Middle-class Canadian girls are giving oral sex after school to pay for sweaters and handbags.
Worlds away from the poverty, neglect and drug abuse that are the hallmarks of prostitution, teenagers who appear bright and well- adjusted are prostituting themselves without batting an eyelash.
According to independent filmmaker Sharlene Azam's documentary and book, Oral Sex is the New Goodnight Kiss , the normalization of oral sex as an acceptable teenage activity has led vulnerable girls to use it as a way of becoming socially accepted.
For some in Azam's film, this ultimately leads to payment for sex because, after all, if they are doing it anyway, why not get paid for it?
Azam, 38, a former columnist for the Toronto Star , interviewed Canadian girls (and their parents) who had been discovered by school officials to be involved in sexual activity with groups of boys, as well as girls charged by police. This includes a prostitution ring at an Edmonton high school.
Parents, she says, were not paying close enough attention to their daughters.
Azam is married, with a 3-year-old daughter, and splits her time between Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Q: What sparked this documentary and book?
A: I was at a high school in Burnaby, B.C., researching sexual attitudes for a film I was working on when I was asked to talk to the students in the Flex Program. The Flex kids have been out of school for various problems. In that class, I met a lovely blond girl with perfect makeup and a Louis Vuitton bag who seemed completely out of place. I asked the teacher about her and was told that she had been recruited by a girl at school and trafficked to a small town where she was kept in a motel. That was the beginning of my research into teenage recruiters and the middle-class girls they target. This was a new kind of predator.
Q: You were able to get parental permission to film the girls who were under age. How?
A: Getting the releases was not difficult because the parents wanted to talk about this. There is no forum for them. There is no counselling. There is no social group for a mother whose teenage daughter is having sex with five men a night. The difficulty ... is for the mothers to finally take responsibility for what has happened to their daughters.
The girls were okay talking about giving oral sex to a number of boys – they didn't stumble with the words or appear shy or ashamed. The reason they speak about it unflinchingly is because it has become as benign and as acceptable as kissing. This is what our culture has become. Think back to the '80s when girls would blush when talking about their first kiss. We are way past that point with blowjobs. The real question is, "What's next?"
Q: A lot has been written about rainbow oral sex parties. What do the girls get out of it sexually?
A: I think Heather, 16, explains it best. "I began to associate my own personal power with giving a man pleasure. I liked hearing them make noises because it made me feel powerful to be able to affect someone in that way. I didn't know I had so much power."
Q: Has feminism failed young girls?
A: We failed our girls. What's happened to our girls? We have let Girls Gone Wild and the media culture define them.
Q: What is the boys' role in all of this? Did any of them have to deal with the consequences?
A: It is important to remember that the responsibility lies with parents, teachers and adults. Your question suggests that another adolescent should take responsibility for what is happening. Boys are downloading pornography on their cellphones. This is how they are learning how they are supposed to treat girls.
A: It is not as much a lesson as it is a warning. Who is going to save our girls? You asked me about feminism. I interviewed Gloria Steinem, who was a voice for women. Who is the voice for our girls? Is it the media? Is it boys' opinions of them? Is it the negative images of themselves that they've created from advertising imagery?
The book is available through thenewgoodnightkiss.com. The film aired on European television last year to an estimated 1 million-plus viewers.

A social media video clip reportedly showing two students having sex in a Maryland high school classroom is under investigation by school officials and legal authorities.
The incident occurred in a classroom within Woodlawn High School, a school in the Baltimore County town of Gwynn Oak. Upon learning of the video, Principal Jamel Jernigan alerted parents in an October 8 letter. The letter has only recently been reported by local media.
"I was recently made aware of a social media post of a video involving Woodlawn High School students engaged in highly inappropriate behavior while in class," the letter said, according to WJZ-TV.
"An investigation is underway with school administration, our [Baltimore County Public Schools] safety manager and the Baltimore County Police Department," the letter continued.
Jernigan's letter didn't specify how many students were involved, their ages or the date of the incident. A student is believed to have recorded the incident, the aforementioned news outlet noted. It's also unclear if the alleged sex act or the reposting of the video constituted crimes.
The principal's letter did state, however, that students could be subject to possible disciplinary action if their behavior was found to be "inappropriate for the school environment."
The school has reportedly declined to comment on the case beyond acknowledging the existence of the principal's letter.
Newsweek contacted the Baltimore County Police Department for comment.
The recording and transfer of sexual content between teens have become more common as more teens own smartphones, the journal Pediatrics reported in May 2019.
At least 1 in 4 teens has received sexually explicit texts or emails, according to an April 2018 study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics . Approximately 1 in 12 teens has forwarded sexual content to others without the consent of the sexual partners involved, the study added.
Sometimes sexual content is sent out to others as a form of cyberbullying known as "revenge porn." Revenge porn, which can originate from a former sexual partner or someone else who recorded other people's sex acts without their knowledge, is often meant to shame sexual partners.
U.S. state laws on teen sexting vary widely from state to state. The laws and their application depend on several factors. Those factors include the age of the people involved, the explicitly graphic nature of the content itself and how widely the content is shared.
Some states have decriminalized the production and sharing of teenage sexual content between teens, as long as the creation and sharing are consensual. Other states punish teen sexting as a misdemeanor charge or with felony child pornography charges.
Maryland has laws forbidding revenge porn, according to Cyberbulling.org. Maryland teens who engage in sexting can receive up to 20 years in prison and a lifetime sexual offender status for producing or possessing teen sexual content, the Pediatrics article noted.
"Interestingly, in these states, a teen sexter can be charged as both an offender and a victim," the article said.

