When you face sexist jibes about your driving skills and stunned looks from most men you drive past, it's not always easy being one of the female truckers living life in the slow lane
WHEN most of us picture a typical trucker, we think of a big, beefy man - not a friendly, smiling woman in her twenties with pink dream catchers hanging from the ceiling of the cab and the slogan "Queen of the Road" emblazoned on the front of her lorry.
But the haulage industry is changing - and a growing number of women like 26-year-old Gina McGoldrick are buckling themselves in and joining the big-rig business.
Currently, only one per cent of UK truckers are thought to be female - that's just 3,000.
And these women face a daily barrage of prejudice while doing their job - including being gawped at by men while driving and mocked while reversing.
For Gina, smashing the stereotype of the masculine trucker is very important.
She's decked out her cabin with girly, fluffy touches, to prove that anyone can drive an 18 tonne wagon - not just burly blokes.
On the front of her rig is the old Irish trucker slogan "Keep 'er Lit" - meaning keep going - in bright pink, and she jokes that her lorry is "powered by fairy dust".
"If any of the boys have to drive this lorry they're mortified because it's all pink, everywhere," Gina jokes on the new series of Lorry Ladies, which starts tonight on 7.30pm on BBC One. "I've made it as girly as I can. It does stand out a good bit."
And Gina isn't alone. Jade O'Kane is another young trucker hoping to become part of a new generation of women behind the wheel of a HGV.
The glamorous 23-year-old has been working as a care assistant, but she's now set her sights on breaking into the haulage business.
"I love being out on the road," she says. "I pass so many lorries every day and I think 'I wish that was me.'"
She has recently passed a week-long intensive course to get her truck driving licence, and now she's looking forward to getting a lorry of her own.
Jade's instructor is 34-year-old Joanne McCubbin - another no-nonsense woman helping to shake up the male-dominated haulage industry.
As well as teaching people how to drive them, she's also an enthusiastic attendee at lorry shows, where top truckers compete to earn prizes for having the most original and best-decorated vehicles.
And she says that she's seeing more and more women who have chosen, like her, to live life in the slow lane.
"It's really nice to see that there's a lot of women who are out there driving," she says. "We're still a very low percentage but we're definitely getting there."
Fellow trucker Brigid Donnelly, 40, who lives in Northern Ireland is one of the organisers - and puts on truck shows almost every weekend.
She tells Sun Online that she's started seeing more and more women driving their own 20-tonne machines.
"I love the buzz of being behind the big wheel," she says. "And I still love seeing the looks on some men's faces when they realise it's a woman driving.
"When you go out onto the road you just feel free. You're your own person. I just love driving. I could drive all day every day."
Brigid got into trucking thanks to her dad - a fellow lorry driver who passed down a love of cruising down the open road.
"Needless to say, my good driving skills come from my mother though," she jokes on the show.
"My husband thinks it’s brilliant that I'm also a driver now. He’s always encouraging me and pushing me to get better."
While Brigid is a natural in the cab, she's very much in the minority among the community of 300,000 truckers who haul goods all over our country.
The same is the case all over the world.
Blayze Williams is one of just three female truckers on her team of 19 in Western Australia.
The 31-year-old, who claims to be the hottest trucker in the world, recently said: "It's a shame there isn't more women when you think there would be."
But there are signs that the number of female truckers is on the rise.
“It’s got to the point now where women are wanting to do this more now," Brigid tells us. "They know that they can and that they are going to be accepted into that business.
“You’ll get the odd comment like: ‘a woman can’t do a man’s job’ - but it’s great to be able to prove them wrong.
"Sometimes I would say women are better at it than the men are."
Likewise, for Gina, snarky comments are just something which comes bundled with sitting in the driver's seat of an enormous truck.
"Some people are surprised to see a girl like me and wonder if I can do it, but I'm used to heavy work," she told The Belfast Telegraph .
"Other people are still astonished to see a girl driving a big lorry at all and I am frequently asked if I can reverse.
"Sometimes people will say 'well done' to me. You could become paranoid but I just get on with it."
The festival Brigid organises is called The Mid Ulster Truck Show - a massive weekend bash for drivers and their trucks, with owners competing for prizes in 21 different categories.
And Angela Rippon, the very first host of Top Gear, and the presenter of Lorry Ladies, says she's noticed something encouraging about this year's meet-up.
"The main thing that struck me at this festival is the number of female drivers who are out there," she says.
Brigid was delighted too - and she says that this year's show saw a record number of female attendees.
“This is the first year that we’ve had so many female drivers at our festival," she tells us. “It was something that was never seen a lot, women driving a truck, and so young girls didn't think they could do it.
"For a long time I thought the same, but I went out there and I did it. And I passed my test the first time round with only two minors.
“Now a younger generation is seeing that and thinking: ‘we’re able to do this’. It's girl power all the way."
Lorry Ladies airs tonight at 7.30 on BBC1.
