A young mother stabbed to death by a neighbour while her children slept upstairs 'knew' he wanted to kill her, one of the victim's co-workers told a court.
Former soldier Collin Reeves, 35, is on trial at Bristol Crown Court for the murder of Jennifer Chapple, 33, and her husband, 36-year-old teacher Stephen Chapple.
Reeves forced his way into the couple's home in Dragon Rise, Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton in Somerset, on the evening of November 21 last year.
He stabbed both six times in a frenzied minute-long attack using the ceremonial dagger he had been given when he left the army in 2017, before calling the police and telling them what he had done, the court was told.
When officers arrived at the scene, the couple's children were still asleep upstairs.
Collin Reeves is on trial at Bristol Crown Court accused of the murder of his neighbours Stephen and Jennifer Chapple in Dragon Rise, Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton in Somerset, on the evening of November 21, 2021
Former soldier Collin Reeves, 34, is accused of using a ceremonial dagger he received upon leaving the army to murder his neighbours
Bristol Crown Court heard Jennifer Chapple, 33, suffered six stab wounds to her upper chest and shoulder causing fatal injuries to a major blood vessel and her heart. Stephen Chapple, left, also suffered six stab wounds and was found near the back door of his home

Reeves had been involved in a long-running dispute with the couple over designated parking on the new-build housing development.
The defendant has admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, claiming he was suffering from an abnormality of mental functioning, but denies murder.
Just 10 days before the killings, Reeves had verbally abused Mrs Chapple outside her house following an earlier exchange between the victim and Reeves' wife Kayleigh Reeves.
During the incident, which was caught on the Chapples' door bell cam, Reeves referred to Mrs Chapple as a 'f****** c***' and 'you fat bitch'.
Sandrine Moreira, who worked with Mrs Chapple in the coffee shop of a nearby garden centre, said on Wednesday the victim had been 'very scared' of Reeves.
The witness said: '(Mrs Chapple) was very scared, she was very afraid.
He stabbed both six times in a frenzied minute-long attack using the ceremonial dagger (similar to the one pictured) he had been given when he left the army in 2017
Mrs Chapple, pictured, and her husband did not have any defensive wounds, which according to the prosecution was due to the speed of the attack
'She knew (Reeves) would kill her if she would say or do anything against him, she knew he was ex-military.'
Ms Moreira described an incident in which Reeves had brought his two daughters into the coffee shop and adjusted his chair so he could stare at the counter where Mrs Chapple was working.
'The chair was turned sideways to face us at the counter and he just sat there looking at us, that was pretty much it,' Ms Moreira said.
Various friends and neighbours gave witness statements about how scared Mrs Chapple was of the defendant, including becoming anxious about the school run because she did not want to be alone.
Mrs Chapple also told several people she wanted to move house to get away from Reeves.
The jury was told that Reeves, who was a commando engineer with the British Army, has admitted killing the couple and has pleaded guilty to their manslaughter
The jury was shown a clip from the Chapples' back door camera of Reeves climbing their fence and entering via the back door.
A few seconds later Mrs Chapple can be heard screaming in terror, with Reeves shouting 'die you f****** die'.
Reeves had also been suffering problems in his marriage, the jury was told.
As well as the dispute over parking, on the evening of the killings, Mrs Reeves had told her husband that she wanted to try a trial separation.
Just a few minutes later Reeves walked out of his house armed with his ceremonial dagger, usually kept in a picture frame, and stabbed the Chapples, the court was told.
When he was first taken into custody, Reeves said at one point: 'I shouldn't have done it, I ruined their lives and mine.'
He claims he was suffering an 'abnormality of mental functioning', and jurors were told it will be their job to decide whether this was true
Reeves denies murdering the couple but admits their manslaughter. The trial at Bristol Crown Court continues
A psychiatrist instructed by Reeves' defence team concluded that he was not suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from his time in the army between 2002 and 2017.
Dr Lucy Bacon found the defendant had symptoms of moderate depression, but nothing to suggest it was undermining his ability to form a rational judgment or exercise self-control, and the defence of diminished responsibility did not apply.
A psychiatrist for the prosecution, Dr John Sandford, found Reeves had mild depression, but that he was able to operate fairly normally from day to day, and did not have an abnormality of mental function.
Reeves sat with his head bowed or in his hands throughout most of the prosecution's opening speech.
The trial, which is expected to last for eight days, continues.

