It premiered at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or.
Pedro Almodóvar 's uncanny blend of romantic comedy and horror movie was so controversial in its day it went to court. Miramax sued the MPAA for slapping Tie Me Up! with an X rating (generally reserved for porn). Tie Me Up! was released unrated and still grossed a considerable sum for a foreign film, and one year later the NC-17 rating debuted.
Andrew Haigh 's subtle, insightful look at three gay BFFs in the Bay Area was just on the cusp of greatness when it was canceled after two seasons. HBO at least greenlit a two-hour special event to tie up loose ends—too neatly, in fact. Looking still has a dedicated fanbase; maybe one day down the line we'll get an HBO Max revival. Such a thing seems more possible than ever in light of the recently-announced Sex and the City revival series.
David Morrissey and Sharon Stone in 'Basic Instinct 2'
Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas starred in Paul Verhoeven 's iconic 1992 chiller about a dupe who falls for a murderous bombshell. The original was a massive box-office hit that made Stone a household name and grossed over $352 million (nearly $700 million today). The long-delayed sequel ups the sleaze, downs the already-low IQ, but it's a nudity-filled thimble-brained, violent good time if you're in the right mood.
Pre-game for And Just Like That ... with the highly lucrative big-screen adventures of NYC's fab four. Both films were mammoth box-office hits, even though the second received harsh reviews from critics. And Just Like That finishes a 10-episode run February 3.
