A child sex predator is facing 10 years in prison, thanks in part to an amateur teenage detective who trapped him online.
A Florida judge sentenced Zachary Spiegel, 38, for attempted online enticement of a minor on June 22, according to a release from the Southern District of Florida's U.S. Attorney's Office. Spiegel was caught through his online communications with a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl named Shayla.
However, there was no Shayla. Spiegel, a husband and father of two in Jensen Beach, Florida, was being catfished by a 16-year-old boy seeking to identify child predators in his area.
For several weeks in January, Spiegel sent "Shayla" explicit messages, including "graphic descriptions of the sex acts he would perform on her" and photos of his erect penis, prosecutors said. He also tried to persuade the fictional girl to meet him at a shopping plaza for sex in his car.
Spiegel and his imaginary victim arranged a time and place to meet, but he never showed up, texting "Shayla" that police stopped him for speeding and he ended up returning home.
At this point, the 16-year-old boy posing as Shayla decided to contact law enforcement. He and his parents met with Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Eric Urgo, who took over Shayla's persona.
Spiegel continued to communicate with the person he believed was a 14-year-old girl, sending more sexually explicit messages, more photos of his face and genitals and more solicitations to meet in person.
After a law enforcement investigation, officers searched Spiegel's home on January 20 and found the cell phone he used to correspond with "Shayla."
The Children's Advocacy Centers in Florida served over 34,000 children who were victims of abuse or neglect in 2018. Of those victims, 35 percent suffered from sexual abuse. A large proportion of child victims do not disclose their abuse until adulthood, if ever.
In December, a 53-year-old woman from Tampa was sentenced to over five years after laundering money for Newstar Enterprise , a "child modeling" website that trafficked in child sexual exploitation.
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old Florida man who pretended to be a teenager to convince minors to send explicit pictures was sentenced to 25 years in prison last November.
And last August, a 24-year-old man from Gibsonton, Florida, was sentenced to five years for tweeting child pornography at elected officials, media outlets and public figures.
Newsweek reached out to the Southern District of Florida's U.S. Attorney's Office for comment.

A TEENAGE boy attempted to rape a terrified 91-year-old woman after breaking into her home as she slept, it's been alleged.
The 16-year-old has been accused of smashing his way into the elderly pensioner's home in Adelaide, Australia, shortly before midnight on Thursday.
Adelaide Youth Court heard how the teen - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - then forced himself onto the woman as she lay asleep in bed.
She then woke up and started screaming for help, allegedly prompting him to flee - leaving behind a trail of blood, reports 7News.
The alleged sex predator was arrested in city's southern suburbs on Saturday afternoon by Special Crime Investigation detectives.
He was charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass and assault with intent to rape.
The victim has been left terrified and living in fear of another attack, the court heard, and is now living with family members.
When the teen appeared in court Monday, lawyers requested key details of the case be kept under wraps to prevent undue embarrassment for the accused's family.
A bid for the him to be released to live in a small country town was denied because of the seriousness of the charges.
According to court documents, the boy has a history of trespass offences.
He will remain in custody until his next court appearance in two weeks.

my son has just turned 16 and the girl he is friendly with has just turned 14. I have just found out that they have had oral sex. this happened when I allowed them to go to the park and for a walk whilst I got dressed to take them out for a meal on my sons 16th birthday and on the girls 14th birthday when they went out with her parents for her birthday. the girls parents are going to inform the school have told my son to stay away from their daughter and have threatened police. I am terrified that my son is going to get into trouble with the police. I know although that he has been told by me his dad and her parents that he won,t listen and will go near her at school. I,m terrified. I,m a single parent and feel a total failure.

This is such a difficult one as, since the introduction of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, all sexual activity is illegal under 16. This includes snogging. Honestly! Was your son still under 16 when this happened? If so, it is very unlikely that he would get into trouble. If you look at other threads dealing with under-age sex I've posted a few times about this. In your case though, if the girl's parents are threatening the police, I suggest you contact them and try to get them to discuss it with you. Show them the posts from threads on this forum. How did they find out? I suspect their daughter was not a "victim" because sex at this age is actually completely normal. Involving the police will serve no purpose. What makes this so frustrating is that if they were German teenagers (or Spanish, Canadian, South African...) this would be completely legal. (Because it's normal.) Why on earth does our government make this so hard? Feel free to show them this reply. Hope it helps.
This girls parents sound like absolute idiots! The police will not do anything. Apart from maybe a simple chat explaining consent and the rules around it to your son - but that will be it. And as for informing the school - they are a joke!
This is going on the assumption that this was consented by both your son and this girl of course. Which I completely expect it was!!

What exactly do they expect the school to do? They have massively over reacted there. I'm presuming they both consented so I think the most you can do is chat to your son and remind him about safe sex and responsibilities. You've done nothing wrong. Keep the lines of communication open and I bet your relationship with your son will be better than theirs with their daughter.
the girls parents are telling the school to keep my son away from their daughter. I,m scared that if they tell the school then social services will be involved and the police. thing is the girl has told her mum that she did not want to do it yet she still invited my son to her birthday celebration and her mum allowed them to go to the girls bedroom ( something I would have not allowed in my house hence I let them go to the park and out for a walk. I don't know how old your dcs are but my instincts tell me theyre only young and that you have your little child blinkers on. They will inform the school as they have a legal duty of care to this child.

Assuming the event was consensual on both sides (although legally a person under the age of consent can't consent!) this is a case where a sensible sliding age of consent would help almost everyone... Some places have a system similar to the following... The age of consent begins at 14... at that age, a person can consent to sexual activity with anyone aged between 14 and 18... at 16, they can have sex with anyone over 14... and once they reach 18, they can have sex with anyone over 16... on top of this, sexual activity between two people where there is less than one year's age gap is not automatically criminalised... If we had a system like this, the girl in the OP (if she was a willing participant) would not feel any pressure to say that she didn't consent... the boy would not be guilty of anything... and while the parents would probably be a bit upset, they wouldn't be as worried about the legal consequences... Oh, and the boy and girl would have probably have had better access to advice, contraception, etc...
He really needs to be made aware of any implications. From another point of view. If my 14 year old daughter was in this position I would take action as they have done. They are not the same age as one is able to consent and the other is not. The school also has a duty to safeguard and protect the young girl. As rape can include this act I would worry if he has refused to back off after being warned off.
