Sex Education season 3 spoilers follow.
Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Adam's (Connor Swindells) relationship has always been a divisive one for Sex Education fans – and, with the recent third season culminated in their break-up, the debate continues to rage on.
When Eric initially hooked up with his school bully during detention in the first season, we never thought we'd see the day that we were getting emotional about their decision to part ways.
At first, Eric and Adam getting together was an eye-roll inducing moment that fed into a harmful LGBTQ+ trope (we called it out at the time ), which was difficult to reconcile.
Basically, Eric deserved better. But the show, to its credit, has known that for a while now too, and – mirroring the real-world teen experience of falling for someone that's bad for us – we've slowly seen that realisation dawn on Eric.
While season two saw him continue to grow into himself as an openly gay Black man, embracing all of the things that make him so special, Adam just wasn't there when it came to his own journey towards self-acceptance. Eric ultimately chose to reject this secrecy in favour of a healthy, public relationship with Rahim – a move which was pivotal in Adam doing some self-reflecting of his own, and realising that he was bisexual.
By the end of the second season, Adam showed up publicly for Eric and seemed in a better place to explore his feelings with him. However you felt about Eric choosing Adam over Rahim, he followed his heart in that moment and it wouldn't have been fair for him to continue pursuing things with someone else (regardless of how great he was) if he was still harbouring feelings for Adam.
Much of the third season was dedicated to exploring Eric and Adam's dynamic within a committed relationship, but it soon became clear that, despite caring for one another deeply, their individual needs just weren't matching up.
Still more comfortable behind closed doors, Adam was happier with Eric when it was just the two of them and wasn't sure how to behave in social situations. In contrast, Eric wanted to shout about his love from the rooftops and explore new experiences with his boyfriend.
This issue came to a head after Eric's family trip to Nigeria, where he was encouraged to tone down certain elements of himself once again. He happened upon someone who was able to take him to a place where he could be his authentic self, showing that queer spaces exist everywhere and highlighting the importance of community.
During an important chat with his mum the following morning, Eric expressed that he no longer wanted to hide.
"I don't want to pretend," he said. "Not here, or anywhere."
When reunited with Adam, he broached the subject of going out to a club together. Quick to shoot the idea down, Adam said that he didn't think it would be something he'd enjoy and that he wasn't quite ready.
It was this exchange that spurred Eric to come clean about kissing someone else while he was away. While cheating in a monogamous relationship is hardly commendable, Eric was self-aware enough to realise that it was about so much more than that; it was an expression of the freedom to be himself that he so craved, and what he ultimately wasn't finding in his relationship with Adam.
During a gut-punching break-up scene, he later told Adam: "I just feel like I'm ready to fly, and you're just learning to walk. And I've worked really hard to find myself and I'm beginning to lose who I am."
The importance of Eric's acknowledgment that they were going in "different directions" shouldn't be underestimated. It's a tough lesson to learn that you can love someone that's just not good for you at that moment in time, and not everyone gets there.
Against the backdrop of Adam's devastating poem, it would have been all too easy to fall into the trap of painting Eric as the villain who'd shattered the heart of the finally-feeling former bully.
But Sex Education quite rightly didn't award Adam with this clear-cut redemption arc and happy ending. To do so would have done a disservice to Eric and his own journey. Instead, the relationship played out exactly as it was always going to – Eric chose to be with the person that he wanted, but inevitably outgrew that relationship as he prioritised his own needs.
What happens next for them in season four , we're not too sure. But with Adam finally feeling ready to come out to his mother (something that can't be rushed or forced) and Eric now able to fully put himself out there in the world, perhaps they'll each now have the room to spread their wings at their own pace.

Sex Education season 2 gives Eric a new love interest, Rahim, and brings back Adam, forcing him to choose between the two. He made the right decision.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sex Education season 2.
At the end of Sex Education season 2, Eric breaks up with Rahim and chooses to be with Adam. Despite their incredibly complicated history, here's why his decision was ultimately the right thing. Eric and Adam's relationship was the stereotypical bully and bullied dynamic in media. In Sex Education season 1 , we see Adam repeatedly making Eric's life a living hell, calling him out for his sexuality, robbing him of his lunch money, and essentially just being a total jerk to him. So much so, that Eric would shake in terror when he sees him approaching. Things all changed, however, when they kissed and became intimate (which Adam initiated) while they were both stuck in detention.
Unfortunately, before they could process what happened, Adam was unceremoniously kicked out of school and sent to military training. By the time he returns in Sex Education season 2 , Eric has moved on with Rahim, who obviously adores him and doesn't have any hang-ups about his own identity. It appeared like a healthy relationship, and a good thing for Eric, but it's clear that Adam's re-emergence prompted some confusion in him. In the end, Eric decided to let go what he had with Rahim, and be with Adam.
