Shower sex is the stuff that Hollywood love-making magic is made of. In real life, though, it's more complicated than you might think — meaning, no showing off your yoga moves to your partner in the shower because we don't want you to end up in the ER . When it comes to sex acts and positions, shower sex proves that there's more to sex than just penetration. For example, you're unlikely to slip if you're on your knees , and since you're already in the shower it's super easy to get clean when you're done.
You'll have to think about barriers and not just condoms and dental dams , but also things like nonslip shower mats that can help ensure you have a much safer time while getting it on. Additionally, there are lubes that can help to make penetrative shower sex more enjoyable. That's just the beginning of what's good about shower sex — when you know how to do it right, it can be really amazing. Allure spoke to sex experts about the safest and steamiest (horrible pun intended) ways to have shower sex.
Those with nicer showers simply have an unfair advantage in the shower sex game, at least when it comes to space and positions. (Sigh — the one percent wins yet again.) If your shower has room for a chair, a bench, or has railings to hold onto, you're far more likely to enjoy shower sex, as you have an array of seated positions available, such as cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, and seated oral sex .
To prevent a potentially painful spill, somatic psychologist and certified sex therapist Holly Richmond encourages using a railing to hold onto if you're going to be lifting legs up or trying any positions that require balance. "People get really injured from slipping and falling," says Richmond. "A mat or some kind of rail to hold onto is always helpful." While installing a rail is more time-consuming, you can grab a nonslip mat from Amazon for $10 .
However, that doesn't mean that those of us with small showers can't have a great time, too. The safest standing position in the shower is from behind, as you can leave both legs planted. "Unless you have safety rails installed, keep both feet on the ground if you're using a standing position," says sexologist Timaree Schmit .
And who says there needs to be any penetration involved? Oral shower sex can be super hot, too, not to mention a little simpler for the accident-prone. (Just be careful that you don't choke on shower water.) There's also nipple pinching, neck kisses, shoulder massages , and any other fun you can imagine.
While shower sex using condoms isn't impossible, it's not always the easiest — or the most fool-proof. "Have condoms or other barriers readily accessible, but be mindful that oil-based products degrade latex so consider what other soaps and lotions are on your hands," explains Schmit. If you're in a fluid-bonded relationship (meaning you have both been tested and have agreed to have sex sans condoms), shower sex comes with less stress.
Someone once told me in high school that you could have sex in the water and not get pregnant because the water would wash all the sperm away. Seriously. If you have heard any such rumor, don't believe it; it's dangerous fake news. "Don’t think because you’re submerged in water and you’re getting washed off that you can’t get pregnant or get an STI ; you absolutely can get those," says Richmond. If you're not in a fluid-bonded relationship and feel apprehensive about the reliability of condoms in the shower, you can always move things to the bedroom after enjoying some bath-centric foreplay.
Lube is a wonderful (and incredibly helpful ) thing to have on hand for just about any type of sexual encounter, but there are some best practices to keep in mind if you're planning to use it during shower play.
You'll still need lube , though, since water not only washes away water, it also washes away your natural vaginal lubricant."Water-based lubes will be effectively useless, so go with silicone-based," advises Schmit.
If you're having anal sex , here's your friendly reminder that the rectum doesn't self-lubricate, so you should always slather it up in and out of the shower. Pjur Back Door Silicone Lubricant is long-lasting enough to earn its reputation for anal sex, but you can use it for any form of penetration. Sliquid Sassy is also a great silicone lube option.
Despite their help in the shower, silicone lubes have a few setbacks. They should not be used with silicone toys because silicone can break itself down, so if you're using any waterproof silicone sex toys in the shower, try a thicker water-based lube, such as Sliquid H20 instead.
It's also worth mentioning that another fantastic option is having sex with yourself using your hands or a waterproof sex toy. They even make dildos with suction cups (like these from LoveHoney ) for solo sex in the shower. Masturbation is sex , and shower masturbation rules. Bounce on.

Things can be as steamy as "Fifty Shades of Grey."
If there’s one thing pop culture has painted a not-so-accurate picture of, it’s sex . Many television shows and movies would have you believe that sex is always steamy and orgasm-inducing . Especially when it comes to shower sex. Pop culture would have you believe that shower sex positions are easy to pull off, and that it’s even a good idea to get a little extra steamy in the shower.
