Prostitution activities seems to be thriving in the twin-city, as several sex rackets have been exposed one after the another. The anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) of the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police busted yet another high-profile prostitution racket and arrested a 53-year-old woman in Mira Road on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off about immoral trafficking of women in the Twin Cities, a team led by ASI-Umesh Patil, under the supervision of Police Inspector-Devidas Handore, established contact with the woman (name withheld) through a decoy customer.
It came to light that the accused woman used social messaging platforms, including the WhatsApp application, to communicate with potential clients by sharing photographs of women she had to offer for the rendezvous. After striking a deal of Rs 20,000 for a woman, the decoy informed the police team, following which a trap was laid near the Shivar Garden area in Mira Road and the pimp was apprehended as she arrived there in an auto-rickshaw.
Three women were also rescued from the clutches of the fresh trade racketeers. Investigations revealed that the rescued women who earlier worked in event management and catering firms were lured and also forced into flesh trade.
A case under section 370 of the IPC and relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) has been registered against the woman who has been remanded in custody. The rescued women have been shifted to a rehabilitation centre.
Further investigations were underway to find the lodges that were encouraging the pimps by facilitating space for their illegal activities.

Some gardai sought sexual services from sex workers, a new study has revealed.
The report, published by the University of Limerick, reveals that the sex workers have faced discriminatory behaviour at the hands of gardai.
The report, which was launched on Thursday, found that one in five street sex workers interviewed had experience of being sexually exploited by the gardai.
The research reveals that the 2017 Criminal Law Act has ‘drastically affected’ the lives of street sex workers in urban areas.
The findings are based on interviews with a sample of 25 street sex workers, with 15 based in Dublin and 10 in Limerick.
The report found a deep mistrust by sex workers of An Garda Siochana .
It found that sex workers who face rape, violence, or other crimes felt discouraged to report such incidents to Gardai for a range of reasons.
It cited a history of trauma inflicted by ‘aggressive Garda tactics’, as well as the belief and experience of some officers ‘sexually exploiting’ street sex workers and “abusing their power”.
They also said there is a widespread stigma around sex work in the Irish society, and sex workers are afraid of publicity.
The report also found that around one in five sex workers have experienced incidents of officers manipulating a lack of knowledge of their legal rights.
This includes threatening to charge workers with prostitution, despite outdoor sex work being decriminalised in 2017.
The report found that the 2017 Act, which purportedly aimed to prevent the exploitation and sex trafficking of vulnerable people, has drastically marginalised already vulnerable populations and has made the lives of street sex workers in urban areas even harder.
The report, ‘I Must Be Some Person: Accounts From Street Sex Workers In Ireland’, investigated street workers’ knowledge and experience of the legislation around sex work since the introduction of the 2017 Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act.
The work was a collaboration between the University of Limerick and Gender, Orientation, Sexual Health, HIV (GOSHH).
The report also makes recommendations for the Department of Justice, which is currently engaged in a review of the 2017 Act, regarding the law and policy around sex work.
It calls for the full decriminalisation of sex work, including the purchase of sexual services, a clear distinction between sex work versus sexual exploitation and sex trafficking and a strengthening of services for sex workers to ensure they have safe working conditions.
It also recommends an end to the policing of sex workers by An Garda Siochana.
Dr Anca Minescu, author of the report and lecturer in psychology at the University of Limerick , said: ‘Our findings show our current law on sex work negatively affects lives, safety, and wellbeing of sex workers.
‘Portraying all sex workers in Ireland as “exploited victims” and the way the gardai are interacting with the street sex workers contribute to violence and stigmatisation.
‘This enables very serious incidents of Garda misconduct against sex workers, including sexual assault and verbal abuse, and false legal information surrounding sex work spread by others.
‘This also leads to further marginalisation and isolation of an already economically and psychologically vulnerable population.’ With additional reporting by PA