People aged under 40 are being urged to have their hearts checked because they may potentially be at risk of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.
The syndrome, known as SADS, has been fatal for all kinds of people regardless of whether they maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.
SADS is an 'umbrella term to describe unexpected deaths in young people', said The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, most commonly occurring in people under 40 years of age.
People aged under 40 are being urged to have their hearts checked, because they may potentially be at risk of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) (pictured, woman experiencing chest pain while running)
The term is used when a post-mortem cannot find an obvious cause of death.
The US-based SADS Foundation has said that over half of the 4,000 annual SADS deaths of children, teens or young adults have one of the top two warning signs present.
Those signs include a family history of a SADS diagnosis or sudden unexplained death of a family member, and fainting or seizure during exercise, or when excited or startled, reported news.com.au .
Last year a 31-year-old woman, Catherine Keane, died in her sleep while living with two friends in Dublin.
Catherine Keane (pictured right with her mother Margherita), 31, was found to have died in her sleep while living with two friends in Dublin last year
Her mother Margherita Cummins told the Irish Mirror , 'They were all working from home so no one really paid attention when Catherine didn't come down for breakfast.'
'They sent her a text at 11.20am and when she didn't reply, they checked her room and found she had passed.
'Her friend heard a noise in her room at 3.56am and believes now that is when she died.'
Ms Cummins stated that her daughter 'went to the gym and walked 10,000 steps every day'.
'I take some comfort in that she went in her sleep and knew no pain and I'm grateful for that. I always worried about the kids driving in the car but never saw this coming. I never thought I'd ever lose a child in my life,'
Spokesperson for Melbourne's Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute said: 'there are approximately 750 cases per year of people aged under 50 in Victoria suddenly having their heart stop (cardiac arrest)' (pictured, woman suffering from chest pain)
Melbourne's Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is developing the country's first SADS registry.
'There are approximately 750 cases per year of people aged under 50 in Victoria suddenly having their heart stop (cardiac arrest),' a spokesperson said.
'Of these, approximately 100 young people per year will have no cause found even after extensive investigations such as a full autopsy (SADS phenomenon).'
Cardiologist and researcher Dr Elizabeth Paratz said: 'Baker's registry was the first in the country and one of only a few in the world that combined ambulance, hospital and forensics information.'
'(It allows you to see) people have had the cardiac arrest and no cause was found on the back end,' Dr Paratz said.
She believes the potential lack of awareness may be due to the fact 'a lot of it takes place outside of traditional medical settings'.
Cardiologist and researcher Dr Elizabeth Paratz (pictured) said from a public health perspective, combating SADS was 'not as easy as everyone in Australia getting genetically screened' as scientists were still not 100 per cent clear on 'what genes cause this'
'The majority of these SADS events, 90 per cent, occur outside the hospital – the person doesn't make it – so it's actually ambulance staff and forensics caring for the bulk of these patients,' Dr Paratz said.
'I think even doctors underestimate it. We only see the 10 per cent who survive and make it to hospital. We only see the tip of the iceberg ourselves.'
For family and friends of victims, SADS is a 'very hard entity to grasp' because it's a 'diagnosis of nothing', Dr Paratz added.
Dr Paratz said that from a public health perspective, combating SADS was 'not as easy as everyone in Australia getting genetically screened' as scientists were still not 100 per cent clear on 'what genes cause this'.
'The best advice would be, if you yourself have had a first-degree relative – a parent, sibling, child – who's had an unexplained death, it's extremely recommended you see a cardiologist,' she said.

Elizabeth Hurley is heating things up this winter season.
The actress, 55, shared two photos of herself posing topless in the snow on Monday, writing on her Instagram, "How could I resist?"
In the pictures, Hurley wears nothing but a pair of white bikini bottoms from her eponymous swimwear line, Elizabeth Hurley Beach, and a fuzzy jacket by Dsquared2.
She tagged both brands in the post, as well as her stylist Mike Adler.
Many followers quickly flocked to the comments section to react to Hurley's sexy look.
"You are not human 🔥," Ru-Paul's Drag Race judge Michelle Visage commented.
"You are an outrage," actress Caroline Quentin wrote. "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH."
Hurley reflected on her modeling career in October during her appearance on PEOPLE (the TV show!) , sharing that her foray into the industry was unexpected and happened to her "out of the blue."
"I acted for years before I got my first modeling job," Hurley said, noting that her first gig was with The Estée Lauder Companies at age 29.
"I was an actress, not really a model," she said.
More than two decades later, Hurley's impact on the business continues as son Damian, 18, has established himself to be quite the model in recent years.

In August, Damian — whom Hurley shares with the late movie producer Steve Bing — signed with IMG Models, whose impressive roster includes the likes of Ashley Graham and Gisele Bündchen , as well as sisters Bella Hadid and Gigi Hadid .
The teen model, known for his signature long tresses , recently joked about changing up his look and posted a photo of himself rocking a shaved head.
"Update lol: i love u guys so much hahaha but I'm not bald 😭😭😭" he captioned the snapshot on his Instagram. "this is prosthetics for a new project lmao but thank u for the cute comments ♥️ tempted to do it for real now 👀."
