This is an important piece of work. This is America today. This is how America has always been. This is how America will continue to be. Regardless of the civil rights we gain for every person, prejudice will always be everywhere. White privilege is a real thing. I'm betting people who voted the title low is because they couldn't stand the politics. I hated that the whole show took place in one room, but I get it - it's an adaptation from a play. Good to see Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale back in action!

Faced with a series of infuriating unanswered questions, she navigates a system of unconscious bias, interweaving perspectives, and a tense marital dynamic with her ex-husband (Steven Pasquale) as they try to uncover the truth about their son's whereabouts. Based on the acclaimed Broadway play, and also featuring reprised roles by Jeremy Jordan and Eugene Lee, AMERICAN SON is an emotional depiction of modern day race dynamics and systemic tensions.

American Son doesn't really work as a movie. Its theatricality comes across as forced and curiously inert on screen, at close range to the actors, and its conversations about race and policing in particular feel stilted and contrive
American Son possesses considerable power in its premise, while wrestling with the claustrophobic aspects of transferring a stage play to the screen. Ultimately, the subject matter wins out, yielding a flawed but brisk 90-minute Netflix presentation.
Almost all the acting here is pointedly overstated, as if the performers are trying to project past an especially long proscenium.

The next time Netflix goes sniffing around Broadway, it should bring back something with brains to match heart.
"American Son"... tries very hard to squeeze significance out of every scene. Unfortunately it forgets to tell a story amid all the meaning. Details, details.
A deafening misfire, like the most unbearable, unwatchable daytime TV soap filled with the most awful self-conscious hamminess, parodic emoting and pointless shouting-at-each-other acting.

American Son has all the subtlety and nuance of Driving Miss Daisy (which is to say almost none), albeit with a more interesting and complex message.
American Son may not be a groundbreaking piece of filmmaking, but that's not what it was meant to be either. The film is a transformative adaptation that attempts to elevate elements of its original source material through the cinematic medium.
The film presents no clear answers, never lets up on the intensity, and provides no true comfort. It is not a movie for casual viewing, but aims to make you uncomfortable and affected.
