Rented for me and my son to watch one evening as we were both off work and at home. I thought he would enjoy it as I had seen it at the theaters many years ago. He absolutely loved it and it was a wonderful quiet mother son evening at home
We start with a corporate, job driven, man. Gotta do the job, gotta teach the others, so the job gets done. The relationship, it's good, but, still, it's a job. The Christmas presents fail to elicit a gift giving effect. Does he really know her? It's the romance by number painting book picked up at the store on a whim, along with the daily purchases of fresh produce, and prepared meals. Yes, they care for each other, but are they really in love? Disaster strikes. Man vs Environment. Years of struggle. Redemption in the end, aided by mother nature, in more ways than one. Resolved by a man forced to eat and drink wild coconut, and crab, to be honored upon his return, by a feast, with crab. The juxtaposition here is magnificent. Many enjoy crab, most would consider it a delicacy, a high priced meal, something to savor because of its everyday rarity. Tom Hanks picks up crab legs, and drops it like it's a gas station sandwich and there's The Ocky Way next door. And the ending. Marked with the continued Angel Wings logo throughout, in the the form of plant seeds from a logo. Our hero chose to save one package from destruction, and is led to the end by it's Angel Wings logo. You can call it God, a sign, but after losing the love of his life for the second time, and there's nothing he can do about it, his Angel Wings sign appears yet again at the end of the movie, and we are left with him seemingly making a choice. To follow the signs. Or follow the corporate map. What do you think he learned?
Hadn't seen this since it came out when I was a kid, rewatched it so many years later as an adult, and it's such a great movie. Tom Hanks has always been one of my favorite actors, and his ability to carry this movie despite mostly only talking to a volleyball always amazed me. Despite the fact that very few people would ever experience his characters' story, his suffering and ability to keep breathing through it all is very relatable. Definitely recommend watching for any who have not seen this gem.
My reviews aren't like other people's. I don't mindlessly read other people's reviews waiting for something to make me upset and then requite an objection to then basque in snide self-righteousness that spiteful revenge toppled originality once more. No, I thoroughly dig deep inside myself and find what the movie means to me. So yes, I'm going to rate this movie five start, but not because other people are doing it, or not doing it, but because of my own personal feelings about it. Now, let's get down to it. This is Tom Cruise's best movie BY FAR. Yes, he was good in Forester Gump, and was in Sleepless in Seattle and all that, but without a doubt, this is his best movie. And Seattle is nothing like that, trust me, I've lived here all my life and there is not one ounce of anything that movie portrays that is anything like the essence of this city. Truthfully , this city is a cold, cold, cold. The essence is ice cold. There is not one instance of anything even remotely notable at all about it, and you can live here for years, and not be able to come up with a description of what it is like or be able to make a determination of whether it is good or bad. It has no personality at all, and is furthest away from being anything that harbors any warm tale of romantic sweetness that movie claims to proclaim. Anyhow, back to the movie at hand. It is good, and my favorite Tom Cruise movie all time. And Owen Wilson does a great job at playing the soccer ball.

I’ve watched Cast Away multiple times. It is a great story with a lot of poignant symbolism. Tom Hanks presented the character in such a wonderful way.
I saw this in theaters with one of my first boyfriends whose name was Wilson. He got a tickle out of the volleyball being named Wilson in the movie. Realistic movie about someone who is trapped alone in an island, and at least someone who is average intelligence and who knows how to handle things. Makes one think how they would handle being alone on an island. Tom Hank's had his hand in many of the hit movies back then. Same thing as Helen Hunt.

