Sex Education fans have been waiting over a year for the third installment to land on Netflix. The wait has been extra intense following the huge cliffhanger at the end of season 2, where Otis (played by Asa Butterfield) finally came clean about his feelings for Maeve (Emma Mackey). Newsweek has everything you need to know about the new series.
There is good news for fans of Netflix's Sex Education.
After more than one year of waiting, Sex Education season 3 finally has a release date.
The brand new series will premiere on Friday, September 17 on Netflix worldwide.
Many members of the show's cast took to social media to share the news.
For example, Gillian Anderson posted a photograph of an interestingly shaped pepper with the hashtag #penisoftheday.
She wrote: "Two for the price of one. #penisoftheday (see you 17 Sept @sexeducation!)"
Aimee Lou Wood posted a picture of her and Sex Education co-star, Emma Mackey, with the caption: "September 17th. Get yer blazers on, change is coming."
All eight episodes will drop at once on the streaming platform, for Sex Education fans to watch in one go.
You can also watch episodes of Sex Education on the go via the Netflix app.
To watch Sex Education , you can subscribe to Netflix now for $8.99 per month.
Sex Education fans hearts broke across the world watching the finale of Sex Education season 2.
After an entire season of will-they-won't-they, Otis finally admitted his true feelings for Maeve.
He left her an emotional voicemail, telling Maeve he was sorry and he was in love with her.
But Maeve never received the voicemail as Isaac (George Robinson) deleted the message from her phone while she was asleep.
When Otis turned up at Maeve's caravan to talk to her, Isaac also turned him away. Maeve was totally unaware of Isaac's actions and no doubt season 3 will begin with Otis questioning why Maeve never responded to his message.
Elsewhere, Otis' mom Jean (Gillian Anderson) found out she was pregnant, but who the father of the baby is remains unclear for now.
Mr. Groff (Alistair Petrie) was also placed on leave by the school administrator, so the students at Moordale can expect to see a new head of school in season 3.
The entire main cast is back for the third season of Sex Education.
This means Asa Butterfield is back as the often insecure Otis Milburn and the iconic Gillian Anderson as his mother, Dr. Jean Milburn.
Emma Mackey is back as Maeve Wiley, a social outcast who has unexpectedly strong feelings for Otis.
Ncuti Gatwa and Aimee Lou Wood are back as Eric Effiong, Otis' best friend, and Aimee Gibbs, Maeve's closest friend.
Connor Swindells returns as Adam Groff, the headmaster's son, and Eric's love interest.
Kedar Williams-Stirling will also be back on screen as Jackson Marchetti, Maeve's ex and the head boy of Moordale Secondary School.
Also returning is Patricia Allison as Ola, Otis's ex-girlfriend, and Tanya Reynolds as Lily Iglehart, Ola's new love interest.
Fans will also see the return of Mimi Keene as Ruby Matthews, Chaneil Kular as Anwar, Simone Ashley as Olivia Hanan, and Alistair Petrie as Michael Groff.
There are also some new faces joining the cast of Sex Education season 3.
Sudanese-American singer and actor Dua Saleh joins the cast as Cal, a non-binary student.
Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs joins the cast of Sex Education as Peter Groff alongside Girls star Jemima Kirke as headmistress Hope.
Yes, there is finally a trailer for Sex Education sea son three after months of waiting.
One thing is for sure, it looks like there is going to be a lot of change at Moordale. There's a new head teacher, uniforms and what appears to be a strict sex education regime.
Thankfully, it also looks like there are plenty of happy endings on the cards, with the trailer featuring snippets of Maze and Otis content —good and bad.
In the meantime, you can watch the first two seasons of Sex Education on Netflix now.

