The producers dished on what could have been.
On the 10-year anniversary of its first episode, we are all probably fondly remembering our favorite outrageous Gossip Girl plot. There was the time Serena kind of killed a guy, the threesome scene that involved Hilary Duff, and more teenage drug use, deceit and casual sex then had ever been portrayed on broadcast television before. Yet, apparently there were some things The CW wouldn’t let the show get away with.
The good people over at Vulture posted an interview with co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and executive producer Joshua Safran about the plot lines and scenes that almost made it to air—and friends, there are some real gems here.
The best reveal of all, though, is when Safran casually hints at some too-sexy-for-The-CW scenes, saying, “I only regret things like not showing Chuck finger Blair and the dildos and other sexual stuff.”
“We had a story about Chuck taking care of Blair under a table at Xan’s…I don’t think we were able to do it, but we hinted at it,” he continued, without actually clarifying what Xan’s is.
As for the sex toys, that was obviously a Georgina Sparks prank, similar to the porn she sends Serena near the end of season one. “There were dildos [Georgina] sent to Dan at the house, and we had these really huge dildos in this house that Penn [Badgley, who played Dan] was so shocked to see—but we cut it because you couldn’t show them on air… The deleted-scene version… is hilarious because they’re like a foot and a half long. Penn was really shocked,” said Safran.
The co-creators also revealed that they heard “secondhand” that a teenage Jennifer Lawrence taped an audition to play Serena and was “bummed” she lost the role to Blake Lively. She shouldn’t have been so sad; according to a feature in Vanity Fair , Lively basically had the part the moment the series was born. And it’s not like Lawrence hasn’t done well for herself since otherwise.
Now Reading The Sexiest Moments From Gossip Girl
My high school experience was nothing like the characters in Gossip Girl 's. It wasn't just that I didn't attend galas on Friday nights, or that I didn't have a maid named Dorota upon which I flung my daily grievances. The kids on Gossip Girl were all gettin' some with such frequency and fervor that I'm surprised they had time to get into college.
By Season 6, it was impossible to keep track of the once and future flings between the core group of Blair (Leighton Meester), Serena ( Blake Lively ), Dan (Penn Badgley), Chuck (Ed Westwick ), and Nate (Chace Crawford). Despite how racy Gossip Girl was, there were some sex scenes that didn't make the cut.
"We had a story about Chuck taking care of Blair under a table at Xan's," Gossip Girl executive producer Joshua Safran told Vulture. "I don't think we were able to do it, but we hinted at it."
Alas — the scenes we'll never see, the lives we'll never have. Ten years after the Gossip Girl premiere, these steamy scenes that did make the cut are fresh on our mind.

On today, a most special day, the 10-year anniversary of the premiere of Gossip Girl , the good people over at Vulture posted an interview with cocreators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and executive producer Joshua Safran about the plot lines and scenes that almost made it to the air—and friends, there are some real gems here.
The best reveal of all, though, is when Safran casually hints at some too-OMG-for-The-CW sexytimes, saying, "I only regret things like not showing Chuck finger Blair and the dildos and other sexual stuff." Oh sure, fingering and dildos. Right. What!?
"We had a story about Chuck taking care of Blair under a table at Xan’s…. I don’t think we were able to do it, but we hinted at it," he explained. And here I would like to make a note: After extensive googling and years of watching the show , I have no idea what "Xan's" is. My best guess is that the X and D keys are very close together on a keyboard, and Chuck actually fingered Blair at Dan's , a.k.a. the Humphrey loft in DUMBO. But "Xan's" is what the article says, so if I'm wrong and Xan's is a restaurant or something, please let me know.
As for the dildos, that was obviously a Georgina Sparks prank, similar to the porn she sends Serena near the end of season one. “There were dildos [Georgina] sent to Dan at the house, and we had these really huge dildos in this house that Penn [Badgley, who played Dan] was so shocked to see—but we cut it because you couldn’t show them on air…. The deleted-scene version…is hilarious because they’re like a foot and a half long. Penn was really shocked," said Safran.
The cocreators also revealed that they heard "secondhand" that a teenage Jennifer Lawrence taped an audition to play Serena and was "bummed" she lost the role to Blake Lively. She shouldn't have been so sad; according to a feature in Vanity Fair , Lively basically had the part the moment the series was born. And it's not like Lawrence hasn't done well for herself since—although we'd love to get her reaction to a big box of dildos.

Now Reading Not All Gossip Girl Sex Scenes Made It To TV

It's hard to believe that Gossip Girl premiered 10 years ago today. Love it or hate it, you probably heard a lot about it back in the day.
The CW series played a large part in putting New York magazine's Vulture on the map back in the day, thanks to Jessica Pressler and Chris Rovzar's recaps, which took on a life of their own and were often more entertaining than the show itself. In honor of the anniversary (and Vulture's history), the site dove deep into Gossip Girl content . Vulture even got the show's creators, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, to reveal some behind-the-scenes secrets from what they dubbed the Greatest Show of Our Time. As the recaps said, sound the trumpet, strumpets!
One of the juiciest details Savage and Schwartz revealed to Vulture is that for as provocative as the show was, it still faced pushback from Standards and Practices. Specifically, Gossip Girl had to tone down some sex scenes , including a juicy one between Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester).
"We had a story about Chuck taking care of Blair under a table at Xan's," Gossip Girl executive producer Joshua Safran told Vulture. "I don't think we were able to do it, but we hinted at it."
In a separate statement, Safran said that aside from not featuring much diversity, he regretted "things like not showing Chuck finger Blair and the dildos and other sexual stuff."
Hang on, what dildos? Apparently, there was one deleted scene where Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) sent Dan (Penn Badgley) a box of vibrators.
"There were dildos she sent to Dan at the house, and we had these really huge dildos in this house that Penn was so shocked to see — but we cut it, because you couldn't show them on air," Safran told Vulture. "The deleted-scene version, which I don't think we ever put anywhere, is hilarious, because they're like a foot and a half long. Penn was really shocked."
Sex toys and fingering, oh my! It seems Gossip Girl could have been a lot more salacious than it actually was.
