Severe Thunderstorms Sweep Through Tulsa, Causing Power Outages and Flooding

Tulsa, OK – April 19, 2025 – A powerful storm system moved through the Tulsa area Friday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning, leading to localized flooding and power disruptions across the city.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Tulsa County just after 2:00 p.m., reporting wind gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail in some areas. The storm caused downed tree limbs and power lines, leaving over 5,000 residents without electricity at its peak, according to Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSOO).

Emergency responders reported multiple road closures due to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas near the Arkansas River. Tulsa Police urged drivers to avoid high-water areas and to use caution during the evening commute.

'We’ve seen several vehicles stranded in water-covered roads,' said Tulsa Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Laura Mitchell. 'Turn around, don’t drown—it’s not worth the risk.'

Meteorologists predict that the storms will taper off by late Friday night, but scattered showers may persist into Saturday. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-50s overnight before rebounding to the low 70s this weekend.
