murĀder susĀpect when the inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtion reĀveals that she is atĀtracted to Owain. Frank works out how PeneĀlope's (alĀready dead) body crashed to the ground from the roof when all the home's resĀiĀdents and staff were preĀsent in the dinĀing room. The death of a resĀiĀdent exĀactly a year ago proĀvides a clue ā the late resĀiĀdent's son Ian blames PeneĀlope for her death. At the end it is reĀvealed that he beĀcame the home's cook six months later and killed PeneĀlope in reĀvenge on the anĀniverĀsary of his mother's death.
Frank and Luella are emĀployed by Sir Tim Forbes-Allen to find the missĀing cuĀraĀtor, LuĀcian Shaw, of his new ShakeĀspeare muĀseum fearĀing he had been kidĀnapped. The muĀseum had been beset by feĀmale proĀtesĀtors, The HerĀstoĀriĀans, angry at Forbes-Allen polĀicy toĀwards women in hisĀtory. Frank and Luella find Shaw tied up in the baseĀment when they reĀceive news that Forbes-Allen has been murĀdered. Shaw emĀploys them to find a love letĀter from the vicĀtim and a note from the letĀter holder and a cheque, in payĀment for findĀing Shaw, from Lady Forbes-Allen proĀvides a link to the murĀderer.

In a reĀview of the first episode Theā Dailyā TeleĀgraph called it "a nice, cosy drama" but found "plenty to disĀlike" about it, critĀiĀcisĀing in parĀticĀuĀlar what it saw as an abunĀdance of cliches, the charĀacĀter of SeĀbasĀtĀian and the "crassĀness" of using the last names of William ShakeĀspeare and his wife, Anne HathĀaway, as the names of the deĀtecĀtives, and as the title of the seĀries. The reĀview stated, howĀever, that dayĀtime teleĀviĀsion, where the seĀries airs in the UK, "is not reĀally the place for comĀplexĀity or grit". It also found that "the first episode of ShakeĀspeare & Hathaway did at least set up two leadĀing charĀacĀters youād want to see more of", and praised BenĀton and Joyner for their performances. [10]
The SunĀday Express found the proĀgramme "difĀfiĀcult to fault[...] well acted, nicely writĀten ā with deĀcent jokes ā and beauĀtiĀfully shot around StratĀford". It comĀpared the show favourably with other, gritĀtier fare on offer in teleĀviĀsion drama schedules. [11]
ReĀviewĀing the first episode of the secĀond seĀries in 2019, i newsĀpaĀper praised the "easy chemĀistry" of Joyner and BenĀton, as well as "a strong supĀportĀing cast [that] inĀcludes nice turns from Roberta TayĀlor and Patrick WalĀshe McBride in parĀticĀuĀlar". OverĀall, it says, "this is drama with the ham in the oven and turned up to ten. And yet someĀhow, it acĀtuĀally works". PayĀing speĀcial atĀtenĀtion to the writĀing of creĀators Jude TinĀdall and Paul Matthew ThompĀson, it goes on to say that "the real apĀpeal of this show lies in a genĀtle if arch charm, deĀcent plots and a sense that if we're going to spend time in terĀriĀtory adĀjaĀcent to MidĀsomerā MurĀders , then you might as well have fun with it". [12]
A ReĀgion B-locked Blu-ray of SeĀries 1 was reĀleased in March 2019 and SeĀries 2 was reĀleased on both DVD and Blu-ray in the UK in April 2019. [13]
