Sex Education Season 2 is streaming now on Netflix and fans of the series may recognize a few new faces among the cast Stars like Aja Butterfield, Gillian Anderson and Ncuti Gatwa are joined by a few famous faces, a cast of newcomers and even a surprise cameo from a British national treasure.
We heard about Maeve's troubled addict mother in Season 1, but in Season 2 she is back in Maeve's life, played by Anne-Marie Duff. It's the second troubled mother role in a year for Duff, who was Ma Costa in HBO's His Dark Materials series. She is also known in the U.K. for her role in the original version of Shameless and for playing Elizabeth I in The Virgin Queen .
In a recent interview with Metro , Maeve actress Emma Mackey said of Duff's casting: "As soon as I found out she was playing my mum I welled up a little bit, I'm not gonna lie. She's amazing, she's just like, the most incredible woman and she's so sensitive and profound and works really hard and crafted this amazing character so all I had to do is just react off her."
For Sex Education Season 2, Moordale Secondary School has a new pupil in Rahim. Though when he arrives he turns the heads of the majority of the school's girls, he then reveals he is gay and becomes a love interest for Eric (Ncuti Gatwa). Though probably unfamiliar to English-speaking audiences, francophones may know actor Sami Outalbali from French TV shows like Netflix's Mortel, Les Grands and the movie Les Tuche .
Game of Thrones fans will recognise Lino Facioli, who in Sex Education plays Quiz Heads member Dex, as Robin Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie probably best known for still being breastfed into his young adolescence. However, the actor also starred in Jonah Hill comedy Get Him to the Greek .
Another Quiz Heads member alongside Dex and Maeve, Viv is probably the smartest person at Moordale and becomes the tutor of dissatisfied swimmer Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) while pining over Dex. Though the actor who plays Viv Chinenye Ezeudu is making her onscreen debut in Sex Education , it is only the first part of a Netflix double bill for her, as she is about to star in the streamer's Harlan Coben adaptation The Stranger later in January.
Also making his debut onscreen is actor and disability activist George Robinson, playing Maeve's new friend and neighbor Isaac. Speaking to HeyUGuys , he said of the character, "Him and his brother move into the caravan site, and he's a bit of a troublemaker. He mills around messing with people, telling people weird stories...very rarely does he say anything with a straight face, similar to myself."
After a potential chlamydia outbreak infects the school, a school board inspector is brought in to find out exactly what is at the bottom of all the hysteria. She also plays a vital role in the finale of Season 2 which suggests she might be back in a bigger role in Season 3. The actress who portrays her, T'Nia Miller, was most recently seen in a lead role in HBO's Years and Years .
In the last episode of the season there is a quiz, presided over by British comedy legend Stephen Fry (who in the U.K. is well known as a quiz host for his former role on BBC show QI ). American audiences may know Fry from his guest roles on shows such as Veep and Bones , or from classic British comedies like Blackadder and A Bit of Fry and Laurie , in which he starred alongside House actor Hugh Laurie.

It is almost time for the second season of Sex Education to hit Netflix . The series will be available to view today (Friday, January 17) at 8am GMT. The new show will be picking up the story from the finale of the last series which saw Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) struggling with relationships. Here’s a look at the actors starring in the new series.
Best known for her role as Dana Scully in The X-Files, Gillian Anderson was entering unfamiliar territory when she signed up for the first series of Sex Education.
But Netflix has confirmed all of the main cast will be returning, so she will be back.
Playing the role of a frisky sex therapist, she had audiences laughing at her bluntness.
The fact she is also offering sex advice to her own son, Otis Milburn (played by Asa Butterfield) makes her a relatable character to all mums around.
The young English actor began his acting career at nine-years-old.
Asa Butterfield, now 22, has already been nominated for awards for his performances which include The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Son of Rambow.
He plays Otis, the awkward teenager we all fell in love with from the first season.
Otis faces the embarrassment of having a sex therapist as a mother, who interferes with his personal life.
Witnessing sex at a young age, he has always felt awkward discussing the subject, but his shyness has made him a likeable character.
Maeve Wiley is Otis’ Saving Grace from the first season of the show.
She is considered a social outcast and a rebel who befriends Otis.
The teen provides him with the push he needs to face his sexual fears and begins a sex therapy clinic with him.
Maeve Wiley is played by Emma Mackey, 24, who donned fishnet tights and dip-dyed her hair pink for the series.
The English-French actress has been made famous from her role as quick-witted Maeve in the show.
Eccentric Eric grew up in a strict Christian household and his family were none the wiser of his sexuality as a gay man.
In the second series his boost in confidence is set to get him more attention at Moordale.
He is played by Ncuti Gatwa, 27, who received praise for his portrayal of a gay black teen.
The actress from Manchester plays “miss popular” at the school and forms an unlikely friendship with bad girl Maeve.
Sex Education marks Aimee-Lou Wood’s debut series and her most high profile role to date.
Jock Adam Groff is the headmaster’s son who has taken a liking to bullying Eric.
But unbeknownst to his peers, he has to live under strict rules at home.
In the second series he ends up at military school and develops conflicting feelings for Eric.
Connor Swindells, who plays Adam Groff, is also a model and former boxer.
Another jock and sporting star, Jackson Marchetti is admired by all as head boy.
He is played by Kedar Williams-Stirling, 25, who was also a CBBC actor.
Unique Lily Iglehart is in her own bubble as a member of the swing band.
She has come to be one of the more surprising and unpredictable characters, drawing erotic alien comics.
She is played by Tanya Reynolds, who has also played Teresa Benelli in the Sky 1 TV series Delicious as well as starring in Outlander.
Ola Nyman also befriends Otis and later comes to admire him.
She is the brainbox of the group and in the second season Otis will try to progress in his relationship with her.
She is played by Les Misérables star Patricia Allison.
Other cast members appearing in the second season include Sami Outalbali, George Robinson and Chinenye Ezeudu.
Radio Times said: “Apparently Ezeudu will play Viv, a super intelligent, multi-talented academic student, who is anything but talented in love, Outalbali will play Rahim a french student who turns heads when he joins Moordale Secondary and Robinson will play Isaac, who creates waves when he moves into Maeve’s caravan park.”
Season two of Sex Education starts on January 17 on Netflix.
