Shailene Woodley 'Never Felt Uncomfortable Doing Intimate Scenes': I'm 'Vocal' About 'Boundaries'

Shailene Woodley is revealing why she doesn't have a problem with portraying intimacy onscreen.
The 29-year-old actress opened up to The Hollywood Reporter in a new cover story about the several sex scenes she had to do for Drake Doremus' 2020 romantic drama Endings, Beginnings, saying, "I've never felt uncomfortable doing intimate scenes because I'm very vocal."
"I always sit down and talk with the director, the other actor," she told the outlet. "We always have conversations of, 'How are you planning on shooting it? Is nudity necessary? Is it going to distract from the scene, add to the scene?' We know exactly what the boundaries are. And I've never been in a situation where those things haven't been honored."
Woodley starred in Endings, Beginnings portraying Daphne , a woman coping with a recent heartbreak with an unexpected love triangle, which includes multiple intimate moments. When dealing with those scenes, the actress said that she prefers to make the films realistic.
"Oftentimes in movies, you see two people having sex and the woman has her bra on, and in real life, I don't think I ever did that, sex with a bra — or very, very rarely," she said.
Doremus commended Woodley's ability to be direct, telling THR that it's a rare quality among contemporary actors.
"She's not modern, she's a throwback, like a French actress in the '60s or something," he said. "She owns her sexuality in a way that's just so liberating and magical. She's able to use her gut and her intuition a lot. She's chill and easy and present and kind and thoughtful and humble. And just so not — I hate to say the word, but — actory."

Woodley is now preparing for the debut of her latest romantic role in The Last Letter from Your Lover, starring alongside Felicity Jones , Callum Turner, Joe Alwyn and Nabhaan Rizwan.
Based on the novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes, the film follows Ellie (Jones, 37), a present-day journalist who discovers a collection of letters from the 1960s that detail an "illicit love affair" between two people — Jennifer (Woodley) and Anthony (Turner, 31) — while Jennifer is married to husband Laurence (Alwyn, 30).
Woodley told Entertainment Weekly in January that she was "inclined to say yes" to starring in the film "before [she] even read the script," as she was excited to work with Euphoria director Augustine Frizzell.
"Then I read the script and it was really beautifully executed — I don't feel like there's a lot of movies that are told this way and are also executed in a way that's thoroughly entertaining and intelligent," she shared.
The Last Letter from Your Lover premieres Friday on Netflix.

The "Big Little Lies" actor Shailene Woodley told The Hollywood Reporter that she disliked sex scenes in which women are seen in bras because she preferred "realism over modesty."
"Oftentimes in movies, you see two people having sex and the woman has her bra on, and in real life, I don't think I ever did that, sex with a bra — or very, very rarely," the 29-year-old said.
Woodley, who most recently starred alongside Jodie Foster in "The Mauritanian," added that she had "never felt uncomfortable doing intimate scenes" because she is vocal with both the director and her costars on set.
She said: "I always sit down and talk with the director, the other actor. We always have conversations of, 'How are you planning on shooting it? Is nudity necessary? Is it going to distract from the scene, add to the scene?'
"We know exactly what the boundaries are. And I've never been in a situation where those things haven't been honored."
Later in the profile, Woodley discussed her relationship with her fiancé, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. She also explained why she and Rodgers announced their engagement.
"When we announced that we were engaged, we wanted to do that only because we didn't want someone else to do it before we did," Woodley said.
She added: "We didn't do it for months and months after we had become engaged, but the reaction to it was really a lot, and so we were like, 'Let's just politely decline [to talk about the relationship] for a little while and live in our little bubble.'"
Earlier this year, several tabloids reported that the pair had begun a long-distance relationship. In February, a source told E! News the pair were keeping things "private and low key."
But days after reports of their romance made headlines, Rodgers announced he was engaged at the NFL Honors, where he picked up the league's MVP award for the third time . Rodgers did not name his fiancée, but Woodley confirmed their engagement weeks later during an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
Last month, Woodley spoke with Shape magazine about her relationship with Rodgers, telling the publication that she and Rodgers had "jumped in headfirst and got some of the sticky bits out of the way early."
"I have the perspective that I would have met Aaron in any context, any space in time, because I feel we were meant to be together," she said.
It's no secret that Shailene Woodley was comfortable stripping down for her latest flick White Bird in a Blizzard, but her racy sex scene with Thomas Jane is already raising some eyebrows.
In the film, the 22-year-old star plays Kat Conner, a teenager who is just 17 years old when her mother disappears, leading her life to spiral into chaos just as she discovers her sexuality.
E! News caught up with the Divergent beauty at the Los Angeles premiere of the film, where she dished on her nude scene in the Greg Araki -directed flick, explaining why the "sexuality component" was crucial to the drama.
"When you're a teenager you're exploring all different parts of yourself for the first time. Whether it be cheating on a test to having a first boyfriend to making love for the first time to getting in your first fights," she said. "And a lot of films that deal with young people capture many of those regions, but they sort of leave the sexuality component out of it. And I think it's an important part of all of our process, no matter if you're a teenager or if you're in your twenties, or however old you are. I admire and I love that Greg is not afraid to incorporate those parts of being a teenager in this film."
Asked about the headline-making sex scene during which she sleeps with a much older man, Woodley was quick to point out that making mistakes is all part of growing up.
"That's the thing about being a young person. You make mistakes, you're like 'Stop! Don't do that! Don't do that!' but you're meant to fall on your face, you're meant to have experiences you wouldn't necessarily have when you're older," she explained.
Still, she says of the scandalous moment, "That scene in particular, you kind feel wrong watching it, but you kind of can't stop watching it, it's kind of sexy but it's kind of disturbing you know? I love it."
As for whether the Descendants beauty is willing to strip down for a future film?
"The thing with nudity is, it's not something that as an actor you're like, 'I'm going to be nude it in.' You know? If nudity lends itself to a particular artistic creation then I think it's up to the discretion of the particular screenplay and the story," she said.
Despite her immense success, Woodley says she stays grounded in Tinseltown by ''being human.''
"We all wake up with bad breath in the morning," she added with a laugh. "I feel very grateful and I feel very fortunate to be where I'm at right now."
