If you had to list all of the traits you're looking for in a male partner , it might read something like, "awesome sense of humor, sexy smile, and a shared love of tacos, hiking, and Ozark ." Penis size is pretty low on the list of must-have characteristics.

Still, plenty of men fear their penis size is below average. So what's that defined as? "In the sex-positive world, we like to use a broader spectrum for penis size," says Amy Baldwin, sex educator, sex and relationship coach, and co-host of the Shameless Sex Podcast . "We consider the average penis size in the U.S. to be about four to six inches long when erect. So a penis of below-average size could be anything less than four inches."

Baldwin also bears noting that different people prefer different sizes and fits. "Penises and vaginal canals come in all different shapes, lengths, and sizes," she notes. "Someone with a smaller vaginal canal may be happier with someone with a smaller penis."

Plenty of moves will maximize your pleasure if your partner's penis falls into the "smaller" category.

If you're a vulva owner, most of the nerve endings you want to hit during sex are located externally — in the clitoris, labia, and the first inch of the vaginal canal, points out Baldwin. "Beyond that point, there are generally fewer nerve endings, except the G-spot and cervix, but those points respond more to pressure," she adds.

For the most part, stimulating these external spots will lead to orgasm, so a smaller penis can easily offer plenty of pleasure to these spots with the right movement and technique, says Baldwin.

For instance, positions in which bodies are more closely connected will amplify stimulation of nerve-ending-rich zones and leave less room for the penis to slip out, notes Shan Boodram , a certified sexologist, and K-Y's intimacy educator.

Finding your go-to, hottest, most pleasurable position will always be a matter of exploration and experimentation to see what works best for you. But Baldwin and other experts recommend giving the following sex positions and techniques a whirl should your partner have a smaller penis.

Porn stars usually bust out a thrusting or pounding motion, but Baldwin suggests grinding instead. "This works well with the vulva-owning partner on top, face-to-face with the penis-owning partner," she explains. "Bring your bodies close together so that you aren't too perpendicular — a smaller penis may slip out if you aren't close enough. The vulva owner can then get comfortable, position their pelvis on the penis, and grind their body against it." Move your hips back and forth or even try some spirals.

Not only will grinding hit the external hot spots of the vulva, but it should also benefit your partner's pleasure. "Because the head of the penis has the most nerve endings, it will get plenty of action even with this adjusted position," notes Baldwin.

Gigi Engle , SKYN Sex & Intimacy Expert , certified sex coach, sexologist, and author, seconds this move and recommends putting a pillow under your hips for a bit of extra lift, which can offer a feeling of deeper penetration. She notes that you can also spread your butt cheek during the ride to engage even more nerve endings and sensations.

2. Bring your knees to your chest .

Rachel Sommer, Ph.D., a clinical sexologist and co-founder of My Sex Toy Guide , recommends lying on your back with your legs wide open, pulling your knees toward your chest. Your partner can then kneel in front of you and enter you from above. "This position allows for a direct approach to penetration," she explains. Plus, it leaves room for clitoral stimulation. If your partner holds your thighs in place, you can add a clit vibe to penetration.

You probably already know that doggy style lends itself to deeper penetration. If your partner has a smaller penis, you can get a greater sense of fullness by altering this position and lying flat while bringing your legs together, advises Engle.

"You can grab your favorite vibrator, and stick it between your legs, under your body, so you're riding it while your partner is riding you," says Engle. (She likes SKYN's Thrill for this.)

If you're a fan of a lot of friction, this move can set you up to achieve an orgasm fast.

4. Try missionary with one leg up — or even two.

Natasha Riley, a licensed professional counselor, and certified sex coach recommends lying on your back with one or both legs on your partner's shoulders. By getting your leg(s) out of the way, you'll set the stage for deeper penetration. "This is a super romantic position that allows for eye gaze and passionate kissing," she explains.

You can also add height to the hips with a cushion or pillow to bring you even closer to your partner, explains Riley.

Egg vibrators, like LELO's LYLA 2, are inserted into the vaginal canal and can sit up near the cervix. Adding one to partnered play can create a shallow space for your S.O.'s penis to move, points out Engle. "This will allow the vagina to feel fuller," she points out.

