The Pilot By Denise Levertov Summary. Denise Levertov, The Pilot. It is wrong to try to get political legitimacy over a people by the use of force. Gaining effective power of governance will never come by any attempts to coerce the people using force. This poem Pilot, by Levertov criticizes the attempt to impose political authority on people. It castigates the American involvement on the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War constituted gross injustice perpetrated by the American government. The war initially between North Vietnam and South Vietnam but the allies of the two countries joined, making it a protracted battle with communist countries like China and Russia rallying behind North Vietnam and the anti-communist countries like United States supporting South Vietnam. America came under sharp focus for being the key strategic bomber against North Vietnam. Its key agenda was to prevent a communist insurgence and capture of South Vietnam. A counter offensive move by the communist side in 1968 made US to lose focus on the war, eventually withdrawing from the war and leaving the South Vietnam side to fight for themselves. There followed widespread criticisms back at home on America’s involvement in the war. This poem has been set in a war and conflict context. It happened during the cold war years, where nations were using military bombs to silence their opponents and to assert political authority. The narrator is remorseful about the inhuman act of bombing people, just because one is executing orders from a master. She thinks the bombers had a false sense of politeness as they were actually on a mission to drop bombs against a foreign nation. To her, this shows ignorance on their part. The people at the actual battlefront must have been so inhuman because of their upbringing back at home. This runs all the way from the schools they attended, their parenting and the courses they studied. The author brings out the character of Mrs. Brown as a kind and loving woman who behaves just like most of the Vietnamese women do. She wonders how a kind woman like Mrs. Brown would bring up a son with such a cruel heart to be a pilot bomber. The poem reveals the displeasure about the bombing campaign that the pilots were carrying out. It also hints at the possible withdrawal and change of mind by the pilots. The author says she hopes the chances of the pilots’ success in life must have been so minimal when they went back home. The war highlighted is being executed in a foreign land on orders from the pilots’ homeland. The way of life of the Americans back at home does not place much emphasis on the importance to respect humanity as the Vietnamese do. The have a culture of machoism, having been brought up by Legionnaire fathers. I personally think the poem captured the exact happenings of the Vietnamese war. It also highlights the disapproval that accompanied the war. Actually, this war was one of the proverbial Achilles’ heel war case for the US government. It has always guided future policy on America’s engagement in foreign wars. This poem creates sympathy for the bombing victims. It also creates a feeling of revenge against the American bombers. Their heinous acts appear too insensitive to be forgiven. The author says that she wishes she could retain her hostility to revenge whenever there is an opportunity. The author has effectively used repetition to lay emphasis on the cruelty of the pilots, their wanting life back at home and the reasons for her final resolve to question relationships to avoid embracing people blindly.
