Wikipedia ( pronunciation ( help · info ) ) is a free online encyclopedia website in 327 languages of the world, 316 languages which are currently active and 11 are closed. People can freely use it, share it, and change it, without having to pay. It is also one of the biggest wiki organizations . People can choose to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation to fund Wikipedia and its sister projects. It is an open content website. This means anyone can copy it, and make changes to it if they follow the rules for copying or editing.

Wikipedia was started on January 10, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger as part of an earlier online encyclopedia named Nupedia . On January 15, 2001, Wikipedia became a separate website of its own. It is a wiki that uses the software MediaWiki (like all other Wikimedia Foundation projects).

Wikipedia began as a related project for Nupedia . Nupedia was a free English-language online encyclopedia project. Nupedia's articles were written and owned by Bomis, Inc which was a web portal company. The important people of the company were Jimmy Wales , the person in charge of Bomis, and Larry Sanger , the editor-in-chief of Nupedia. Nupedia was first licensed under the Nupedia Open Content License which was changed to the GNU Free Documentation License before Wikipedia was founded and made their first article when Richard Stallman requested them. It was launched as an English-language edition at www.wikipedia.com, [11] and announced by Sanger on the Nupedia mailing list. [7] Wikipedia's policy of "neutral point-of-view" [12] was enforced in its initial months, and was similar to Nupedia's earlier "nonbiased" policy. Wikipedia gained early contributors from Nupedia, Slashdot , and from people who looked it up . It grew to about 20,000 articles, and 18 languages by the end of 2001. By late 2002 it had 26 languages, 46 by the end of 2003, and 161 by the end of 2004. [13] Nupedia and Wikipedia both existed until Nupedia's servers were stopped in 2003. After this, its text was incorporated into Wikipedia. I found out that my brother watches pornography containing young children on the internet. He is in his forties, college educated and married. He says it’s not a problem, he doesn’t want to have sex with kids and that no one is getting hurt. Should I be concerned?*
Yes, you should be concerned. Your question is a very important one, and one that more and more people are wondering about. While some people may feel that they are not “abusing” a child by "just watching" pornography with children, there is a child being sexually abused in any situation where they are the object of an adult’s sexual behaviors.
Child Pornography is the Image of a Crime Being Committed As the sexual abuse of a child is illegal, any image depicting this is an image of a crime being committed. Watching child pornography is a crime. Everytime your brother watches child pornography, he is committing a crime. In essence, two crimes are being committed at the same time - a child being sexually abused and watching a child being sexually abused. Additionally, when child pornography is watched, it creates a demand for images of children being sexually abused and hence, more children are at risk for being sexually abused by the people who make these images.
I would also add that child sexual abuse can also occur without touching a child. Non-touching child sex abuse does include watching child pornography. A woman who was sexually abused as a child and the abuse was filmed, stated that she feels violated time and time again whenever she thinks about these films being passed around. So, to be clear, viewing child pornography is absolutely child sexual abuse. For further information, please read defining child sexual abuse and defining child pornography.
Getting Help While not all who view child pornography pose a risk to offend a child in person, some people may find that they have less and less control over how often they seek these images, the thoughts they have during and after viewing child pornography and their overall behavior regarding sex abuse of children.
