Severe Thunderstorms Batter Houston, Causing Flooding and Power Outages

Houston, TX – May 27, 2025

A powerful storm system swept through Houston overnight, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flash flooding to parts of the city. The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Harris County, with some areas receiving over 6 inches of rain in just a few hours.

The downpour led to dangerous road conditions, with several highways, including parts of Interstate 45 and US-59, experiencing significant flooding. Houston Police Department reported multiple stalled vehicles and urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

'We’re seeing high water in the usual trouble spots—Meyerland, the Energy Corridor, and near Buffalo Bayou,' said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. 'Residents should stay alert and avoid flooded roadways.'

More than 15,000 customers were left without power as winds gusting up to 60 mph knocked down trees and power lines. CenterPoint Energy crews are working to restore electricity, but officials warn that some outages may persist into Tuesday.

The NWS predicts scattered showers will continue throughout the week, with another round of storms possible by Thursday. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and prepare for possible additional flooding.
