I hope that he knew after the rantic incident in Lumious Airport. He was seeing Serena with glimmering eyes with awe. I think this is enough for us to know that he likes her.

Man, you just opened up the most controversial topic in Pokémon since the Sword and Shield upset-shipping. It is really hard to stay objective when answering this question, but I will try, listing the potential from each major female companion and then some others.
Misty-Obviously, this is a well loved ship from the community, but one that has lost a lot of potential. Still, there is so much evidence for this ship, and there is a reason it is strongly supported today. Plus, nostalgia, am I right?
May-Oh, Advanceshipping. What do I say? Sure they have chemistry. In fact, after watching Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, I went through an Ash x May phase for like a week. But really, Ash was more of a somewhat arrogant mentor for her rather than someone she could love. And Drew is kind of just a better guy for her, all things considered.
Dawn-I was waiting for this. DP is the second most loved Anime series, and it did a lot of things well. He became the strongest he had been yet, much more mature, and Ash and Dawn really hit it off with each other. Even if it isn’t my favorite ship on this list, I really admire Pearlshipping. Ultimately though, Ash and Dawn seem more like siblings than anything else, and Dawn had just a bit better of a character dynamic with Kenny or even Paul, thus leading me to believe that these relationships will be where she ends up. I’m honestly not the best person to advise you about this one, but that is my take on it.
Iris-And then the anime crashed and burned. Nobody really likes this relationship, it just straight out doesn’t work. Ash is childish(He’s such a kid!) rather than mature and focused on girls his age. He’s rusty, immature, hasty, and Iris is the same, which would probably lead to a terrible relationship. Just flat out bad.
Serena-Redemption! The most loved anime series of XY makes up the slack that the games create in Kalos. And with such a favorite series comes deep and developed characters, none moreso that my girl Serena. She goes from being simply a sheep in a herd to a person with her own dreams and goals, and she works exceptionally well with Ash in that regard. Ash became strong, adult and determined, ready to start relationships. The fact that Serena has a crush on Ash certainly helps make this ship very viable. Plus, they are shown to really compliment each other's strengths and weaknesses. I believe that it was even stated by some Pokémon company interviews that Serena was created specifically to be a person for Ash to be with when all is said and done, although nothing is set in stone. It does have some weaknesses, namely the fact that Ash for the most part treats her like every other girl, but this ship is loved just as much as Misty, and this is the most viable option. And also my OTP.
Mallow-Moving into the Alola Girls, Mallow is cheerful and similar to our newer Ash, but not in a bad way like Iris. And the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, right? Mallow is a sad character-overworked, dead mom, traveling brother-that seems to really care for Ash, and this ship has some real potential. Hard to focus on these two when there are other girls, though, and there was a decent amount of Mallow x Kiawe hints in the anime.
Lana-Lana had the whole “He’s your boyfriend!” gag that hinted at their relationship, and she got along with Ash excellently in one-on-one fishing, showing her own quiet determination and affection. I can think of a better water trainer for him though, and her screen time is split with the other girls…
Lillie-The most likely and popular of the Alola girls, Lille has some interactions with Ash that was reminiscent of Serena. Ash helped her with a lot of things, like her egg and her Poké-phobia, and probably spent more time with her than with any other schoolmate. Additionally, the very last episode of season 22 focused extremely on the pair of them. Again, however, she splits her time with the others, and acts very naive and childish at times. Still a fairly popular ship though.
Koharu-At time of writing, we haven’t gotten far enough into the anime to really explore her character; I can’t give an in-depth evaluation, especially since the focus in season 23 is more on Ash and Go. She doesn’t seem to have a lot of respect for Ash though, and she is childhood friends with Go…
Movie Timeline-The alternate Ash we see in I Choose You and Power of Us doesn’t seem to have any particular love interest, but there is possibility. Verity from ICU seems to be a Dawn clone, so you could argue the same points I made earlier. Risa the runner from TPOU seems to appreciate him, so maybe?
Other Movies-Two come to mind here. Melody from Pokémon the Movie 2000 was very forward about her feelings, though this is usually thought to be her getting under Misty’s skin. However, she seemed very concerned when Ash got caught out in a storm. Latias, despite being a Pokémon, also seemed to show an interest in him, and when Ash was chasing after Bianca thinking Latias was her, some say he acted strangely, suggesting a crush. And you can’t forget that kiss, now, can you?
People who showed up for like two episodes-You know these, the ones that flirted with him or wanted to marry him or something. Like Giselle or the one on the breeding farm. Honestly, the only one of these with real potential is Anabel the frontier brain, but everyone else on this list just makes a lot more sense.

