Among the main cast of four best friends, PR executive Samantha bluntly stands for sex without relational crap, golden spoon-WASP Charlotte for the fairy tale-romantic ideal, while sensitive flirt Carrie herself and stuck-up pragmatic lawyer Miranda seek a middle way; meanwhile gay talent agent Stanford Blatch provides a twisted mirror image. Carrie enjoys using hunk Kurt just for her sexual gratification for a change, then the quartet jumps on the dating game carousel, which never stops in the series.—KGF Vissers
Carrie's apartment is different in this pilot than in the rest of the series.
Carrie refers to Elizabeth as an "English" journalist, but as soon as the character speaks, she sounds Australian (and the actress playing her is indeed Australian).
Carrie Bradshaw: [voiceover narration] I didn't understand. Did all men secretly want their women promiscuous and emotionally detached? And if I was really having sex like a man, why didn't I feel more in control?
Samantha Jones: [pointing to Mr. Big] You see that guy? He's the next Donald Trump. Except he's younger and much better looking.

There was a time especially with female viewers. Sex and the City was smart, hip and brazen. My wife enjoyed watching it. I think the audience of non gay male viewers was rather small.

In this first episode. Carrie Bradshaw talks to the camera about romance Manhattan style. The age of un-innocence. Her friends Miranda and Charlotte are thirtysomething professionals looking for love. They hope to find it before they get too old. Their other friend Samantha just has promiscuous sex and enjoys it, just like a man.

Carrie decides to have an experiment with someone who previously let her down. Have sex with him and just get up and go. No strings.

There is a cheesiness about this show and it is very much evident in this first episode. It just does not ring true and the characters do not come across as real people. It certainly was not edgy or even funny.

These are rich people and I am not even sure how Carrie, a not so highly paid tabloid columnist can even afford to live in Manhattan or have this lifestyle. It is certainly not as smart as it thinks it is, it does come across as smug. Then again I was never the prime audience for this show. However the first episode does have a peppiness to it.

The deliberate omission of the better part of the early lives of the four women was the writers' way of exploring social life—from sex to relationships—through each of their four very different, individual perspectives.

Sex and the City has received both acclaim and criticism for its subjects and characters, and is credited with helping to increase HBO's popularity as a network. The series has won several accolades, including seven of its 54 Emmy Award nominations, eight of its 24 Golden Globe Award nominations, and three of its 11 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. The series placed fifth on Entertainment Weekly's "New TV Classics" list, and has been listed as one of the best television series of all time by Time in 2007 and TV Guide in 2013.

The series still airs in syndication worldwide. It spawned two feature films, Sex and the City (2008) and Sex and the City 2 (2010), and a prequel television series commissioned by The CW, The Carrie Diaries (2013–14).

On January 11, 2021, a continuation of the original Sex and the City series was announced. The sequel series will be titled And Just Like That... and will feature the original stars, with the exception of Kim Cattrall. It will be launched via HBO Max and will consist of 10 half-hour episodes. Production will begin in late Spring 2021.
