Exhibit A Season 1, Episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs” suspiciously leans on whether you like dogs or not, making it a non-episode in a Netflix series that is mostly strong.
Exhibit A Season 1, Episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs” suspiciously leans on whether you like dogs or not, making it a non-episode in a Netflix series that is mostly strong.
This recap of Netflix’s Exhibit A Season 1, Episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs” contains spoilers. You can read our full recap of the previous episode by clicking these words.
Exhibit A episode 3 explores the use of Cadaver dogs in police investigations. A dog handler at the start of the chapter (who does not like being called just a dog handler) explains how these dogs can be trained to sniff out forensic evidence, i.e. dead bodies. The entire process is compelling; the trainer teaches the dog to sniff out alternatives rather than finding food.
Episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs” quickly turns into one of the weaker episodes in Netflix series Exhibit A. I t tells the story of D’Andre Lane, a father imprisoned for the murder of his 2-year old daughter. He claims that his car was hi-jacked with his daughter present, but the police quickly turned the investigation towards pinning a murder on the father.
Exhibit A explains the use of Cadaver dogs; how a single dog went inside D’Andre Lane’s car and sniffed the remnants of a deceased body. Episode 3 tries to weigh both arguments that these dogs are merely doing their job to help build a case, but the other argument is that these dogs are sometimes not accurate, and their sniffing senses are not specific to a person.
It’s easy to feel sorry for the parents in episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs” because their daughter’s body has still not been found, and the mother is wholly convinced her daughter is still alive due to witnesses stating they have seen her.
But then Exhibit A episode 3 becomes the battle of whether you like dogs or not , and it becomes less about the potential injustice, and more about the viability of Cadavers. I sensed that the people interviewed in this documentary provided their view on the merit in whether they liked dogs or not. It was a flaky episode, with little depth to understand the full story.

Despite its presence on a streaming platform renowned for peddling cutting-edge true-crime docuseries', Exhibit A feels almost antithetical in its approach. It doesn't reopen cold cases and root around in their innards for hot clues; it doesn't revel in sensationalism, attempt to incite a nationwide manhunt or shock audiences with graphic depictions…

Exhibit A Episode 3, “Cadaver Dogs”
I don’t agree with your assessment of this episode,
“I sensed that the people interviewed in this documentary provided their view on the merit in whether they liked dogs or not”
Exhibit A in my opinion expresses within the context of criminology and law the issues faced with regard to, scientifically proven methods of deduction, being used by law enforcement incorrectly.
In my opinion the show was not developed to follow wholeheartedly the injustice line, unless to prove the method deployed for a conviction, was scientifically flawed by misuse.
The producers in my opinion weigh in on both sides, concentrating on the misuse of the method.
Cadaver dogs are deployed within law enforcement as stated by the English dog handler, to aid in telling the story and provide a location for investigators to find evidence, they are not deployed to find specific evidence, just a scent of a location of interest.
In my opinion, any conviction should rest on “beyond reasonable doubt” in the context of the cadaver dog conviction, it could be suggested as “reasonable doubt” that the dog finding a scent near the car, could have been the scent of a decomposing rodent particle from 5 years ago, as the dog has no ability to distinctly determine between decomposition time frame, or a decomposing human or rodent.
I have to agree with Tony. This episode does not hinge on one’s opinion of dogs. The piece merely suggests the strengths and limitations of decomposition dogs, and explains the way their findings can be manipulated in a court to convict the wrong person. The only thing that I find frustrating about the episode is the lack of conclusion and justice and a clear outcome, which is assuredly what the defendants themselves find even more frustrating.
