Sex Education makes the mistake of denying Lily and her relationship with Ola any development outside of her erotic obsession with aliens.
Many relationships are in turmoil in Sex Education season 3 but Lily and Ola’s romantic conflict stands out as a weak and underdeveloped story. Created by Laurie Nunn, Sex Education stars Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Gillian Anderson, and Ncuti Gatwa and follows the trials and tribulations of high schoolers as they navigate relationships and sex lives. The newest season of the British teen dramedy came out on Netflix the weekend of September 17th. It brings in several new characters, and as usual, the romantic drama between Moordale’s students takes center stage.
Sex Education season 3 sees a lot of changes in its main characters’ lives and relationships. Moordale Secondary School has a new headmaster, Hope Haddon, who proves old-fashioned and overbearing. Protagonist Otis Milburn has a tumultuous fling with popular mean girl Ruby, while Maeve begins a romance with her neighbor, Isaac. Eric and Adam’s relationship develops before suffering from Eric’s infidelity and the insurmountable differences between the pair. Aimee and Steve adopt a goat as their “ commitment animal ” in an attempt to bring them closer together as a couple. While Sex Education explores the complexities of these connections, Lily and Ola’s relationship remains stagnant and gets little screen time.
Lily and Ola got together at the end of Sex Education season 2 , shortly after Otis and Ola broke up. Throughout the series, Lily’s character has revolved around her obsession with aliens and passion for writing about her sexually explicit outer space fantasies, with the season 2 finale even centering around a school musical that she designs in this genre. Season 3 continues to focus on this aspect of Lily’s character: her alien sex adventure story is published in the school newspaper and she looks forward to a rumored alien landing event called “ The Eighth .” However, the show makes the mistake of denying Lily, and her relationship with Ola, any development or conflict outside of this trait. In fact, most of Sex Education season 3’s new characters have more complex and authentic storylines than Ola and Lily – including the goat.
As Jean and Jakob combine their families, Ola deals with conflicts at home and misses her mother more than ever, but Lily’s preoccupation with the Eighth causes her to ignore her girlfriend’s plight. Ola tells Lily that she would like to have normal sex sometimes and refers to their constant alien roleplay as “ strange ,” which hurts Lily’s feelings. Lily also goes through some problems of her own, as Hope punishes her for her story and the other students make fun of her, causing her to consider changing her personality in order to fit in. At the center of all of these problems is Lily’s alien obsession. This has always been a prominent trait of Lily's, but in season 3 of Sex Education , it is increasingly becoming her entire character.
Although in the past many have considered Maeve and Otis the most boring Sex Education couple , Lily and Ola’s season 3 relationship proves far less interesting. Even when the couple reconciles at the end of the season, aliens still manage to take center stage at the cost of meaningful dialogue between the two. The Eighth scene includes a few sweet lines in which Ola recalls her mother, and she and Lily support each other, but their resolution is frustratingly brief and simplistic after weeks of disagreement and miscommunication. Hopefully, Sex Education season 4 will bring Lily and Ola’s love story into focus in a more meaningful way.

When Sex Education Season 3 rolls around, the nerdy Ola and Lily are sure to be the show's most interesting couple.
The first two seasons of Sex Education had their fair share of couples trying to forge a romance at England's Moordale High School. Otis and Maeve took center stage, but couples such as Jackson and Adam also came to the forefront, which isn't surprising as they're the four main characters of the coming-of-age series . However, with Season 3 on the way , and more supporting characters falling in love, Sex Education 's most interesting couple may just be Ola and Lily.
Ola had a very turbulent time at Moordale after moving to town with her dad, Jakob. She jumped into a relationship with Otis, only to have her heart broken, as he was still hung up on Maeve. The break-up turned out to be a blessing in disguise, though, as it allowed her to explore her bi-curiosity and hook up with Lily.
