National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day was created
in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam.
Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the secretarial position,
to a company or business and to management. His goal in creating
this day, was to encourage more women to become secretaries. (Nowadays, that
would be both women and men). Using his skill and experience in public
relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job that
secretaries do. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of
the importance of secretaries.

The name of this special day has changed and evolved over the past few decades.
Yet, the importance of recognizing these vital individuals has continued
to grow. The two new terms in use today are: "Administrative Professionals"
and "Executive Administrators (or Admins)". The two names sometimes
mean different roles and responsibilities in different companies and
organizations. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than
the original "Secretary" role.

The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed
significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. We think Klemfuss
would agree with the evolution of Secretary's Day. In Harry Klemfuss' day,
these positions were the realm of women. Today, you find males in these
positions, too.

Secretarys & Admin Assistants Day
The "suits"
may come and go ... but
it's the professional expertise of secretaries, administrative
assistants, and receptionists who keep the engines running.
While Bosses Day is fixed to October 16 every year, Secretary's Day is a moveable feast celebrated on a Wednesday in the fourth week of April during Administrative Professionals Week.

In 2022, admins and secretaries will be honored on Wednesday, April 27th in the US, UK, and Canada.
The role of secretaries and executive assistants have been recognized since the end of World War II, when industry boomed in the early 1950's. Jobs were also plentiful, as women were called upon to take on the role as assistants to the new captains of industry. Today, their role has become increasingly important to day-to-day operations of companies worldwide.
In the modern workplace, new titles such as Administrative Assistant and Executive Assistant represent a legion of women - and men - who are highly skilled and educated. Far from just possessing the stereotypical "interpersonal and communications skills", today admins are responsible for office duties ranging from expert computer troubleshooting to managing new hires.

Meanwhile, a gift component to the day continues to presented a challenge for bosses and executives. How do you honor assistants without being sexist or condescending? This is especially true as more men are increasingly hired for admin positions.
It becomes much easier for bosses and managers if they have a close professional relationship with their admins (bestowing a gift basket, a gift card from Starbucks, or other rewards as appropriate.)

In larger companies, it is the smart department head who will take an entire administrative staff out to lunch to celebrate the day.

Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day or Admin Day ) is a day observed yearly in a small number of countries. It is not a public holiday in any of them. In some countries, it falls within Administrative Professionals Week (the last full week of April in the United States). The day recognizes the work of secretaries , administrative assistants, executive assistants, personal assistants, receptionists , client services representatives, and other administrative support professionals. Typically, administrative professionals are given cards, flowers, chocolates, and lunches. [1]

During World War II, there was a shortage of skilled administrative personnel in the United States due to Depression-era birth-rate decline and booming post-war business. [10] The National Secretaries Association , founded in 1942, was formed to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel to the economy, support their personal development, and to help attract workers to the administrative field. [11] [12] Key figures who created the holiday were the president of the National Secretaries Association, Mary Barrett; president of Dictaphone Corporation, C. King Woodbridge; and public relations account executives at Young & Rubicam , Harry F. Klemfuss and Daren Ball. [13]

The National Secretaries Association's name was changed to Professional Secretaries International in 1981 and to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) in 1998. [12] Administrative Professionals Day is a registered trademark with registration number 2475334 (serial number 75/898930). The registrant is IAAP. [14]

The official period of celebration was first proclaimed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles W. Sawyer as "National Secretaries Week", which was held June 1–7 in 1952 with Wednesday, June 4 designated as National Secretaries' Day. The first Secretaries' Day was sponsored by the National Secretaries Association with the support of corporate groups. [13]

In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April, with Wednesday now designated as Administrative Professionals Day. [13] The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981 and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to encompass the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative support staff in the modern economy. The week-long observance was created in order to space out the bookings at restaurants, country clubs, and other places where administrative professionals would be taken out to lunch. [2]

Some critics take an anti-consumerist stance and accuse the flower, card, and candy industries of inventing the holiday for convenient sales between Easter and Mother's Day , which is the second Sunday of May in the United States. [15] [16] It has also been argued that the typical gifts of flowers and cards unintentionally mark the holiday and the administrative role as a gendered one, since these are typically feminine gifts, and that a specific day to celebrate administrative staff " ghettoizes " and separates the administrative staff from the rest of their workplace peers.