But you soon realize just how challenging it can be to find the right positions to pull of shower sex without slipping and sliding around. That shouldn’t, however, keep you from trying. Because when done right — and when expectations are realistic — shower sex can be quite enjoyable.
So before you hop in the shower, take a look at some of the following sex positions from sex experts who know the best ways to get it on before you get clean.
A seated sex position works in the shower or tub, according to Jess O'Reilly, PhD , a sexologist and relationship expert based in Toronto. “One partner sits on the floor and the other sits on their lap, both facing in the same direction,” she says. “The top partner controls the speed, depth and rhythm. You can try this one beneath the stream of shower water, or on the other side of it.”
For the Tall X position, O’Reilly suggests one partner stands facing the wall and opens their arms and legs to form a large X. “The other partner approaches from behind,” she says. “Be sure to be careful to ensure you don’t slip in the tub.” Having trouble with foot grip? Grab a shower mat to pull off standing positions.
For a variation of the standing position, Sunny Rodgers , a clinical sexologist and certified sex educator, recommends having one partner bend over at the waist and hold onto the seat of a shower, if it’s there. You can let the water run over you, as well. “This position allows for wonderful stimulation options , with the [other partner] enjoying hands-free freedom,” she says, adding that the standing partner can stimulate a woman's breasts or clitoris.
Oral can be excellent for shower sex with the natural lubrication from your mouth. “One partner sits on the edge of the tub [or on the shower seat], and the other kneels at their feet to perform oral ,” says O’Reilly.
Get up close and personal with your partner for this next position. “A great option is to have the man lift his partner’s leg up for easier entry,” says Rodgers. “This means only three feet on the shower floor, but this position allows partners to be face-to-face so both can appreciate each other’s pleasure.” Your man can lean against the shower wall for more support, or you can rest your foot on the shower ledge if available.
If you’re struggling to maintain your footing, have just one partner stand under the water to start. “One partner stands in the shower or tub, and the other stands facing them on dry ground outside to maintain balance,” says O’Reilly. “The partner in the shower lifts one leg to place a foot on the tub if you have one.” You can also easily perform oral from this position , before you both hop on the shower together.
Rodgers says to try, test, and tinker with new shower sex positions. “Shower sex play is great for exploring the body and making a fun mess, with little clean up,” she says. “The shower can also mask sounds so it’s great for noisy sex play, as well.” With a little prep work, you can maximize the amount of doable positions. In addition to getting a shower mat for the floor, try “ a pleasure product with suction cups , which will adhere to the shower wall and can be used to increase stability,” Rodgers recommends.

And a few tips for making it less...uncomf.
If you've ever had shower sex that made you feel like a wet chihuahua—shivering, uncomfortable, awk AF—you're not alone. Getting dirty in the place that gets you clean is far more complicated than any rom-com (side-eyeing you, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days , Friends With Benefits ) or porno suggests.
For one, it's slip central (tile + water + bouncing bodies = you better have health insurance). Two, water is not (I repeat, NOT) a lubricant—in fact, it can actually make you feel more dry than wet (I know, the irony). And last but not least, there is absolutely nothing sexy about accidentally taking a gulp of hot water up your nose or in your mouth when you're trying to get your O on.
But before you cross shower sex off your sex bucket list for good, you may want to give it another go. "Shower sex can be really hot because it has a sense of urgency to it—you're not going to stay in there for an hour," says Janet Brito, PhD, a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist in Honolulu, Hawaii. "Plus, hot water is relaxing and sensual, and seeing each other naked and wet can be a huge turn-on."
Shower sex may be the one time parents have enough privacy to indulge in a quickie sesh, Brito explains. If you've got kiddos constantly running around or if you're living with roommates, parents, etc., hopping in the shower might be the only time you can fit in your interruption-free, one-on-one time with bae.
Ready for some steamy shower sex? These tips will make shower sex hotter—and safer:
Now that you know how to have hot shower sex, here are the best shower sex positions to tackle tonight (and tomorrow morning, and the next...):
This position gives you tons of G-spot and clitoral stimulation, so you can get in and out of the shower (read: reach orgasm) fast. You can either place your hands onto the shower wall for support—or if your partner has good traction (that grippy bath mat, people!), let them grip your wrists to up the ante.
