Typically, a sexual health nurse works in a clinic that specializes in family planning or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). She could be in charge of disseminating information about various forms of contraception. She may also perform pelvic exams or test for STDs at other times. The nurse may also speak to groups to raise awareness about the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) (AIDS).
People frequently seek family planning advice from a sexual health nurse. This expert can counsel clients on the various types of birth control options available. She might also instruct her patients on how to use various forms of contraception to ensure that they are as effective as possible.
A physical examination may be required in some cases before a patient can be prescribed certain types of birth control. These exams could be performed a sexual health nurse, who would then report the results to the clinic physician. In some cases, she may prescribe certain forms of contraception to her patients, such as giving them the birth control shot.
Other times, a physical exam is required to check for STDs. A sexual health nurse may check for warts on a person’s genitals. She may also take blood and test it for diseases like syphilis or gonorrhea. If a patient is diagnosed with an STD, the nurse may request medication from the clinic physician.
A sexual health nurse may be asked to speak to various groups about HIV and AIDS from time to time. This is done in order to raise awareness and, hopefully, prevent the spread of these diseases. She may discuss the various ways in which these diseases can be contracted and suggest ways to reduce the risk of infection. People who believe they are at risk are often encouraged to get tested for these diseases.
A sexual health nurse may be able to offer advice if a person tests positive for HIV. This could include a referral to a doctor for treatment and a mental health professional for counseling and moral support. She may occasionally assist the patient in informing his family and friends of the diagnosis.
The requirements for becoming a sexual health nurse vary region, but most require at least two years of college. Before working in this capacity, many places require nurses to pass a licensing exam. Two years of practical experience or college courses in reproductive health are usually required as well.

Become a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

Washington State needs more trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners. This is even more true in rural areas where access to this specialized type of patient care can support victims’ recovery from the traumatic experience of sexual assault in often under-resourced rural communities. If you are a Washington RN who has thought about SANE training, WCN is offering a practicum fellowship opportunity for training this fall.
“According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three women and one in four men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes. The effects of experiencing an assault can be both physical and psychological, necessitating specialized care that embodies the concept of cura personalis , or care for the entire person. This holistic attention to the entire individual is the expertise of clinicians like nurses.
SANE education programs are designed to train nurses to address survivors’ specific needs. After completion of this training, SANEs become uniquely qualified to treat this vulnerable patient group. This means that they can provide trauma-informed care to minimize the harm of invasive exams that may trigger a patient. In doing so, they can also equip their patients with forensic evidence that can be used if they decide to report their assault.” Georgetown University School of Nursing

Want a Career in Forensic Nursing?

Explore Opportunities
To become a SANE, you must first be a registered nurse (or advanced practice), preferably with two years or more experience in areas of practice that require advanced physical assessment skills, such as emergency, critical care and maternal child health. The SANE training should meet the IAFN SANE Education Guidelines and will consist of both classroom and clinical components. In addition, nurses should understand their local community requirements as they vary significantly between state, province, or country Boards of Nursing and/or Colleges of Nursing as it relates to SANE practice.
After beginning practice as a SANE, nurses who have obtained SANE training and meet the clinical practice requirements have the opportunity to take a board certification examination through the Association. The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A®) and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner-Pediatric (SANE-P®) board certification tests are for SANEs who care for this specific population of patients. The eligibility requirements can be found in the SANE Certification handbook.
