T wo articles in December's Family Planning Perspectives —both extensively reported in the New York Times and USA Today —might make you think that the nation's teens have just started to indulge in new, dangerous sexual practices that require a forceful response from public health officials. But look closer, and you'll see that the articles are less about health than politics.
Unquestionably, the sexual behavior the two articles depict is profoundly disturbing. One in ten boys aged 15 through 19, for example, has had anal sex with girls. Far more commonplace is oral sex, with teens now viewing it as something, like kissing, that you might do with someone you don't care about much. Many virgins, viewing oral sex as "not really sex," think they're remaining abstinent when they do it. So pervasive among teens has oral sex become, experts warn, that oral herpes and pharyngeal gonorrhea are on the rise. Most troubling is the growing acceptance of this "body-part sex" as early as the seventh grade. Some 12- and 13-year-old girls, it seems, consider fellatio the necessary price of hanging on to a cool boyfriend or looking sophisticated to friends; and, they reason, it removes some of the pressure to go all the way.
Yet neither article tells us much we don't already know. One study, based on data from as far back as 1988 and 1995, shows that the percentage of boys having intercourse or receiving oral sex, while high, has barely changed during those seven years. The second, more timely, study, based on interviews with health professionals about reports of rising oral sex among adolescents, found no consensus: some believe there's more oral sex; some think kids just talk about it more. The one recent behavior shift that is clear is the increase in younger teens practicing oral sex, a development reported in 19 newspaper stories in the past 18 months.
So if there's nothing really new here, why the fuss? The answer reveals itself in one report's title, "Oral Sex Among Adolescents: Is It Sex or Is It Abstinence?" With congressional funding for abstinence-only sex education about to reach its five-year limit, a regrouped public health establishment is here to say: it doesn't work. "What concerns me is what kids don't know. They're not protecting themselves," as Linda Alexander of the American Social Health Association told the Times . The clear implication: to protect kids, educators need to get into the specifics of oral and anal sex and teach kids how to use condoms and dental dams. Sound familiar?
The critics' recommended return to more "enlightened" sex ed isn't a solution; it's a proximate cause of the problem. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the main reason kids cite for avoiding intercourse is fear of pregnancy and STDs. Kids have decided, it appears, that oral sex is a safer alternative. In other words, it is our almost exclusive focus on "risk reduction" and "negative health outcomes" that has helped to mainstream teen oral sex. But if this dehumanized, soulless, loveless, and morally vacuous language is all adults have to offer, is it any surprise that middle schoolers see no problem with body-part sex?

A sixth-grade teacher in Arizona accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student performed oral sex on him in a classroom — and told the teen she wanted him “every day with no time limit,” according to court records.
Brittany Zamora, a 27-year-old teacher at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear, allegedly had sex with the 13-year-old student three times and also performed oral sex on him in her car during encounters from Feb. 1 through March 8, according to court records obtained by the Arizona Republic .
Zamora and the teen also traded naked photos, he told police, saying their relationship started when the married teacher began “flirting” with him in a classroom chat group. She then sent the teen a nude picture of herself and another clad in lingerie.
During one exchange, the teen told Zamora he wanted to have sex with her again, court records show.
“I know baby!” Zamora responded. “I want you every day with no time limit.”
In another message, according to court records, Zamora said: “If I could quit my job and (have sex with) you all day long, I would.”
Zamora was arrested last week after the teen’s parents found text messages indicating a sexual relationship between the pair. The texts were discovered because the boy’s parents had installed an app to monitor his phone, police said.
Zamora was taken into custody Thursday on one count of obscene material transmission to a minor, according to the Arizona Republic. A court commissioner then found probable cause to hold her on suspicion of eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of child molestation and one count of transmitting obscene material, according to the newspaper.
Zamora told a court commissioner that she would “love to go home, to be released” during her initial appearance in court on Friday.
“I’d love to go home to my husband,” Zamora told Commissioner Melissa Zabor, who set her bond at $250,000.
A second student has also told police he saw Zamora and the 13-year-old student having sex. Zamora also sent a second student naked photos of herself, he told police.
The alleged sexual relationship was reported to police late Wednesday by the school’s principal after the teen’s parents found the concerning text messages. Screenshots of the incriminating texts were relayed to police, according to Liberty School District interim superintendent Richard Rundhaug.
“The safety of our students is our #1 priority,” Rundhaug said in a statement posted on the school’s website . “Transparency is equally important. We are fully cooperating with the Goodyear Police Department and will comment further at the appropriate time.”
Rundhaug said in a statement a day later that the arrested staff member would not return to the school.
“This incident has been reported to the Arizona State Board of Education so they can make a determination regarding the teacher’s certification,” Rundhaug said. “Additionally, we have school counselors and school psychologists at Las Brisas Academy today to help students and staff members cope with this incident. The school psychologists and school counselors will also be available for the foreseeable future to continue to attend to our students’ and staff members’ needs.”
The teen’s parents also told police that Zamora’s husband “harassed” the teen’s father on the phone, begging for him not to contact authorities about the allegations.
Zamora’s husband told the teen’s father that his wife had “made a big mistake, but that she loved the kids,” according to court records obtained by the newspaper.
Zamora’s husband also seemingly suggested that he and the teen’s father fight each other to settle the bizarre love triangle, suggesting that they “meet up” to “settle this.” The teen’s father ignored the invitation and hung up, court records show.
Zamora, who started working at the school less than a year ago, is due to appear in court Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic. It was unclear if she had hired an attorney.

Two people were arrested and charged with sexual abuse after a woman records and posts online the video of a teenager engaging in oral sex and performing other disturbing acts with her one-year-old granddaughter.
According to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation, the man, identified as 19-year old Steven Anthony Jackson, engaged in oral sex and other deviant acts with a girl while her grandmother, identified as 42-year old Lisa Williamson, recorded the gruesome act.
The woman later streamed the disturbing video on a subscription-based pornographic portal.
The law enforcement was alerted about the video after an unnamed person from another state became aware of it.
Considering the sensitivity of the issue, the girl’s name was not revealed by the police. Both the suspects hail from Hartford, Geneva County, Alabama. They were arrested late Thursday (May 7).
Williamson was charged with multiple counts including permitting a child to engage in the production of obscene material, sex abuse of a child, production of child pornography, dissemination of child pornography, and possession of child pornography. Jackson was charged with production of child pornography and first-degree sodomy.
They were currently held in the Geneva County Jail. The relation between the child and Jackson was not revealed.
The State Bureau of Investigation was yet to comment on the incident . This was an ongoing investigation and no further details were available at the moment.
In a similar incident reported in April, a 5-month-old boy suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage after his teen mother assaulted him. The woman, identified as 19-year-old Destany Jae Burge, who hails from Madison, Wisconsin, was arrested and charged with multiple counts including, neglect of a dependent, a level 3 felony, and false informing, a Class A misdemeanor. The exact details of the abuse were not revealed.
In another incident , a 3-year-old boy died due to abuse after he was admitted to the hospital with fractured ribs, two broken arms, and bleeding in his brain. The boy, identified as Amari Boone, was pronounced dead on Easter Sunday. According to the police, after their mother lost custody of them, Amari and his 19-month-old brother were living with two men who were court-appointed caregivers and also friends of their family.