Do It: With both your and your partner’s feet planted firmly on the mat, turn away from your companion and lean into the wall, pressing your palms against it and tilting your butt upward and out. Your partner should enter you from behind, thrusting with their hands anchored on your hips, breasts, clit, whatever. Option to remove your hands once you find your balance (it's just like yoga).
Amp it up with one of these buzzy waterproof vibrators .
Are you lucky/fancy enough to have one of those seat-shelves in your shower? If not, did you take my advice and buy one yet? You need to: This seated rear-entry position is the perfect shower choice if you like girl-on-top .
Do It: Have your partner sit on the bench with feet on the floor. Facing away from them, sit on their lap, straddling them (you choose how wide to spread your legs based on your stability). As you pump up and down, your hands will be free to play with your clit or any other erogenous zones. You can even have your partner hold your wrists so you can lean forward and go at it at an angle. Fun!
Here’s another position that'll help you make good use of that shower seat.
Do It: With your partner sitting down, straddle them, facing forward with your knees and/or shins on the bench for leverage. Grind against your partner, bracing the wall for balance if need be.The pressure of his pubic bone against your clitoris should feel pretty darn stimulating—but if your knees or legs start to hurt, try pretzeling them behind your partner's back.
This position might also be easiest with a shower shelf seat, but that’s not completely necessary. That said, you may not want to start with this position—think of it more like your finale.
Do It: With your back pressed against the wall, have your partner enter you from the front: You can wrap both your legs around their waist, or if that’s too slippery in the shower, try dropping one foot to the floor and leaving one lifted.
When in doubt, lying down and bracing yourself against a surface is a safe strategy for shower sex. You have to have a thicker-rimmed shower/bathtub situation for this position to work, but you could also bring in a temporary bench. Do It: Rest on your hip and forearm on one side of the tub, shower shelf, or bench, and press your thighs together. Have your partner stand behind you and enter, keeping your legs closed for a tighter hold as he thrusts.
For another fun front-facing position (that requires a little less balance on your partner's end), this is a great option.
Do It: With your partner standing and positioned to enter you from the front, bring one leg up to brace against the edge of the tub or your shower wall for extra support and thrusting leverage.
The change in angle adds a stimulating twist to a shower standard, and the added sensation of warm water on your back definitely doesn’t hurt.
So this move might look a little blah, but trust—it isn't. You get some deep P-in-the-V action (go ahead and touch your clit, or have him reach one hand around to do it himself), he gets to rest (a bit), and you both get a break from all the weird wet kissing. Because let's be honest...warm water never tastes good (nope, not even during sex).
Do It: Have your partner sit on the edge of the tub or your handy bench, then sit on top of him, facing away. Simple!
No one in their right mind would tell you to have sex lying down in the shower (hello, drowning?). But there's no reason you can't have sex sitting down, on the shower floor. In fact, there's every reason TO go for it: You can't fall if you're already on flat ground.
Do It: Position the shower head so that it will hit your bodies (not faces), then have your partner sit on the shower floor, hands behind him to prop him up. Then sit in front of him and scooch your hips until you're sitting on top of him.
Note: You'll be the one doing most of the riding (and pro tip: circular grinding) here, since his tush hitting the hard tile over and over won't feel so good.
One thing that makes shower sex (and standing sex in general, tbh) harder? A big height difference. So to make up for any gaps, this should be your go-to.
Do It: Prop yourself onto the tub ledge or bench and have your partner enter you while you hold onto the closest surface. If you're completely stable, place your feet on his chest, in front of his shoulders, to better control his tempo and depth of thrusts.
If you're feeling a little more ambitious (and #WHstrong), consider the wheelbarrow position. Word of caution, though: You definitely want that non-slip bath mat and to point the water away from your head. (So you can breathe...okay, pant.)
Do It: Get on your hands and feet, and have your partner pick you up by the pelvis. Then, wrap your thighs around their waist for support as your partner thrusts. This position allows for some super-deep penetration, and the warm water hitting your body at the same time will feel ah-mazing.
Another way to tackle the shower is by trying out new ways to give oral, or as Brito calls it, the ‘bullseye.’ (Get it? The clitoris is the bullseye