Cast Awayとは｢見捨てられたモノ｣の意味だが、本作の凄さとは人間の生命力への賞賛と人間が社会的生き物であることの再確認、そして物質文明を極めた飽食の時代へのアンチテーゼにある。 単なるサバイバル映画に見えて、人生を豊かに送る為の勇気を与えてくれる感動作だ。 孤島で四年間を送ることになるトム･ハンクス演じるチャックは国際物流の雄、Fedexの管理職だ。全世界と繋がり、分単位の正確性を要求される世界で生きてきた男が、時の概念のない孤島生活を余儀なくされる落差が何とも滑稽で悲しい。 本作は知恵の素晴らしさや生命の力強さを訴え、人の世で生きる有り難さを改めて感じさせてくれる。 前半の孤島でのチャックのサバイバルは、私達を生死を分けるギリギリの世界に引きずり込む。水と食糧と火の確保が如何に大切か、痛いほどの苦労と獲たときの歓喜には拍手喝采モノだ。 そして中盤、孤島からの脱出を図る際に苦楽を共にしたバレーボールの｢ウィルソン｣と離ればなれになるシーン、｢ゴメンな～！ウィルソン｣と叫ぶ姿は、ヘミングウェイの｢老人と海｣で釣り上げた巨大魚を擬人化するオマージュだが、いつ壊れてもおかしくない精神面を支えてくれた唯一の友を失うチャックの魂の叫びには毎度哭かされる。 終盤、忘れられた四年間の時の重みを受け止め、再出発に前を向くチャック。ロバート･ゼメキス監督らしい人の無限の可能性を信じさせてくれる温かいエンディングが待っている。 トム･ハンクスの演技には何時も脱帽するが、特に本作では彼の孤島での四年間の前と後の体格差に注目して欲しい。あの引き締まった体を造るために何と約23Kgも減量したのだ。彼の役者魂の真髄には心から感嘆せざるを得ない。 さて、本作のストーリーは至ってシンプルだが、それだけに哲学的な深みがある。彼は島の三年目に自殺を図った痕跡が有る。確かに生存するだけなら一人でも可能だが、其だけでは生きる事そのものに何の意味も見出だせない。人は社会の中で自己の存在価値を規定し、人の世の関わりの中でこそ生きる意義を見出だせる社会的生き物だ。だからこそ人と繋がる人生に感謝して精一杯謳歌しよう！のメッセージが胸に刻まれる。 でないとチャックの未来の為に自ら去っていった｢ウィルソン｣が余りに可哀想だ。 本作は、他でもない自分だけの人生を慈しむ事が如何に尊いかを気付かせてくれる、意気消沈した時に観たくなる心の傑作だ。

More like Lost Away on blu-ray!!!
Paramount have disappointed with this one they have done a fantastic job on most movie transfers, Cast Away has always been a favorite of mine and a movie that deserved the full sharp hd treatment on both picture and sound on blu-ray but sadly it hasn’t happened with this release, heavy amounts of grain and very blurred scenes on the beach which should be beautifully sharp, it’s such a pity but here’s hoping sometime in the future it gets a good 2K or 4K scan like it should’ve, still a good buy for fans but don’t expect too much!!!

Good story and very moving
Something of a modern Robinson Crusoe as Tom Hanks character gets stranded on a small desert island after a plane crash. The crash is WOW and makes the hair on the back of my head stand on end. The story moves along nicely and has some interesting angles. Helen Hunt also stars and provides some added drama to the film at both the beginning and the end. Are some parts of the film implausible? Maybe, but then again it is a film!
THis is the film where Tom Hanks lost shedloads of weight just for the role. When you've got that kind of commitment, the film really needs to be watched. Hanks plays a FedEx workeer whose delivery plane crashes into the sea and he's marooned on a desert island. He learns to survive and finally makes it back to civilisation. That's pretty much the whole story, minus the human interests that make this very watchable. Hanks as always, is brilliant, and there's the usual weepie stuff along the way. A good film to watch. Books you might like to read

*** This review may contain spoilers *** Jetting off on yet another important task, FedEx whizzer Chuck Noland leaves his girlfriend Kelly Frears (Helen Hunt) behind just before Christmas. Disaster strikes during the flight and the plane crashes into the ocean. Managing to free himself from the sinking jet, Noland is washed up on an uninhabited island. Without basic modern comforts and fighting solitude daily, Noland must live in hope that one day he might be saved before he loses his mind or the will to live. Tom Hanks (Noland) re-teams with director Robert Zemeckis after their hugely successful collaboration on 1994 awards stealer, Forrest Gump. Though Cast Away didn't win any awards (the usual cry of it being Oscar bait had preceded it) it can be argued to be Hanks' best performance. Few actors in the modern era could carry the film the way that Hanks does. Beguiling and drawing us into his loneliness, Hanks, with minimal dialogue (his only company being a volleyball that washed up with a few other FedEx parcels) excels with facial and bodily acting. Zemeckis, who should be applauded for the middle section and the terrifying plane crash that precedes it, puts Hanks' Noland through the mangler. The convenience of said parcels washing ashore aside, Noland is bumped bruised and dentally challenged, the Robinson Crusoe clichés exist of course, but Zemeckis and a heartfelt Hanks put us there on the island as well, with a pat on the back due for the excellent work by the sound department I might add. Sadly Cast Away is bookended by not so great work. The opening character introductions are unremarkable but just about good enough for the plot set up, but the ending lacks emotional punch and defies what has been built up. Things aren't helped by Helen Hunt's lack of chemistry with Hanks, but that in turn is not helped by the writing from William Broyles Jr. since it's only really now that it's Noland that we care about. It's a bit churlish to complain too much though, because Zemeckis kept us on the island with Chuck, there was no cutting back to grieving family or fruitless rescue attempts. With that it was a truly fine one man show, even if that is something that ultimately renders the ending something of a let down. 7.5/10
