Temple University has a reputation for being the most sexually active college campus in the country, but the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection is becoming more likely as transmission rates increase nationally and locally.
Philadelphia has the fourth highest STI transmission rates in the United States as of the beginning of this year. STI rates are also rising nationwide, including a 26 percent increase in syphilis, a potential result of increased sexual activity after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, CBS News reported .
One in four college students has an STI and they are particularly at risk of transmitting and receiving an STI, according to HealthNewsHub. College-age students are more sexually active and may be less experienced with using protection while having sex, said Thomas Trojian, assistant clinical director for student health operations at Student Health Services.
Chlamydia, herpes and HPV are the three most common STIs among Temple’s student body, according to Student Health Services.
As STI rates reach heights unseen in decades in the U.S. due to COVID-19 restrictions being lifted, it’s important for sexually active students to communicate with their partners about using protection and testing regularly for STIs to help prevent transmission. Normalizing these conversations can encourage safe sex practices and reduce the stigma that considers someone, with an STI or who has tested for an STI, to be “unclean” or “impure.”
Temple students can register for STI testing on the Patient Health Portal as a precautionary measure or if they know they’ve been exposed.
Students do not need health insurance to receive an STI test at Student Health Services. All testing is available on a sliding scale, meaning if a student doesn’t have insurance, Student Health will charge based on the person’s income, said Michelle Scarpulla, a social and behavioral sciences professor and former employee of Answer, a national organization that provides sexual education.
Organizations near Main Campus like the Mazzoni Center, an LGBTQ-focused health and wellness establishment, offer STI and HIV testing at 1348 Bainbridge Street. Planned Parenthood also offers STI testing at the Elizabeth Blackwell Health Center at 1144 Locust Street. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation also has an STI testing location at 1211 Chestnut Street, Suite 405.
“If you’re having multiple sexual partners, especially something on a college campus, that’s your moral responsibility to tell other kids if you have symptoms,” said Liana Hoffman, a junior health professions major.
However, many STIs appear asymptomatic. If someone rarely engages in sexual activity or has sex once or twice a year, they should test annually, while people with multiple partners should test as often as possible. New couples should get tested before having unprotected sex, according to the National Coalition for Sexual Health.
“Someone can have one of the sexually transmitted infections, and not know it,” Scarpulla said. “They can be passing it on to others, and meanwhile it can be doing harm to their own body.”
Although some Temple students may use a form of birth control to help prevent pregnancy, most contraceptives do not stop the spread of STIs. Condoms are the only contraceptive that can assist in reducing the risk of both pregnancy and infection.
Free condoms are available at Temple’s Wellness Resource Center, Student Health Services and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health wellness centers located at1930 South Broad Street and 1900 North 20th Street.
Condoms are more than 90 percent effective in preventing STIs, yet only 62 percent of college students usually or always use condoms, according to CollegeStats, a database of college-related research.
However, condoms are not 100 percent effective at preventing the spread of STIs, so every sexual experience could pose risk of transmission. To practice lower-risk safe sex, students should have open, nonjudgmental conversations about sexual health with their partner and ask when their last STI test was, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It’s better to discuss sexual health in a neutral location that isn’t the bedroom where both parties feel comfortable and are unable to be interrupted, Scarpulla said. Students should have these conversations before they get intimate in the bedroom.
“Honest health communication is the best that we can do,” said Anne Frankel, a social and behavioral sciences professor. “The only way we’re going to de-stigmatize this issue is by discussing it.”
Having an active sex life in college is normal, but students must have honest and open conversations with a partner prior to sex. If anyone is sexually active, it is important to utilize risk reduction strategies like frequent testing and using protection.
“If you say yes to sex, say yes to testing,” Trojian said.

One of Marjorie Taylor Greene 's former lovers is offering tantric sex retreats and 'ecstatic cuddle' classes at his commune in Washington State, DailyMail.com can exclusively reveal.
Craig Ivey, 44, was dubbed the 'polyamorous tantric sex guru' when DailyMail.com exclusively exposed his affair with the QAnon supporting congresswoman last year.
He was one of two men who the now-congresswoman enjoyed extramarital flings with in 2012 after meeting them at her gym in Alpharetta, Georgia .
Ivey's classes have started just as his former lover is sued for divorce by Perry Greene, her husband of 27 years.
Ivey advertises the workshops – which are hosted at the $955,000 'dome home' he shares with domestic partner Katie Kovacich, two other women, and a male friend – via his Facebook page.