While your partner lies on their back, you can slide onto the penis while facing their feet, advises Riley. If you bring your legs closer together, you'll have more control over penetration depth. "This position is visually appealing for the man and allows for the woman to have easier access to stimulate her clitoris for heightened pleasure," she explains.

Your partner can also place a cushion or pillow under the small of their back to create a tilt and lift of their pelvis, which results in a greater feeling of fullness.

Consider this one next-level missionary. "Instead of having your legs spread apart, put them over your partner's shoulders," explains Engle. "They can lean into your body for great depth or hold onto your ankles for more support."

No matter how you and your partner get it on, you'll want to prioritize comfort, control, and creativity, says Boodram. "Comfort because if you are preoccupied with pain or fear of the pain, it's difficult to focus on pleasure; control, because great sex is intentional and having the ability to add a hand or toy in the mix, can make all the difference; and creativity because the brain gets excited when something feels new," she explains.

But when it comes to pinpointing the ultimate position that checks all these boxes, there really is no such thing as one size fits all.

We live in a world that awards undue and arbitrary importance to the size of a man’s penis.
“I think if you ask your average person what they think the average penis size is, they’d probably tell you something like six, six-and-a-half, or even seven [inches],” Vanessa Marin , a licensed sex therapist, tells WomensHealthMag.com. “This is something that there’s a lot of confusion and misinformation about. The average penis size is around five to five and a half inches [erect].”
As such, it’s often difficult to dislodge a sense of genital insecurity from a modestly-endowed man’s mind.
It bears noting that women don’t even care much: A survey of 1,100 Cosmopolitan readers (96 percent of whom identified as women) found 89 percent were unconcerned about their partner’s package size.
That's probably because most women know that penis size really isn’t the determining factor in sexual pleasure. It's really about finding the right O-inducing position or move.
Still, if your dude seems concerned about slippage—or you've experienced that IRL, here are six positions that are sure to satisfy:
Any position where the woman is on her back and her legs are in the air works well for a smaller penis, Marin says. So, lie back and pull your thighs to your chest while your partner positions himself over you. Drape your legs over his shoulders for entry, positioning them on either side of his neck, or even over one shoulder.
“If she crosses her legs at the ankles and rests those on his chest, that can work well because, again, it just creates a tighter fit,” Marin explains.
“Doggy style can work pretty well” for a more modest package, Marin advises. To assume the position, kneel on all fours and have your guy get on his knees behind you, or stand behind you while you kneel on the mattress. Controlled motions are key when it comes to smaller members and doggy style, according to Marin: “Have the guy focus more on the depth of his penetration rather than trying to pull all the way out, because doggy style can lead to slippage." Bonus: From this position, he has easy access to your clit.
Any position that has the two of you chest-to-chest and crotch to crotch, like this one, could work “really, really well,” Marin says. To achieve this one, have your guy sit on the edge of a bed or stable surface and straddle him, grinding against him while seated in his lap. Not only is grinding a surer bet for keeping his penis in place, it should give you some clitoral stimulation as well.
“Woman-on-top positions can be good because they lead to a lot of deep penetration,” Marin notes, adding that some smaller guys may feel a little anxious about slippage when they’re not in control of the motion. If your partner has a hard time focusing on anything but keeping his penis inside you when you’re on top, maybe try grinding or stirring motions rather than pumping up and down.
Similarly to the knees-to-chest position, the seashell works well because it allows for super close PIV contact—and your partner can grind or move in a circular motion, rather than thrust. Lying on your back, curl your pelvis up and your legs back toward your shoulders, spreading them in a V. Have your him enter you straight down, and if you can, narrow the space between your legs for a tighter fit. Or, depending on your flexibility, move both to one side of his collar bone.
“If you have a high bed or maybe a table or a countertop that’s safe for having sex on,” Marin advises, try having sex with your partner standing in front of you, while you lie back on your surface of choice. It’ll align your pelvis and give him more control, and you can also cross your ankles over one of his shoulders for a more snug sensation.