A sixth-grade teacher in Arizona accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student performed oral sex on him in a classroom — and told the teen she wanted him “every day with no time limit,” according to court records.
Brittany Zamora, a 27-year-old teacher at Las Brisas Academy Elementary School in Goodyear, allegedly had sex with the 13-year-old student three times and also performed oral sex on him in her car during encounters from Feb. 1 through March 8, according to court records obtained by the Arizona Republic .
Zamora and the teen also traded naked photos, he told police, saying their relationship started when the married teacher began “flirting” with him in a classroom chat group. She then sent the teen a nude picture of herself and another clad in lingerie.
During one exchange, the teen told Zamora he wanted to have sex with her again, court records show.
“I know baby!” Zamora responded. “I want you every day with no time limit.”
In another message, according to court records, Zamora said: “If I could quit my job and (have sex with) you all day long, I would.”
Zamora was arrested last week after the teen’s parents found text messages indicating a sexual relationship between the pair. The texts were discovered because the boy’s parents had installed an app to monitor his phone, police said.
Zamora was taken into custody Thursday on one count of obscene material transmission to a minor, according to the Arizona Republic. A court commissioner then found probable cause to hold her on suspicion of eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of child molestation and one count of transmitting obscene material, according to the newspaper.
Zamora told a court commissioner that she would “love to go home, to be released” during her initial appearance in court on Friday.
“I’d love to go home to my husband,” Zamora told Commissioner Melissa Zabor, who set her bond at $250,000.
A second student has also told police he saw Zamora and the 13-year-old student having sex. Zamora also sent a second student naked photos of herself, he told police.
The alleged sexual relationship was reported to police late Wednesday by the school’s principal after the teen’s parents found the concerning text messages. Screenshots of the incriminating texts were relayed to police, according to Liberty School District interim superintendent Richard Rundhaug.
“The safety of our students is our #1 priority,” Rundhaug said in a statement posted on the school’s website . “Transparency is equally important. We are fully cooperating with the Goodyear Police Department and will comment further at the appropriate time.”
Rundhaug said in a statement a day later that the arrested staff member would not return to the school.
“This incident has been reported to the Arizona State Board of Education so they can make a determination regarding the teacher’s certification,” Rundhaug said. “Additionally, we have school counselors and school psychologists at Las Brisas Academy today to help students and staff members cope with this incident. The school psychologists and school counselors will also be available for the foreseeable future to continue to attend to our students’ and staff members’ needs.”
The teen’s parents also told police that Zamora’s husband “harassed” the teen’s father on the phone, begging for him not to contact authorities about the allegations.
Zamora’s husband told the teen’s father that his wife had “made a big mistake, but that she loved the kids,” according to court records obtained by the newspaper.
Zamora’s husband also seemingly suggested that he and the teen’s father fight each other to settle the bizarre love triangle, suggesting that they “meet up” to “settle this.” The teen’s father ignored the invitation and hung up, court records show.
Zamora, who started working at the school less than a year ago, is due to appear in court Thursday, according to the Arizona Republic. It was unclear if she had hired an attorney.

Teenagers are in trouble after having sex in a high school bathroom and then posting a recording of it on social media.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (WPVI) -- Teenagers are in trouble after having sex in a Florida high school bathroom and then posting a recording of it on social media.
It happened Tuesday after school hours at Fort Myers High School.
The incident involved a girl and as many as two dozen boys, according to a Lee County Sheriff's Office incident report.
Students are wondering where the administration was when all of this was going on.
"I just don't see how that could've happened because there is so much security in there, like the teachers are really on top of all of that," student Erin Bollinger said.
Students say the whole thing was recorded and posted on social media.
"There's girls that saw the video once and it hurt, it is just so disturbing to them," student Casey Winn said.