Otis and the gang are set to return for a third series
Sex Education season two was only released in 2020, but fans immediately demanded Netflix commission a third. Over 40million subscribers on the streaming platform watched the hit show’s freshman effort, making it one of Netflix’s most successful original productions ever
Starring Hugo actor Asa Butterfield and living legend Gillian Anderson (!), Sex Education resonated with viewers thanks to its frank and hilarious take on sex and relationships. Colourful characters like the flamboyant Eric and the quirky Lily embodied the show’s humour and heart perfectly. The series, by its very nature, is a learning experience. From STD advice to bedroom tips, Otis and Maeve’s therapy clinic has seen it all; allowing the show’s young audience to learn about sex in the process. Sex … Education – get it?
Luckily, with two seasons already under her belt, creator Laurie Nunn has confirmed that she is already busy working on a third batch of episodes. Here’s everything we know so far about Sex Education season three (SPOILERS for Sex Education season two below)…
Netflix initially confirmed there will be a third season, revealing the news with a video of Alistair Petrie – aka Principal Groff – reminding fans where things stand with the characters.

Now, a number of first look images have been revealed which you can view below.
As for a release date, it has officially been confirmed that season 3 will drop on September 17, 2021 with eight new episodes.
The coronavirus pandemic originally halted production on series three with Deadline revealing in May 2020 that Netflix and Sex Education producer Eleven had set a hopeful target of August to get cameras rolling again. Eleven’s new parent company Sony Pictures Television later confirmed that formal production planning was underway.
There is no doubt Asa Butterfield will return as Otis Milburn; alongside his best friend Eric, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and ‘will-they-won’t-they’ love interest, Emma Mackey’s Maeve. Gillian Anderson’s fan favourite turn as Otis’ mum, Dr Jean Milburn, will return as well.
Most of the cast will also return for round three, including: Adam (Connor Swindells), Ola (Patricia Allison), Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling), Lily (Tanya Reynolds), Rahim (Sami Outalbali), Olivia (Simone Ashley), Ruby (Mimi Keene), Anwar (Chaneil Kular), Viv (Chinenye Ezeudu),Steve (Chris Jenks), Miss Sands (Rakhee Thakrar), Mr Hendricks (Jim Howick) Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt), Mr Groff (Alistair Petrie) and Maureen Groff (Samantha Spiro), among others.
However, a handful of new cast members have been confirmed. Jemima Kirke has joined Sex Education and will be playing the new headmistress at Moordale, named Hope.
Cal, a new student who clashes with Hope, will be played by Dua Saleh – and Jason Isaacs will also be joining the cast as Peter Groff, Mr Groff’s “more successful/less modest older brother,” according to Netflix. Indra Ové who plays Elsie’s foster mum Anna has also been confirmed for season three.

At the end of the Sex Education season two , there were breakups and makeups.
Ola left Otis for Lily, Eric left Rahim for Adam and Otis professed his love to Maeve over voicemail. It’s a shame that Issac – Maeve’s new pal who moves into the trailer park she resides in – deleted the message before she got to hear it, but guess what? Netflix loves a cliff-hanger and this one left viewers desperate to know what happens next.
In an interview with LadBible , Laurie Nunn talked about where she would like to take the kids from Moordale High in a third instalment. ‘‘I always feel that teen shows should maybe stop before university,” she said. “Otherwise, you get to the point where people are 30-years-old and they’re playing teenagers.”
Now a plot synopsis for season three has been revealed which states: “It’s a new year, Otis is having casual sex, Eric and Adam are official, and Jean has a baby on the way.
“Meanwhile, new headteacher Hope (played by Jemima Kirke) tries to return Moordale to a pillar of excellence, Aimee discovers feminism, Jackson gets a crush and a lost voicemail still looms. Prepare for commitment animals, alien phenomena, vulva cupcakes and much more of Madam Groff.”
Complicated love triangles? Stressful university applications? Sounds like there is plenty of drama left for Sex Education season three. Where can we enrol?

