It may come as a shocker to most people because it is usually men who are touted as sex enjoyers in our country. But this is not about indulging in sex for pleasure. This is about a much more critical issue at hand, that of child marriage. A study by the National Family Health Survey revealed sex trends in our country and why women in India are facing the trouble of early, likely with a passive role, sex!
SEX BEFORE 15 YEARS: As per the study, 10 per cent of women in the age group of 25 to 49 revealed that they had had sex even before they turned 15! 38 per cent women of the same age group had had it before they turned 18!
MEDIAN AGE OF FIRST SEXUAL ENCOUNTER IN WOMEN: As per the study which collected data using a Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing technique, the median age at which women of the age group 25 to 49 had their first sexual encounter in the country is 19.1.
AVERAGE AGE OF FIRST SEXUAL ENCOUNTER IN MEN: In men, the average age for the men of same age group ups directly to 24.3 years! Only a single per cent of these men had had sex before the age of 15 and a mere 7 per cent by the age of 18.
IS THE DATA ABOUT PREMARITAL SEX OR MARITAL SEX? Though most of you must have predicted this by now but the higher numbers at lower ages in women is a result of child marriage in India and not premarital sex. Of the 19.1 per cent women who had had sex before 15, only 0.1 per cent were unmarried.
PREMARITAL SEX IN MEN VS WOMEN: When the study looked at the numbers for premarital sex in both the genders, only 11 per cent men acknowledged doing so while merely 2 per cent women did so.
WHAT ABOUT URBAN WOMEN? Indian urban women are much better off as compared to their rural counterparts. Their age of first sexual encounter is 20.3 years while for rural women, it is 18.6 years.
EDUCATION FACTOR: Also, women who had received education for 12 or more years married much later than those who had not. The median age for marriage for educated women is 22.7 years, while for rural women, it is 17.2 years.

In a survey out today 6% of teenage girls admit to having sex before the age of 12.
Two-thirds of sexually active under 18-year-olds lost their virginity before the age of 16.
And 40% of the young respondents said they were less than 12 years old when they first kissed a boy.
Teen magazine Sugar surveyed 1,770 girls between the ages of 12 and 18 and found that 15% admitted to having sex.
Seven per cent admitted to having had sex with “10 or more” boys and 18% said they first had sex with a boy who was not a boyfriend.
Last week it was revealed that 13-year-old Alfie Patten had fathered a baby girl. He was just 12 when he and 15-year-old Chantelle Steadman conceived baby Maisie.
Despite the risks it seems some parents adopt a relaxed attitude to their daughters’ relationships.
The survey found that 11% of girls were allowed to have boys stay the night in their bedroom. Another 34% could take boys into the bedroom and close the door and 27% had boys to stay overnight in a separate room.
Only 16% are banned from having boys in their bedroom at all.
Parents might struggle to get to know their daughters’ boyfriends as 54% of teenage girls said they would never let them meet a boyfriend and 21% would not admit to having one.
Only 11% of parents insist on meeting the boys their children date.
One teenage respondent said: “Cause my parents are so horrifically embarrassing, I would never live it down, I mention a boy’s name and all I hear is ‘Lauren’s got a boyfriend’ it’s so stupid.”
Girls admitted to feeling under pressure to have sex and 47% said that the pressure comes from their peers.
Those who do have sex found that it did not make them happy. Twenty two per cent said they felt “ashamed”, 21% felt “used” and 26% admitted to feeling “worried”.
One respondent said: “I was pressured into it by other people at school, lots of people at my school have done it before, and it wasn’t a very good time. We have been on/off for a year and we weren’t together when we did it and I thought it would make him like me more and stop messing me around, but afterward he stopped talking to me and now we hardly talk anymore.
“I was also worried that my parents would find out, because I was stupid to do it so young and I know if they find out they will be really disappointed in me, and they would go mad. I wish I had waited.”
Editor Annabel Brog, said: “Schools, the Government, media and parents all need to take responsibility for ensuring teenagers get clear mental, emotional and physical boundaries about what is and isn’t acceptable when it comes to dating and sex.
“Sugar is constantly endeavouring to raise levels of self respect among teenage girls so that they have the confidence and courage to say ‘no’.

In the 1970s, pimps and prostitutes haunted Times Square and drug dealers worked openly.
Back in the bad old days, New York City was at a low point, rife with crime-filled subways and suffering from an economic collapse.
In a new photo series, photographer Stephen Shames , captured daunting images of underage prostitutes in Times Square in the late 1970s.
Originally the heart of New York's night life, Broadway shows and grandiose movie theaters, Times Square's decline began in the 1960s and reached its peak in the late 1980s when prostitution and sex shops dominated the landscape.

Boy prostitutes were often referred to as 'chickens' while older men who paid for sex with young boys were referred to as the 'chicken hawks'.
The boys were called street hustlers, which meant that they were drifters who possibly supported their families through prostitution, according to the book titled Runaway Kids and Prostitution .
And the majority of male juvenile prostitutes were runaways or children who were thrown out of their homes.
Around the same time, more than 820,00 people fled the crime and an unreliable transit system over the course of the decade, moving from the city to the suburbs.
New York City went nearly bankrupt as Wall Street sputtered under the economic stagnation of the era.
Buildings went vacant and became home to squatters as they fell into disrepair.
The subway became unreliable and dangerous. Muggings and rapes were reported on trains and in the dark tunnels underground.
But in the 90s major companies such as Disney and Starbucks among others began to arrive. These companies built office towers or opened mega stores turning Times Square into a major commercial intersection.