Lily and Ola's relationship felt like such a fresh twist for Sex Education , a show in which people more or less know what they want to explore. Ola and Lily became the first fluid characters, and while they seem perfect for each other, they've got some flaws that'll definitely make for intriguing episodes. It's already awkward for Lily, who has vaginismus, and doesn't have the most comfortable time during intercourse. Their hook-up last season actually ended in a self-stimulation session next to each other, so it'll be interesting to see how they evolve sexually. Ola is ready, but it's going to be harder for Lily, who doesn't hide that she has trouble with such physical intimacy.
However, Lily is in good hands, because Ola is understanding and quite mature for her age, which is why she and Otis never would have worked. They're always there for each other, compassionate and caring in all ways possible, and seeing how Ola supported Lily as she directed Season 2's Romeo and Juliet play, you can tell there's a purity and unconditional affection none of the other couples have. The fact they're artistic and creative nerds just makes them more interesting.
Seeing Ola convincing Lily to be carefree is going to be a wild ride too, as Lily tends towards more ordered, controlled actions. so While this might cause conflict, they embrace each other's uniqueness and complement one another well. They may also end up helping Adam and Eric in their relationship, especially since the former has warmed to Ola, trusting her to the point she's the first friend he's ever hugged. This could flip the show in its head and shift from Otis dishing out advice geared towards heterosexual people.
As for Ola's flaw, while she has a flair for truly understanding people, she and her dad, Jakob, are on the cusp of a major problem. He got Jean, Otis' mom, pregnant, so Ola and Otis could become step-siblings if their parents reignite a romance. This will drive Ola up a wall, and surely she'll need Lily to lean on. Admittedly, this kind of heavy emotion might to too much for Lily, as she tries to cut out her robotic ways. But when it comes to Ola, we think she'll find a way. Ultimately, we can't wait to see what happens for them as they're the only true blue heroes in the show, not really out to hurt anyone for self-gain, and we hope their budding romance reaches amazing heights.

Sex Education is losing one of its core cast members next season as Patricia Allison announced she will not be returning.
"I absolutely have loved being on Sex Education so, so much … but unfortunately, I won't be joining the team for season 4," the 27-year-old actress who plays Ola, told the U.K. radio show Breakfast with Yinka and Shayna Marie on Tuesday. "I'm so sorry to have to break that to you guys. But some other opportunities have come up. I've been doing it for three years, and I've genuinely loved it so much."
When asked if making the choice to leave the show was hard, Allison said, "Absolutely, but I guess I have to say goodbye at some time, which is kind of sad, but other things are coming and that's really exciting."
Sex Education was picked up for season 4 last September, just one week after the release of season 3.
The show follows the sexual explorations of a class of British high school students at Moordale Secondary School. Allison's character Ola was initially introduced during the first season. In 2020, she addressed the unique way the show handles sexuality for their teenage viewers.
"We don't make the sex scenes too sexy. They're not sexy or glamorized or grotesque," she told The Upcoming . "And I think that's really interesting to see. In terms of nudity, it's awkward and embarrassing and we take these moments and give them a dialogue. And I don't think that's ever been done before."
Allison's former costar Simone Ashley recently shared behind-the-scenes insights from Sex Education 's intimacy training.
"We explored the movement of different animals to kind of portray different paces or different sexualities or how sensual something could be," Ashley, 27, told the Los Angeles Times' podcast The Envelope . "For example, we look to how snails mate, and when snails mate, they actually produce a plasma that intertwines."
The idea was that these different kinds of animal mating routines could inspire different onscreen connections for the Sex Education actors.
"So if it was a really sensual, slow kind of scene, we'd be like, 'Oh, it's like the snail.' And it's super like the plasma, like falling like honey. So we would make it about that or how dogs mate or chimpanzees mate — it's very like fast-paced and a different kind of style," she continued.

The creators of ‘Sex Education’ made a big mistake by writing these fan favorites out of the series.
For three seasons, the Netflix series Sex Education has been a hilarious but honest look at how awkward and scary the sex lives of teenagers really are. While most of the focus early on was on Otis ( Asa Butterfield ), his sex therapist mother Jean ( Gillian Anderson) , and Otis’ will-they-won’t-they romance with classmate Maeve ( Emma Mackey ), the series has also done a tremendous job in developing its supporting cast.