The Sex Education season 3 release date is confirmed for September 2021
Sex Education season 3 will release on Netflix on September 17, 2021 – now the show has a new trailer, heralding its return. This school-based British sitcom is one of our best Netflix shows yet, and fans have endured a long wait for this one.
Sex Education's cast is one of the reasons the show has taken off like it has. Season 1 kicked off with a great, funny hook: Otis (Asa Butterfield), the child of sex therapist Jean (Gillian Anderson), opened a sex-therapy clinic in his school with Maeve (Emma Mackey) – with numerous entertaining results. Across two seasons of episodes, Sex Education tackled sensitive issues delicately, demonstrating its seriously layered approach to characterization, and avoiding falling into the trappings of bawdy teen sex comedies.
Netflix confirmed Sex Education season 3 was on the way back in February 2020 – but unfortunately, that's when the pandemic held up the series' return. Back in September 2020, however, the cast and crew isolated so they could film the show, with one crew member stating that the series had wrapped filming by March 2021. Now, it's almost over.
On this page, you'll find everything we know about Sex Education season 3 so far, including its cast, the show's official release date and the brand new trailer.
Netflix has officially confirmed that Sex Education season 3's release date is 17 September, 2021 – close to two years since season 2 dropped on the service. Here are the first images Netflix has released for the show's return:

A new trailer has been released for Sex Education season 3 as its release creeps up on us. Among the highlights: Jemima Kirke's new, seemingly more conservative headteacher, Otis getting lucky and Eric's developing relationship with Adam. Even though it was filmed mid-pandemic, it looks like the same old show to us.

While a full cast list for season three is yet to be confirmed, Netflix announced some exciting new names to the Sex Education season 3 cast in September. Jason Isaac's Peter Groff should prove an excellent foil to his headteacher brother, with recording artist Dua Saleh as a returning student who clashes with the new headmistress, Hope, played by Jemima Kirke (Girls, Tiny Furniture) as previously mentioned.
Series headliners Asa Butterfield (Otis Milburn) and Gillian Anderson (Dr Jean Milburn) return this season, along with a sizeable chunk of the supporting cast including Emma Mackey (Maeve Wiley), Ncuti Gatwa (Eric Effiong), Connor Swindells (Adam Groff) and Patricia Allison (Ola Nyman).
Series creator and writer Laurie Nunn was already hard at work on the script for a third season well before Netflix renewed the show.
In an interview with LADbible (opens in new tab) , Nunn touches on the tight working schedule for the series, noting that the writing process of another season before confirmed renewal is a normal part of how TV production works. When asked about the potential for future stories, Nunn said, "I love writing these characters. It's such a big ensemble and I think the theme of the show – in terms of it being about sex and relationships – it really just offers up endless story opportunities."
Sex Education season 2 pivoted away from its focus on Otis and instead opted to lend almost equal time to the wonderfully diverse characters around him. The internet’s newest queer icon Eric (Gatwa) benefited the most from this shift in show structure, allowing for a nuanced and moving insight into the struggles of a young Black queer man. His popularity clearly hasn’t gone without notice, as the teaser video for the third season is largely focused on the potential of his blooming romance with his former bully Adam.
While remaining tight-lipped on the Sex Education season 3 story, Butterfield said to Digital Spy that he's "really happy" with the first episode and that "it didn't go where I anticipated it to. He added: "A few things have changed. I'm excited." We're also firmly with him when he says "I want more of Otis and Maeve." The will-they-won't-they relationship was frustratingly left Otis leaving a drunk love message on Maeve's answerphone, just as she seems to be falling for neighbour, Isaac.
Eric isn’t the only student with love on the brain, of course. The timeless 'will they, won’t they?' dance between Otis and Maeve (Mackey) seems set to come to a head. The somewhat divisive final scenes of season two saw Otis confess his love to Maeve in a voicemail, only for it to be deleted by Maeve’s new love interest before she could hear it.
While some fans have been critical of this story beat as an artificial extension of the character’s ongoing love dilemma, the show’s director shrugs off any potential backlash. In a chat with BT (opens in new tab) , Ben Taylor says "I think shoes will be thrown
