Now there are plenty of scrap car dealers out there but there are also plenty of shady individuals who claim to be scrap car dealers. So how do you find someone who is reputable and what should you look for when it comes to the disposal of your scrap car.

Here's a run down of what to look out for;

Look for a company that is well established, experienced and works within your locality.

Be sure to use a company that is licensed by the Environment Agency, this license ensures that the company are working within the confines of the law with regards to the transportation and carrying of scrap metal and scrap vehicles.

Make sure they are willing to fill in the V5 logbook with their company details. Upon collection they will need to fill in the yellow section 9 part of the logbook. You will need this slip and its information to return back to the DVLA to inform them that you are no longer responsible for this vehicle.

Ask if you can expect a letter of confirmation from the DVLA upon destruction or scrapping of your car. This is something that is generated once the car has been scrapped and the DVLA has been informed, you should receive this a few weeks after scrapping your car.

Be sure that your vehicle is taken away by recovery truck and not towed or driven away as it may not be in a road worthy condition. All true professionals will insist on removing the vehicle by recovery truck and would not want to run the risk of towing or driving such a vehicle away.

If you have been offered cash for your scrap car be sure that payment is received prior the car being removed, if they are offering to send the payment on then you could end up out of pocket.
