The story of Albert Alonzo "Doc" Ames is perhaps the greatest political scandal in Minnesota history. As mayor of Minneapolis:Ames exposed the city to national humiliation&;and helped jump-start an era of reform. At the turn of the twentieth century:Minneapolis was moving away from a time of political rings:frontier justice:and old boys' clubs to a more civic-minded way of governing. But in 1901:the affable:degenerate Doc Ames:a former Minneapolis mayor well past his political prime:duped his way back into the office. Ames appointed his brother as chief of police:and together they assembled a rogues' gallery of thieves to squeeze as much money out of the city as quickly as they could. Under Ames's leadership:criminals walked beats wearing policemans uniforms. City detectives robbed prominent citizens. Police maintained arrangements with madams and saloonkeepers:extracting pay for the privilege of openly ignoring the law. With a card game gone bad:and a complaint to a newspaper:it all fell apart. Ames fled Minneapolis in mid-term to avoid prosecution. And at Doc Ames's spectacular downfall:the citizens of Minneapolis finally woke up and took their city back.

True crime/historical fiction can be like reading either a thesis or full of cheap scandal. This fell into neither of those traps. A fascinating read about a period of history in a part of the world that was completely new to me. What a character Doc Ames was and there was plenty of genuine scandal handled just right. The parallels between him and this period and modern USA Federal politics were thought provoking too.

Excellent Storytelling by Erik Rivenes
Thoroughly excellent book by Erik Rivenes. I’m a long-time fan of Erik’s podcast, Most Notorious, and I had high expectations which were more than met. The research the author did really makes this book stand out—and finding so many photos from this time period is no easy task. I have some mixed feelings about Doc. He was a character. His blustery style was a little much but also endearing. He was a man who could have been anything he chose to be, but his habits, the people he associated with, and his inability to let his better self triumph led him down a dark road. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history, the study of human nature, or just enjoys a great story!

Great piece of Minneapolis history
I bought this book because I really enjoy the "most notorious" podcast and I've been trying to order books from the show. As someone who is from the southwest, I knew absolutely nothing about doc Ames before hearing about it from the podcast. I enjoyed hearing about life in the city as well as the tumultuous family relationships (spoiler alert, the daughter is a bamf). I know very little about cons so including the diagrams of all the cards games were helpful. I think the only regret I have about buying this book is that no one around me knows who doc Ames was, probably a drawback of not living in Minnesota.

My friend, Yucel, said I should read this book. Glad he did. I can't believe there was an actual person named Michael Cohen who was one of Doc's henchmen!

Great read! Erik Rivenes has a way of writing that transports you to that time period. He has done thorough research on Doc Ames, and those around him. I recommend this book for those interested in history, and especially history related to Minnesota.