Serena kissing Ash was such a big event that it broke the internet back in the day, because Serena was the first one to kiss Ash in a romantic way as part of plot in the anime and not in some movie, also the kiss was meant to be on the lips and not on the cheek or whatever.
According to Mr. Yajima Serena wants to travel to Hoenn in order to groom herself not only as a person but also as a partner that Ash deserves, the kiss was a parting gift from Serena and also as a final sign that she actually likes him romantically and not just in a platonic way.
Although, we know that Serena likes Ash, love cannot be one sided right? So, let's talk about our clueless protagonist for a second. You ready? Then let's go,
Even though he is pretty mature in the gen 6 anime he is still pretty clueless about girls even now, but he still shows some very subtle signs that he has “more than friendly feelings” for Serena, helping her cross a narrow ledge instead of helping Bonnie,

Now that Ash's part was made clear let's talk about Serena again. So, we know Serena likes Ash but does she really love him??
There are essentially 4 stages of a relationship, atleast as how I perceive it,
The first stage: obsession - Serena was in this stage from around the start of the series to like the summer camp arc.
The second stage: annoyance - when her obsession is gone and a person starts noticing the flaws in the individual they like or have a crush on, this stage for Serena started from around after the summer camp arc to around the first showcase of Serena. In around this time the hints of Amour are very low, as both Serena and Ash were absorbed in training for their careers.
The third stage: acceptance - around this time Serena accepts the flaws in Ash, this stage is very well depicted in the episode “all hail the Ice battlefield” and “seeing the forest for the trees”. By this time around Serena accepts the obvious flaws in Ash. In the two episodes, there were two big points to notice one being when Ash shoves his bag to Serena but she still stays doesn't retort for that, and the next is where Serena goes to bring Ash back and almost confesses her love.
The last stage: Love - by the last arcs of the XY anime namely after Ash gets the last badge, pulling Ash away to get him registered for the league, or having genuine trust on him about winning the league, this shows not only the nicer side of Serena but also shows how she is not

I guess I have successfully explained why the shipping works, and how it was more hinted at than any other Pokemon ships.
Now, talking about more on the ending up aspect, the metaphors and symbolism in the anime.
According to Tetsua Yajima, Serena's kisses Ash on the lips as a confession of her love. The kiss was kept ambiguous just to let the episode “The Endless Zero: Until we meet again” air on tv owing to the fact that Pokemon was marketed as a “Kodomo” anime. The episode is full of symbolism here and there, like the name of the plane Serena is going to board is called the H-71 Latias, the H-71 refers to Hoenn pokedex, 71 is the Dex number for Mawile, called Kucheet which is a corruption of a Japanese word(which I am pretty sure I can't write over here, so sorry for that😅)which mean with the mouth, so when you put it all together it come “With the mouth, Latias” meaning how Latias kissed Ash back in the Pokemon Heroes but with their mouths. Serena's goodbye to Ash was also a confession in itself as well, although the dub wasn't awful, but it did lose some nuances in translating from Japanese, her words went somewhat liked this,
“Ash, Thank you, I am glad I came with you,”
“You are my goal, and the next time I see you,”
“I'll be a much more attractive Women.”

We can take away a few things from this, one that Serena does leave Ash to become better as a person, but at the end it's all to be worthy of Ash, second, it implies that she'll work on her goal and then return to seek him out, but until she accomplishes this she won't seek him out.
Implying that he will be waiting to see her again.
Ash tells Clemont that he won't worry much about Serena as she has become a very independent and strong individual and he trusts that she would do great in her life.
While returning home, Ash has a montage of his memories throughout his Kalos journey, and very interestingly, most of the memories were about Serena, seeing her in the Fennekin outfit, or her being a disaster, her blushing like Tomato and so on, showing that he has enjoyed his memories with Serena and cherishes them more than Clemont and Bonnie. This sorta affirms my theory of Ash having sub-conscious feelings for our best girl.
Not only this but at the end Mr. Yajima had one last massive piece of symbolism for the ship that basically makes it canon. There was a shot of Baby-breath flowers just as Ash is about to enter his house(boy I am getting emo writing about this😢), Baby-breath flowers are like a symbol of purity, strength or “Everlasting Love”, implying how the XY anime is over, but the love Serena and Ash share is eternal and undying. Also the last frame goes like,
It can be taken as how the end of XY, was an end of an era as the animation went from hand-drawn pictures to computer made animations. However, it can also be interpret as how Ash and Serena have seperated to their own ways, Ash can't rest until he is good enough to consider himself a Pokemon master and Serena who loves Ash cannot stay with an unhappy Ash, so waiting is the only solution.
Mr. Yajima in an interview, along with confirming the kiss, gave some mouth watering interpretations. According to him we, the fans are said to assume that Ash and Serena will end up together at some point in future. Although, Yajima-san isn't the Director of the anime any more he is part of Pokemon, he was one of the crew members for SM and there even was a character based on him. He is also going to be the director for the new movie Pokemon: Coco.
Tetsuo Yajima is a big Amourshipper himself and he is not the only one, big names in the company like Junichi Masuda and Ken Shugimori are Amourshippers themselves. Not only this but the dub VAs for Ash and Serena, Sarah Natochenny and Havan Paschall are huge Amourshippers and still post pictures of Ash and Serena on their social media handles, often nagging each other about Ash and Serena. The last time Serena appeared to something related to Pokemon was back in 2017 in the Pokemon: I Choose You movie. She made a tiny cameo at the end, which itself again canons the ship again. All other characters that cameoed in the movie were just looking back at the camera or a person, however, in Serena's case it's the camera or the person(presumably Ash) who looks at Serena and picks her fallen hat and gives it to her.