The first, which was called 'Awakening Love: A Luminous Experience,' took place 10 days ago and invited participants to 'embody bliss, sensuality and open hearts'.
According to Ivey, the three-day workshop involved 'integrating classical tantra, neo tantra, sacred sexuality and spirituality'.
He added: 'This unique container is designed to progressively deepen intimacy and conscious connection within ourselves and others in ways that enliven our hearts and transform our lives.'
Musclebound Ivey is also using the property to run his X-rated OnlyFans page which includes multiple shots of him naked in nature and a 'sex positive' Facebook group called 'the Kaleidoscopic Community' which offers a variety of activities, including tantric dance classes and nature rambles that include naked swimming sessions.
Medical News Today defines tantric sex as a 'slow, meditative form of sex where the end goal is not orgasm but enjoying the sexual journey and sensations of the body.'
Upcoming events include 'Ecstatic Dance and Cuddles' on October 16 and a 'Where The Wild Things Are Halloween Party' on October 29.
For extra income, the 44-year-old hosts paying guests at a $130-a-night Mongolian 'soul yurt' that he built on his 40-acre property.
Now listed on Airbnb, it boasts a cedar hot tub and comes with access to the 'community spaces' in his dome home.
Ivey first made headlines in 2021 after DailyMail.com revealed he had a steamy affair with mom-of-three Taylor Greene, now 48, in 2012.
She also had an affair with gym manager Justin Tway, 44, around the same time.
At the time she had filed for divorce, demanding shared custody of their children and half of their assets, but the couple reconciled.
But in September that year, the divorce was abruptly called off.

Despite noting he is 'back in the news' on his Twitter page after Taylor Greene's divorce was reported, Ivey declined to comment when approached by DailyMail.com during a visit to a local branch of Costco where he was seen purchasing a car battery.
He was wearing gold lamé leggings and a neon yellow tank top accessorized with a fanny pack for the outing, and was also seen treating himself to a pizza and was joined for dinner by one of his female roommates, fitness devotee Leilani York.
He has previously discussed his fling with Taylor Greene on his social media accounts where he posts photographs of himself in varying states of undress and goes by the username, 'the_tantric_warrior'.
In February 2021, shortly after DailyMail.com revealed his affair with Taylor Greene, he said he was proud to be polyamorous and knew Taylor Greene was 'a kind spirit that wanted to help people through building community and reaching health goals.'
He added: 'There was never discussion of politics,' he said.
'It does sadden me to see the type of person she has chosen to become,' he added.
'I feel like I knew her at her best and unfortunately she has drifted far from that life. I still wish her the best.'
Following his own split from Taylor Greene, Ivey moved to Seattle, where he worked at a series of cross-fit gyms as a trainer while living in a battered trailer parked outside York's former home in Renton.
Along with York, Kovacich, relationship counselor Gwendolyn Brown, and IT manager Paul Youngberg, Ivey now lives in a communal property – dubbed the 'Geoclectic Grove' by its occupants.
When not hosting tantric sex classes, Ivey takes part in – and teaches – medieval combat which involves sword fighting while dressed in a suit of armor.
According to his Facebook page, he also enjoys attending Middle Ages-themed Renaissance Faires and recently attended one dressed in a maroon and beige tabard.

Perry Greene filed for divorce last week, more than 10 years after the couple had reconciled.
They two met when they were students at the University of Georgia and have have two daughters, aged 23 and 25, and a son, 19.
Although the divorce documents do not reveal explicitly what led to the couple's split, Perry Greene states that the pair had separated in the past.
Just as she had asked in 2012, Perry asked the court to split their assets equally.
He asked that the remainder of the divorce proceeding be filed under seal, because divorce proceedings are public in Georgia, and a gag order be placed on the case, 'restraining parties, attorneys, witnesses, and court personnel from releasing information to the public concerning the proceedings relating to the above styled action,' court records say.
Greene's lawyer, Allen Harris wrote that he ‘expects there will be certain pleadings, affidavits, and other documents filed in this case such that the record will contain sensitive personal and financial information, the public disclosure of which would negatively impact the parties' privacy interests.'
He asked that the judge seal the records for at least the next 25 years.
On Monday, however, Greene seemed to have a change of heart regarding the secrecy surrounding the records because he withdrew the request without explanation ahead of a 4pm hearing on the matter.
Neither Taylor Greene nor her husband have been living in either of their Alpharetta or Rome homes in Georgia since the divorce was filed.
Taylor Greene issued a statement about the split.
'Marriage is a wonderful thing and I'm a firm believer in it. Our society is formed by a husband and wife creating a family to nurture and protect,' she said.
'Together, Perry and I formed our family and raised three great kids. He gave me the best job title you can ever earn: Mom. I'll always be grateful for how great of a dad he is to our children.'

The petition to file for divorce came a little over a month before the midterm election - in which she is standing.
It is now not clear where Taylor Greene is living.
At her white house in Rome, Georgia, where she moved to establish residency in the state's 14th Congressional District, garbage cans at the end of the driveway were not moved for a week and packages remained on the front porch.
In Alpharetta, about an hour and a half away, where her husband still runs the construction company, Taylor Commercial, founded by her father, one of her daughters made it known that they did not want to discuss the dissolution of the marriage.
The congresswoman's angry spokesman later called DailyMail.com and yelled: 'You work for an immature publication that writes about communism.'