We’re always hearing that we could be having better sex, a better orgasm, or a better relationship . But how often do we hear the nitty-gritty of how we can actually better understand our deepest desires and most embarrassing questions? Bustle has enlisted Vanessa Marin, a sex therapist , to help us out with the details. No gender, sexual orientation, or question is off-limits, and all questions remain anonymous. Now, onto today’s topic: the best sex positions for guys who are on the smaller side.
Q: My partner isn’t the most well-endowed guy. I’m looking for sex positions that would work for someone with a smaller penis. Sometimes he’ll slip out, and other times I just can’t feel much.
I would also love some tips for how to suggest these positions without saying they’re specifically for small guys! I know he’s aware of the fact that he’s on the small side, but I don’t want to hurt his feelings.
A: Thanks for the question! There are an infinite number of sex positions , so you can definitely find some that are better suited to the combination of you and your partner’s bodies. In general, what works best for men who are on the smaller side are positions that allow him to penetrate as deeply as possible. If you’re not feeling much on your end, you also want to try out positions where you can keep your legs close together. This will help create a tighter fit and more sensation.
When it comes to making these suggestions, I think it’s best to bring them up in the context of trying new things in the bedroom, rather than trying to address the issue of him being small. Size is an extremely sensitive subject for most men , so it’s best to be as delicate as you can. If you show him this article, he’ll know you’re specifically recommending the position because he’s small. Instead, I’d recommend looking at the graphics and descriptions of the positions below, then trying to find pictures of similar positions using Google image search. Tell him that you saw this position in a movie, or a girlfriend recommended it.
How to do it: Lie down on your bed or a table, and have him approach you while standing. His crotch should be a little higher than yours (you’ll have to find a piece of furniture that’s the right height for this one). Have him crouch down and penetrate you. Slowly lift your legs up, one at a time, and rest your ankles on his shoulders. Your hips should move up a few inches into the air. He can help support you by cupping your butt or hips. For an even tighter fit, he can grab both of your ankles in his hand. You can use pillows under your hips to help get at a better angle for your bodies.
Why it works: This position creates really deep stimulation that will feel great for both of you. It’s an acrobatic, adventurous position, and won’t make either of you feel like anything’s lacking!
How to do it: This is a variation of Butterfly that’s worth it’s own description! Lay back on a table or bed, but this time, you want your pelvises to be at about the same height. Have him penetrate you, then raise your legs up in the air. Cross your legs at the ankles and rest your feet against his chest. He can get some leverage by holding onto your shins.
Why it works: Crossing your legs makes for an incredibly tight fit. Having your pelvises at the same height maximizes the depth. This one is a real winner!
How to do it: You’re probably familiar with this old standby! Get on your hands and knees, and have him enter you from behind while he kneels. In traditional doggy style , the man’s legs are usually in between the woman’s. The best variation for guys who are a little smaller is to have the woman hold her legs together and have the man spread his legs further apart, resting outside of hers. This creates an even tighter fit.
Why it works: Doggy style is a great position, regardless of penis size. Your bodies are angled nicely for him to hit your G-spot . This area is much closer to the vaginal opening than most people think, so shallow penetration can actually feel just as good as deep penetration.

How to do it: Lie on your back. Have your partner kneel in front of you, straddling one of your outstretched legs. Take the other leg and lift it up into the air, resting it on his chest or shoulder.
Why it works: This position allows him to get in nice and deep . Being on his knees give him good control, so he can make the most out of each thrust.
How to do it: Lie on your back, and have your partner kneel in front of you. Have him enter you, then hold on to your hips as you lift your legs up to rest on his shoulders. From there, he can lean over and rest his weight on his hands, bending your legs backwards towards your head.
You’ll want to communicate about how much flexibility you have! If your legs can’t bend back that far or you’re feeling too much pressure on your lower back, have him stay on his knees. For a different angle of penetration, try bending your legs and resting your feet on his chest.
Why it works: Your bodies are lined up nicely for deep penetration . The added pressure of his weight bearing down into you can make you feel that more filled-up, engulfed feeling that you’re looking for.
How to do it: Both of you get on your knees, with him behind you (having some pillows under your knees helps if you don’t have carpet). Drape your body over the edge of a sofa, so you’re bent at the hips. He can keep his torso upright, or bend over a bit with you. This can be a fun position to try in other areas of your house, like on a staircase or against a bed.
Why it works: Rear entry is always great for maximizing penetration, and this more upright position doesn’t disappoint. In this position, your bodies will be pressed up against each other’s, and he can easily reach down to stroke your clitoris. Always a plus.
