American parents are up against a lot—a society obsessed with hyperindividualism, a childcare crisis , and Republicans in Congress blocking plans for free pre-K and paid family leave . What we need is a cultural overhaul. But what we can have in the meantime is aunts. Aunts by blood and aunts by choice. Aunts who send a birthday card once a year, and aunts who FaceTime every day.
And an indispensable group, not new but with a new name and TikTok fame thinks to Cat Ward: The Messy Hot Aunt.

Ward was inspired by conversations around “rich mom culture” and coastal grandmothers. “I saw those as more aspirational, but the messy hot aunt is definitely more realistic,” she tells Glamour . The messy hot aunt is “effortlessly cool but she’s also a work in progress. She may not have everything together, but she at least wants to look like she does,” she says. The coastal grandmother is eating fresh, seasonal vegetables and indulging in a Bloody Mary or two. The messy hot aunt is still drunk from last night, but she’ll always share the last piece of gum in her purse. She drives a car full of garbage, swears fluently, and makes jokes about taking your kid to get a tattoo . You’d leave your child with the messy hot aunt, but with white-hot fear in your heart.
The messy hot aunt is a subcategory of the better known character the cool aunt or the fun aunt, a child-free woman who graces beleaguered parent friends and siblings with her eternally youthful presence. The cool aunt might not change your baby's diaper, but she will take your teenagers for the weekend when they become so feral and hormonal that you’re worried they’ll kill you in your sleep. TikTok creator Alexia Del Valle’s cool aunt videos regularly go viral. She comes from a big Puerto Rican family on the East Coast and bases her character on many of her real aunts, particularly the “five or six” to whom she’s especially close.

“One of my aunts—she needs to be the center of attention,” Del Valle says with a laugh. “She’s in her 50s, and she does not care: Everyone needs to look at her when she walks in the room. She knew she looked good, and she would say it.” Another aunt “was the one, if you were to get in trouble, she would defend you. She was ready to talk about boys or relationships, things you wouldn’t typically talk to your mom about.” The cool aunt, she says, is somewhere between a sister and a mom. She’s a role model for her younger relatives, helping to bridge the gap between girlhood and womanhood.
Ward’s version, the messy hot aunt, is child-free by choice. She’s complete, content. Ward, who is in her 30s, isn’t actually an aunt or a parent and has never aspired to have her own kids. “I think the messy hot aunt represents that invisible demographic that we really don’t see a lot in media—she doesn’t want children, she doesn’t want to get married, and she’s totally fine with that,” she says. The messy hot aunt has income, free time, and a worldview that revolves around living, not creating life.
Del Valle’s version, the cool aunt, may be in search of her own kids or a partner, and that doesn’t make her pitiable; it makes her vibrant. Del Valle remembers her own cool aunt growing up. “She was single! She was trying to find herself a man,” she jokes. “Anywhere we went, like if I had attractive teachers, she literally would be like, ‘Slide him my number, give him my Facebook!’” It made her a perfect person for a teenager to go to with questions about dating and relationships. Her aunt demonstrated the process of looking for a worthy partner. “It was funny being able to watch her live her life unapologetically,” Del Valle says.
For many years the archetype of the spinster aunt was a fixture in literature, like the irritable Aunt March in Little Women , Agatha Christie’s creaky, clever Miss Marple, Harry Potter ’s vicious Aunt Marge. Often these characters have been written as a warning of what will happen to women who don’t marry—that they’ll become disliked and alienated, irrelevant in a culture most comfortable with women when they are ensconced in the nuclear family. Sometimes these aunts have been allowed to be fun—think Hilda and Zelda in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, or Auntie Mame, the character who spawned a book, a Broadway musical, and multiple movies with her slogan, “Life’s a banquet, and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death!”
With a culture that has increasing financial mobility for women outside the bounds of marriage, this segment has expanded. Years ago, writer Melanie Notkin of savvyauntie.com coined the term PANK to describe this group: Professional Aunt, No Kids. “She has other things in life that spark so much joy within her,” explains Ward. “It’s not to say that she has anything against children. She just doesn’t need that in her life.”
Both the messy hot aunt—with her repudiation of the “You’ll want kids later!” warning that gets thrown at all child-free-by-choice women—and the cool aunt—trying to pick up a date at her niece’s christening—offer joyful alternatives to falling in line with social expectations that get placed on women. It takes a village to raise a child, but sometimes you’re lucky if you just get a few aunts.
