Losing your virginity is a big deal. It's not uncommon to have all sorts of romantic and exciting fantasies of how your first time will play out . But for most people, the reality is that their first time having sex was less than perfect.
One reason may be that the average American loses their virginity at age 17 , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And, because this only represents heterosexual (penile/vaginal) intercourse, and the definition of "virginity" varies from individual to individual, the average age may be even younger.
It makes sense that with lack of experience, nerves, and some pretty skewed views of what sex actually looks like, that people's first times are usually not so great or not what they expected.
Reddit users shared some of their awkward, funny, and downright embarrassing stories about losing their virginity . Of course, these examples of first times are just for fun, as we can't independently authenticate the stories.
"My boyfriend is in the Navy and I still live with my parents, so when he had a free weekend we took advantage of the situation and booked a hotel together for the night. He put about 1/4 of himself in and I felt like I was getting stabbed with a piece of wood down there. We spent almost the whole night trying to get it in. It has been a long time since I watched such an awesome teen movie. I always want to find a movie which can represent our feeling when it comes to first love. And this movie is the ONE! Aubrey is sexy and dependent, more mature than girls of her own age. Dave is smart but shy most of the time. Both of them are great people and when they meet each other, the chemical just burst.It is so hard to find someone you can just keep talking to. So when they are talking about dream, traveling, hobby, I can't help smiling because this is so real. Although some of our experience is way much personal, we just want to share our thoughts with the ONE for no reason. This movie also reminds me of Flipped. Both of them are about first love. The most different part for me is that Julie in Flipped is brave while Aubrey is more vulnerable and sensitive.But at the end of the day, you'll have your own happy ending. In addition, I used to check the ranking before I watch a movie. After watching this, ranking is of no importance any longer. This movie is just so real, so romantic and so awesome!!!

No matter how much advice you received from friends, family and school, no one can ever really prepare you for that first break-up, how to go about your first kiss or what on earth to do when womanhood approaches you in the form of blood flowing from your nether regions. Our pubescent years are filled with tackling these ground-breaking life events in our very different ways, some of which we don’t always find comfortable to talk about. I sat down with a plethora of ladies and questioned them on just a few of the highs and lows of ‘femaleness’ and their experiences.
‘I did kiss someone when I was 3 but I don’t think that counts (it was magical). It happened again when I was 13 with a disgusting boy at a party, it was like a washing machine and then I was gone with the wind (again, magical).’
‘When I was 18, at a house party. He asked me if I’d like to go out for some air. At this point, I had no idea what going out for air meant. He just pushed his face into mine and frankly, it was awful. But he’s now gay so I feel like it’s all worked out for the best.’
‘He was my boyfriend in year 9. We’d been out in the park, he walked me home and we kissed on my front door step. Worst moment of my life, and I don’t think I kissed another boy for a year.’

‘I think I was going to a party when I was like 15 and some people were allowed to stay over. I’m not sure what I thought would happen but I wanted to be prepared at all costs, so I stole my mum’s blunt razor and got to work. It was a real hack job. I then stayed away from boys at all costs, no one needed to see that.’
‘Don’t remember when it actually happened but girls started talking about it so I went home and gave shaving a try. Probably for the best because I got fingered a week later.’