Maeve’s best friend Aimee ( Aimee-Lou Wood ) has gone from being the ditzy comic relief to a young woman haunted by a sexual assault. Otis’ gay best friend Eric ( Ncuti Gatwa ) is perhaps the best developed of them all, and Eric’s unlikely love affair with his severely introverted former bully Adam ( Connor Swindells ) has become a powerful storyline about finding yourself no matter how painful it may be.
The heart of the series, however, may belong to Lily ( Tanya Reynolds ) and Ola ( Patricia Allison ). With the recent shocking and inexplicable news that both characters had been written out of the upcoming Season 4 at a time when they have become so important for their realistic representation of life as a teenager, it has thrown the future of Sex Education into new territory, where the two characters with the healthiest relationship have been dismissed while their story is still yet unfinished.
Lily and Ola weren’t always major parts of Sex Education . They were interesting, well-written, well acted, and likable, but they served more as a subplot for Otis than anything else. Lily was without a doubt the oddest character of the bunch. She didn’t even seem of this world. In a way, she wasn’t. When we first meet Lily, she is a sex-obsessed virgin. It’s all she thinks about, except for aliens. She spends her free time writing stories about having sex with aliens and draws explicit pictures of it as well. Reality isn’t her friend. Best of all, she’s not ashamed about it. Lily is confident despite, or because of, her weirdness. We see that when she walks up to Otis, who she barely knows, and without any reservation, asks him to have sex with her, not because she likes him, but because she wants to have sex with anyone to know what it feels like.
It becomes a way for the emotionally stunted Otis to have a scene involving everything going wrong for what is supposed to be his first time. The scene could have been all about him, but it becomes just as much about Lily. We can see her detachment from the emotion of the deed. It’s an act for her, nothing more. When their sexual encounter falls apart, Lily opens up to Otis about how she doesn’t really want to have sex, she just doesn’t want to fall behind. It turns out Lily isn’t quite as confident in her weirdness as we were led to believe. She may be comfortable in her eccentricities, but underneath it all, she’s still a teenage girl who wants to fit in.
Ola is more of a regular character, yet like Lily, in the beginning, she functioned more as someone for the Otis character to be involved with that would get in the way of his potential relationship with Maeve. Ola is just as confident as Lily but in a more traditional way. She’s not obsessed with aliens. She’s just a “normal” teenage girl who likes to talk and joke around. You always see her smiling, especially around Otis, who she takes a quick liking to. Of course, just as with Lily, everything between Otis and Ola goes wrong because he can’t get out of his own head.
As with Lily though, there is more going on with Ola than to serve as an Otis subplot. Beneath the smiles is a lonely girl with a mom who has died. She’s starting life in a new school as well. And to top it off, her widowed dad Jakob ( Mikael Persbrandt ) has started dating Otis’ divorced mom. She finds solace in Otis, loving him even though he has a hard time giving it back. It breaks her heart when their relationship doesn’t work out.
With their relationships with Otis over, Lily and Ola could have faded to the background as minor characters that we check in on from time to time. Instead, their characters and their screen time grew. Lily and Ola become each other’s only friends. It gives Lily someone to talk to about all of her fascinatingly strange interests. It gives Ola someone to vent to about the idiotic things Otis does. Even though they seem so different on the surface, a strong friendship grows. And then it becomes more.
It seemed out of thin air when Ola started having sex dreams about Lily, but shouldn’t have been a surprising development. Sex Education is not just about straight or homosexual love and sex. It’s about sex and love as a whole , where just like the modern real world has opened itself up to, anyone can be attracted to anyone else, despite their past sexuality. There are no boundaries to love.
Ola is such a fan favorite for how open and straightforward she is. She is never one to doubt herself and not share her feelings. She’s the exact opposite of Otis. You know how she feels. And thus, she has to let Lily know how she feels by kissing her unexpectedly. We expect Lily to return the passion, as sexually curious as she is, but instead, she runs away and avoids Ola.
For Lily to show such fear of her own feelings lifts her character high above her eccentric traits. Her story and Ola’s is no longer about Otis or Maeve or anyone else now. It’s about them, who they are, and their feelin