This narrative turn has been divisive for Sex Education season 2 viewers . Some were all for Eric's decision because it's what he really wants. On the other hand, there are those who point out that this invalidates the hell he went through because of Adam simply because he finally came to his senses, and that's a dangerous message to send especially in a teen-oriented show. Both arguments have merit, and it's true that there's a huge risk in dating someone who made him feel so unsafe, but looking at things from Eric's perspective, he ultimately made the right choice.
Eric's relationship with Rahim was almost perfect. The new student wasn't afraid to profess his feelings and exerted genuine effort to make their connection stronger. But, at the end of the day Eric have the same feelings for him - something that even his mom pointed out. Frankly, having Eric be with Rahim is problematic in itself because it's clear that he doesn't genuinely love him. It forces Eric to abide by what other people thinks is right for him, not what he wants for himself.
Meanwhile, there doesn't seem to have any good reason for Eric and Adam to be together. They have a complicated history - Adam brutally tormented Eric. He made his life a literal living hell without any reason, so it's understandable that people are against them starting a relationship. However, there's connection between them, and it seems to go beyond physical attraction, highlighted by their common commentary on Lily's Romeo and Juliet play. Eric also briefly mentioned their nightly hang-outs where they would just talk about stuff. Unfortunately, this is a detail that Sex Education season 2 glossed over; devoting more time into this would've better backed up the idea that they have the same wavelength. It's worth noting that Adam has changed for the better as well which plays a big part in how their relationship blossomed to a full affair this season. With all that considered, Eric owes it to himself to see where this thing with Adam will go, because he seems genuinely curious. Otherwise, he’ll always wonder what would’ve been if he went for it. In any case, Otis will be there to tell him if he sees something wrong in their relationship (like how he warned him about Adam this season). And if it goes awry, he can leave for good without any regrets, allowing him to move on completely with his life.
Eric's decision doesn't necessarily invalidate Adam's toxic behavior towards him. Just because Adam conjured up the confidence to openly be with him, doesn't mean that he's forgiven. At this point, it's Sex Education season 3 's responsibility to be mindful of how they progress the pair's relationship and clarify the message they want to send by the two coming together when the popular Netflix series returns.
Accidental movie and TV fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for procedurals and old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!) but won't dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).

Sex Education season 3 saw Eric kissing another guy while in a relationship with Adam, but there was a reason behind his actions despite the hurt.
Warning: this post contains spoilers for Sex Education season 3.
Sex Education season 3 sees Eric and Adam finally embarking on a romantic relationship, but then Eric cheats on Adam in Nigeria and it changes everything. It’s no secret that Adam Groff has had a difficult time controlling his anger and seeking healthy outlets for it that don’t involve bullying his classmates or beating them up. For the majority of season 3, Eric and Adam were doing well, but there was always a lingering frustration there that bubbled up to the surface nearer to the end of the season.
After breaking up with Rahim , Eric and Adam spent the intervening months between Sex Education season 2 and season 3 growing their relationship. They grew comfortable enough to eventually have sex and Adam, who found it hard to communicate his feelings, was slowly and surely opening up to Eric the longer their relationship went on. And yet, there was something missing that Eric wasn’t previously able to articulate (beyond being frustrated with Adam’s inability to discuss his feelings) until he visited Nigeria with his family for his cousin’s wedding. There, he meets Oba, a photographer who took Eric to an underground gay club where they kissed. Not being able to lie for long, Eric tells Adam and they eventually break up.
One of the biggest reasons Eric cheats on Adam was because his night with Oba offered him something he doesn’t have with Adam: freedom. With Adam, Eric was patient with Adam, who wasn’t as comfortable being who he was yet. But Eric was already comfortable in his identity and it chipped away at him whenever he was forced to hide it or hold back who he was for others’ comfort. Dancing in the club with Oba, Eric felt he could fully be himself and be uninhibited in his actions. Whereas with Adam, it sometimes felt that he had to take it easy and go at Adam’s pace. It’s something that reared its head a lot in Sex Education season 3 .
Eric kissing Oba ultimately revealed that he and Adam weren’t at all on the same page or stage in life. Despite Eric caring very deeply for Adam, the former wanted to get back to feeling alive while being himself, and that meant letting Adam go. There were a lot of examples indicating Eric’s feelings long before he cheated on Adam in Nigeria. Adam didn’t want to go dancing and he struggled with being too showy in public with regards to his identity. No matter how hard he tried, Eric grew impatient with Adam being several steps behind in coming into his own identity and his inability to express certain emotions in the way Eric could . To that end, Eric did feel shackled to the relationship and he wanted to be able to do things he felt comfortable with doing — namely, being his full and fabulous self no matter where he was or who he was with.
Eric has had his own struggles with regards to his identity, but his journey throughout Sex Education (and especially in season 3), revealed that he doesn’t want to be anyone but himself. Hiding parts of himself from his grandmother was painful and, though Adam accepted him, he was still not comfortable being himself. That, in and of itself, hindered Eric’s own freedom to be who he was. It’s unclear what’s ahead for Eric following his break-up with Adam, but it’s likely kissing Oba provided some relief despite the hurt it caused.
