Seit der Gründung des Fürstentums des Augustus (29 v. Chr.) wird der Hauptplatz in der monetären Typologie der Person des regierenden Kaisers und seiner Familie eingeräumt. Ihre Porträts sind die häufigste numismatische Handlung dieser Epoche.
Mit der Annahme des Christentums enthält die Münztypologie Elemente neuer religiöser Symbole.
Nach dem Untergang des Weströmischen Reiches im Jahr 476 n. Chr. die einstige typologische Tradition wurde in Byzanz lange bewahrt. Es wurde auch von den "barbarischen" Staaten geerbt, die in den ehemaligen römischen Ländern Westeuropas entstanden.
Im Mittelalter erschienen in europäischen Ländern neben dem Porträt des Herrschers (meistens sehr bedingt) Bilder von Christus, der Muttergottes und christlichen Heiligen auf Münzen. Allmählich werden heraldische Figuren verwendet. Und im Laufe der Zeit wird das Familien- oder Staatswappen zu einem der häufigsten Elemente von Münztypen und ist es bis heute geblieben.
Die Entwicklung der Münztypologie im Osten verlief auf anderen Wegen. Nach chinesischem Vorbild wurden sie bis ins 19. Jahrhundert ausgefertigt. gegossenes Metallgeld in Korea, Japan, Vietnam und einigen anderen Ländern Südostasiens. In der islamischen Welt begann der Geldumlauf mit der Assimilation der alten alten Traditionen, die von Byzanz bewahrt wurden. Obwohl auf den Münzen der islamischen Länder Abbildungen von Tieren, seltener von Menschen zu sehen sind, überwiegt im Großen und Ganzen zweifellos das ornamental-kalligraphische Prinzip. Die Inschriften tragen immer die semantische Hauptlast. Ihr Inhalt ist in der Regel ähnlich: ein Glaubenssymbol („Es gibt keinen Gott außer Allah, Muhammad ist der Prophet Allahs“), dem die Anhänger der schiitischen Richtung im Islam die Worte „Ali ist der Stellvertreter von Allah“), berühmte Zitate aus dem Koran, die die Namen der ersten vier („rechtschaffenen“) Kalifen oder zwölf Imame (von Schiiten anerkannt), den Nennwert der Münze, den Ort und das Datum der Prägung, den Namen und den Titel der der Herrscher (manchmal zwei oder sogar drei Personen, die auf verschiedenen Ebenen einer einzigen hierarchischen Leiter stehen, zum Beispiel Kalif, Sultan und Emir) . Manchmal finden sich sogar in poetischer Form arabische Münzinschriften (die sogenannten Legenden).
Somit sind muslimische Münzen eine äußerst wichtige Quelle zur Geschichte des Orients im Mittelalter. Im XX Jahrhundert. Die Metallbanknoten der meisten islamischen Staaten sind in ihrem Erscheinungsbild europäischen ähnlich, die schon früher bei der Etablierung des Münzwesens in den Ländern der Neuen Welt zum Vorbild genommen wurden.

Mittelalterliche Menschen behandelten Künstler mit einer Mischung aus Bewunderung und Misstrauen. Ein gewisser Verdacht wurde durch die Tatsache geweckt, dass der Sänger und der Geschichtenerzähler und der amüsante Mann auf dem Markt - sie alle waren "Schauspieler", d.h. in den Gesichtern anderer Menschen dargestellt; Sie schienen ihre Charaktere durch sich selbst zu ersetzen, ihr eigenes Gesicht abzulehnen und die "Masken" anderer Leute aufzusetzen.
Nach mittelalterlichen Vorstellungen war der Beruf des Künstlers mit dem Teufel verwandt – ein Heuchler und Betrüger. Die Kirche betrachtete Straßensänger als Menschen, die sich "verirrt" hatten, und versprach ihnen ewige Qualen im Jenseits.
Aber die Bürger, der Bauer und der Ritter hatten nicht so viel Unterhaltung, so dass das Erscheinen eines Zauberers auf dem Stadtplatz, eines Sängers und eines Dichters in der Ritterburg immer zu einem Feiertag wurde. Das Leben eines mittelalterlichen Menschen verlief im Grunde auf einem eintönigen Weg, der von Vätern und Großvätern festgelegt wurde; jedes neue Gesicht war ein Kuriosum, es wurde zu einem offenen Fenster zur weiten Welt. Und wenn der Fremde die Legenden über König Arthur und seine Ritter kannte, über den tapferen Roland und die Helden der Kreuzzüge, goss der Stadtplatz großzügig Silber- und Kupfermünzen in seinen Hut, und der Ritter gewährte mehrere Abende lang Schutz an seinem Herd.
Besonders berühmt waren Troubadoure – Dichter, die ihre Gedichte zu musikalischer Begleitung vortrugen. Im Grunde führten sie ein Wanderleben und zogen vom Hof eines edlen Herrn zum anderen. Die Blütezeit der Kunst der Troubadoure kam im XII-XIII Jahrhundert in Südfrankreich. Der Ursprung des Wortes „Troubadour“ hat gar nicht mit der Pfeife zu tun, wie man meinen könnte, sondern mit dem altfranzösischen Wort „trobe“, was „geschickter Empfang“, „besondere Anmut“ bedeutet. In der Tat waren viele Troubadoure in der Lage, schöne Lieder zu komponieren, elegant, mit komplexen Reimen und reichem Wortspiel. Unter den Troubadouren gab es viele Ritter, Leute von adliger Herkunft; Einer der besten Dichterritter war Herzog Guillaume von Aquitanien. Die Gedichte der Troubadoure, die seiner auserwählten Herzensdame den selbstlosen Dienst eines Ritters vorsangen, kamen schnell in Mode. Es ist nicht verwunderlich, dass Frauen sie sehr mochten; edle Damen begannen, von ihren Fans das in Gedichten beschriebene Verhalten zu fordern. Der Ritter, der nur sein Schwert zu schwingen verstand, wurde jetzt lächerlich gemacht; Herren waren den Damen lieb, die ihre Gefühle in Worten und geheimen Zeichen auszudrücken wussten und die Geheimnisse des weiblichen Herzens verstehen konnten. Die Poesie der Troubadoure hatte einen außergewöhnlich großen Einfluss auf die Herausbildung einer besonderen Ritterkultur, die sich ein oder zwei Jahrhunderte später in ganz Europa ausbreitete.
