After sitting out the last couple months of 2016, Selena Gomez is wasting no time making headlines in the new year. Seriously, girl. There’s no rush.
A day after paparazzi caught the “Revival” singer kissing R&B star The Weeknd , Gomez is making the internet’s collective jaw drop with a revealing photo of the actress wearing next to nothing.
One half of Kim Kardashian ’s favorite photography duo, Mert Alas, shared a behind-the-scenes picture on social media of a nearly nude Gomez posing in front of a mirror in a gold thong. With only a towel covering her chest, the former Disney star seductively stares at her reflection, baring her bum and a tattoo across her back.
Alas, who appears in the background of the photo, captioned the Instagram “Beauty and the Beast.” According to E! Online, he also tagged The Weeknd in the comments section with a black heart emoji. Alas later removed the photo of Gomez from his Instagram account, while the singer herself has yet to comment.
Instagram’s reigning celebrity queen officially returned to the photo-sharing app on Thanksgiving with a heartfelt note to fans. Ever since then, she has shared sparingly, only posting a handful of pics that have some fans suspecting that new music from the singer is on its way .
This new pic, however, is causing some controversy for Selena stans. Amid the “yaaas, queen”s and Demi Lovato dragging in the comments section, some followers expressed disappointment that Gomez would agree to pose for the revealing shot after her emotional comeback speech at the American Music Awards in November.
“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here,” she told the crowd, putting her hand to her heart. “I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore. All I can say from the bottom of my heart is that I’m so grateful that I have the opportunity to be able to share what I love every single day with people that I love.”
A little contradictory? Maybe. That being said, now is as good of a time as any to remind everybody that it’s Gomez’s choice, not her followers, to do what she wants with her body. Just because she’s showing some skin, it doesn’t mean that she’s not being true to herself, OK?

Selena Gomez was feeling cheeky Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly after E! News confirmed that the "Good for You" singer is now dating The Weeknd , famed photographer Mert Alas shared a behind-the-scenes picture of Gomez posing in thong underwear on the set of a photo shoot. Wearing large hoop earrings, the pop princess covered her bare breasts with a towel while pouting for Alas, who captured the moment on his iPhone.
Alas titled the provocative shot "Beauty and the Beast." He later tagged The Weeknd in the comments and included a black heart emoji, but the "Starboy" singer hasn't written a response.
The Weeknd previously commented on Gomez's booty in the song "Party Monster." Describing his dream woman, he sang, "Angelina, lips like Angelina / Like Selena, ass shaped like Selena."
That same day, The Weeknd's ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid unfollowed Gomez on Instagram.
Gomez and The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) both performed during the 2015 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (a year before Hadid strutted her stuff alongside Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner ). About a year and two months later, the musicians were photographed kissing outside Giorgio Baldi in L.A. "At first, Selena and Abel wanted to keep their relationship a secret," a source told E! News . "But they've decided they really don't care if everyone knows about them."
For different reasons, neither star was looking to get into a relationship. But The Weekend "always had a thing for Selena," the source said. "He thinks she is extremely talented and sexy."
While their coupling likely came as a shock to fans, Gomez and The Weeknd have decided to take things day-by-day. "They are on the same level with expectations and think the other is really fun," the source explained. "They are taking things slow and getting to know each other."
Gomez is slowly but surely wading back into the spotlight after taking a break in 2016. The Weeknd, meanwhile, will debut the music video for "Party Monster" Thursday. The singer, 26, will also headline Bonaroo with Chance the Rapper , the Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 in June.

Yes, Selena Gomez does indeed wear thongs when the occasion arises.
In the past she has been photographed in various outfits sporting a VPL with the sight of a thong kept well concealed.
The question of 'has Selena Gomez ever been photographed wearing a thong' can now be answered.
The first earlier in the year was well intentioned, but the second time, purely an accident.
Before now, Selena showed a great deal care keeping her underwear hidden. But that changed dramatically this summer when in recent months Selena openly shared a photo during a brief rest from a 'behind-the-scenes' photoshoot with her new boyfriend.
And just recently her thin black dress became transparent from the paparazzi camera lights revealing her bare boobs and nipples from the the front view; only for her larger than life black thong showing up from a rear view when getting into an awaiting car.
Whether this was intenational giving her recent moments, or a simple waldrobe malfunction, we'll never know.
Here she is in front of a mirror wearing a high leg lace nude thong - or gold we can't quite work it out - holding a towel wrapped around her waste, but still enough for the hint of thong and back tattoo.

But on the way out the focus was on her posterier as her black dress become very see-through revealing her black thong.
Had she been wearing the lacey nude thong she wore earlier in the year Selen's thong may not of showed up under these lights at all.
