The ladyboy phenomenon is very well accepted in Thailand, and well-integrated into social and daily life. Probably your gardener, home designer or working colleague could be a ladyboy, and you wouldn’t change a bit of your attitude. That seems to be a personal choice, and they are often fun to be around. It was known that some fitness centres even had three changing rooms: male, female and ladyboy.
Ladyboys making a living from their features are very exuberant and flamboyant, speaking high and loud, permanently overacting, and well known for their burst of moods. They very often speak good English. Since their revenue depends on how pretty they are, they will financially invest a lot more in their features, breast augmentation being the most obvious one, and some will seriously increase to seriously big sizes. Then plastic and facial cosmetic surgery will be next on the list, and many of them tend to have very similar nose shapes. Even Adam’s apple, often giving them away, can be corrected. And of course, few will go through the ultimate surgical procedure and become a woman.
The best-known place is in the middle of Bangla Road in Patong . Just walk down the street, and you can’t miss them, the crowd around is pointing all cameras in this direction.
Cocktails and Dreams , in Soi Happy (aka Soi Vegas) in Bangla Road , almost opposite Seduction Discotheque, is a small bar with a tiny stage often performing simple shows, you have to have to order a drink. Some girls are very feminine, and they are more than happy to pose for a photo, but get ready for the ‘you take a photo – you buy me a drink’. They also can become ‘too friendly’, but it’s still fun.
Simon Cabaret is an excellent professional show, as you can see in some of the photos, but of course, there is a fee. Unfortunately, taking pictures is not allowed anymore during the show, but you’ll have plenty of opportunities outside after the show. Note that they will ask for a tip, usually 100 baht.

Paradise Complex , the gay area of Patong , has several small cabarets with humble but decent shows that won’t cost you more than a beer. ‘My Way’ used to be the best one.
Useful Tips (you are in luck with tips today) : In Soi Bangla and Simon Cabaret , ladyboys will encourage you to take their photo, with you or without you on it. Just know that it is not free. It usually costs a 100 baht, and if you chose to run, remember: they are still guys 😀

Photos of two Thai boys in flamboyant costumes made from materials found in rural Thailand went viral just before the actual Victoria’s Secret fashion show was held in Paris. And boy, did they work it.
The photos feature two young internet personalities in fancy lingerie and wings, obviously inspired by Victoria’s Secret angels.
Their costumes are made from objects that remind Thais of all things local: canvas, chicken coops, grass tufts, flowers and leaves. Some dresses represent authentic Thai culture, like a neon ferris wheel that is a symbol of a Thai temple fair, or a jumpsuit made from a colorful traditional sarong.
The amateur models, looking no older than 10 years old, strike their poses in a rice field, the most familiar Northeast setting. Both boys smize, and Tyra Banks would be so proud of them.
An older ladyboy, who goes by Suchanatda Kaewsa-nga on Facebook is the mastermind behind the costumes and she is the one who shared the photos.
Many say that these kids are following in the footsteps of Madeow, the 17-year-old trans designer who became famous for making fancy costumes from household objects. This year Madeow made it to TIME’s list of Next Generation Leaders.
Maybe this is the reason that RuPaul’s Drag Race hasn’t made it to Thai audiences? These baby ladyboys are slaying it before they would’ve even had a chance to grow up and audition.

Country’s first female tourism minister promises to crack the whip on vice industry
THAILAND'S sex industry is under fire after the country's first female tourism minister vowed to shut down the country's many brothels and go-go bars.
Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul wants future holidaymakers to flock to Thailand for its beauty and beaches and not its seedy red light districts and world-famous ladyboys.
But those working in the industry say any clampdown would devastate the local economy and leave thousands out of work.
Thailand is predominantly Buddhist country and with traditional values, but it is also home to one of the world's most infamous sex industries.
Every year, hordes of tourists flock to the bright lights of go-go bars and massage parlours in Bangkok and other tourist towns.
But Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul had tried to play down the role of the sex industry in drawing visitors.
"Tourists don't come to Thailand for such a thing," Kobkarn said.
"They come here for our beautiful culture.
"We want Thailand to be about quality tourism.
Prostitution is actually illegal in Thailand but the law is almost invariably ignored - mainly because of police corruption.
Those trying to promote the welfare of sex workers say Kobkarn's goal is unrealistic.
The military government is in denial about the proliferation of prostitution and its contribution to the economy and tourism, said Panomporn Utaisri of NightLight, a Christian non-profit group that helps women in the sex trade to find alternative work.
"There's no denying this industry generates a lot of incomSe," Panomporn told the Mail .
There are no government estimates of the value of Thailand's sex industry, or how much of the income from tourism comes from sex tourists.
There are about 123,530 sex workers in Thailand, according to a 2014 UNAIDS report.
The tourism sector accounts for about 10 percent of gross domestic product and sex worker groups said the minister's vision of a prostitution-free Thailand would dent that.
"The police presence already drives off a number of clients who come to relax or drink at bars," said Surang Janyam, director of Service Workers in Group (SWING), which provides sex workers with free medical care and vocational training.
"Wiping out this industry is guaranteed to make Thailand lose visitors and income."
Many sex workers come from the impoverished northeast and see selling their bodies as a way out of poverty.
Prostitutes can earn up to 5,000 baht ($143.14) a night, nearly 20 times the minimum wage of 300 baht ($8.59) per day.
I n an attempt to diversify the industry, Thailand is starting a “month for women travellers” campaign in August, in which female-only pink immigration lanes and parking zones will be set up in international airports.
The campaign is timed to coincide with the birthday of Thailand’s Queen Sirikit in August.
Other travel sectors including wedding and honeymoon tourism, and eco-tourism, are also being pursued.
