The government should think again about stripping Islamic State (IS) brides and even fighters of their British citizenship when they turn up at displacement camps or in detention in Syria.
Home Secretary Sajid Javid says he takes such decisions - which can only be made against Britons who have a dual nationality - after weighing up the potential threat each person could pose if they were allowed to return to the UK.
But I am struggling to understand how stripping individuals who pose a serious security risk of their British passport is a solution. They still pose a threat, they just do not have such easy access to British streets - though given our inter-connected world they could still cause harm from a distance.
Then there are the fundamental principles of human rights, due process and the rule of law - values that underpin Britain and what it means to be British.
You could also throw in other less legalistic terms like compassion when considering complex cases such as that of Shamima Begum , the IS bride from Bethnal Green who has just lost her newborn son after he fell sick at the camp where she is sheltering.
Morality, human decency and the ability to reconcile are qualities that help to make the British state and what it stands for so much better than anything IS could offer.
Taking the "British" part away from an IS foreign fighter or bride means preventing them from one of the best chances to make them face justice for their crimes, or to be placed in a programme of deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration.
Prosecuting cases against individuals who fought for IS is incredibly difficult because of the challenge to acquire sufficient evidence, but if it is going to be tough for British police, the security services and prosecutors, then imagine what justice will look like in Syria or Iraq.
How is an unfair trial in a foreign court that could end in the death penalty the right outcome?
Also, how is it right to leave the problem of foreign fighters in the hands of the Syrian Kurdish forces who are running the camps? Britain demonstrably has a greater responsibility for British and recently-made-ex-British nationals than they do.
The most likely outcome for IS brides and other supporters who were not involved in the fighting - as well as possibly the fighters unless a long-term solution is found about how and where to try them - is that they eventually leave the camps and find new places to settle.
Among this number will be those who have been told they are no longer British citizens.
If they are such a threat to national security that they had to lose their passport, then there is suddenly a dispersed group of radicalised individuals and their children that the UK has far less of an ability to keep close and monitor, but who potentially retain an even more hostile interest in Britain from afar.
One final consideration is the impact on public opinion of any future suffering of these once-British IS brides and their children. The death of Shamima Begum's baby, Jarrah, offers an indication.
His mother, 19, had already drawn a degree of sympathy despite her decision to support a group that tortures and beheads those who oppose its extremist interpretation of Islam.
But the loss of her third child - two others died while she was pregnant with Jarrah - makes Shamima Begum look even more pitiful and Mr Javid's decision to revoke her British citizenship appear heartless - even if he was justified in doing so on security grounds.
Her baby would most likely have died whether or not his mother was still British. The home secretary's intervention simply resulted in amplified support for an IS bride and a lot of condemnation of his government.
