Administrative Professionals Day (also known as Secretaries Day or Admin Day ) is a day observed yearly in a small number of countries. It is not a public holiday in any of them. In some countries, it falls within Administrative Professionals Week (the last full week of April in the United States). The day recognizes the work of secretaries , administrative assistants, executive assistants, personal assistants, receptionists , client services representatives, and other administrative support professionals. Typically, administrative professionals are given cards, flowers, chocolates, and lunches. [1]

During World War II, there was a shortage of skilled administrative personnel in the United States due to Depression-era birth-rate decline and booming post-war business. [10] The National Secretaries Association , founded in 1942, was formed to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel to the economy, support their personal development, and to help attract workers to the administrative field. [11] [12] Key figures who created the holiday were the president of the National Secretaries Association, Mary Barrett; president of Dictaphone Corporation, C. King Woodbridge; and public relations account executives at Young & Rubicam , Harry F. Klemfuss and Daren Ball. [13]

The National Secretaries Association's name was changed to Professional Secretaries International in 1981 and to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) in 1998. [12] Administrative Professionals Day is a registered trademark with registration number 2475334 (serial number 75/898930). The registrant is IAAP. [14]

The official period of celebration was first proclaimed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles W. Sawyer as "National Secretaries Week", which was held June 1–7 in 1952 with Wednesday, June 4 designated as National Secretaries' Day. The first Secretaries' Day was sponsored by the National Secretaries Association with the support of corporate groups. [13]

In 1955, the observance date of National Secretaries Week was moved to the last full week of April, with Wednesday now designated as Administrative Professionals Day. [13] The name was changed to Professional Secretaries Week in 1981 and became Administrative Professionals Week in 2000 to encompass the expanding responsibilities and wide-ranging job titles of administrative support staff in the modern economy. The week-long observance was created in order to space out the bookings at restaurants, country clubs, and other places where administrative professionals would be taken out to lunch. [2]

Some critics take an anti-consumerist stance and accuse the flower, card, and candy industries of inventing the holiday for convenient sales between Easter and Mother's Day , which is the second Sunday of May in the United States. [15] [16] It has also been argued that the typical gifts of flowers and cards unintentionally mark the holiday and the administrative role as a gendered one, since these are typically feminine gifts, and that a specific day to celebrate administrative staff " ghettoizes " and separates the administrative staff from the rest of their workplace peers. Tony Ornato, the longtime Secret Service agent who ran former President Donald Trump's security detail, left the Secret Service on Monday, according to multiple media reports.
His departure came two months after he was identified as a central figure in former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's bombshell testimony before the House committee investigating the Capitol riot.
Hutchinson had shared with the panel what Ornato had told her about Trump's behavior leading up to and during the insurrection on January 6, 2021. Among other details, she said Ornato told her about how Trump had tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle he was traveling in and lunged at a Secret Service agent while demanding to be taken to the Capitol.
Ornato told CNN in a statement: "I did retire today to pursue a career in the private sector. I retired from the US Secret Service after more than 25 years of faithful service to my country, including serving the past five presidents. I long-planned to retire and have been planning this transition for more than a year."
He also told the outlet that he hasn't taken up any roles working for Trump or the former president's organizations.
His retirement comes two days before he was set to be interviewed by Department of Homeland Security investigators as part of a probe into the Capitol riot, according to The Intercept.
The outlet reported that it had obtained several emails sent between Ornato and DHS investigators, in which Ornato agreed to an interview on August 31. The Intercept reported that the investigators wanted to speak with Ornato as early as June 29 but that he told them he'd be on vacation and would "circle back" with them after August 24.
Per The Intercept, Ornato has indicated in an email that he still intends to attend the interview. However, investigators can no longer compel him to cooperate as a federal employee in his testimony because he is now a private citizen.
Members of the House Oversight Committee have noted a trend of former officials refusing to be interviewed for investigations into Trump after they quit. In response, the committee introduced the IG Testimonial Subpoena Authority Act , which would give investigators the power to subpoena individuals beyond current federal employees. However, the bill has yet to pass the Senate.
CNN previously reported , citing an anonymous source, that Ornato had met with the January 6 House Select committee in January and March — prior to Hutchinson's testimony. The questions and answers from those sessions have not been released.
In July, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, a California Democrat on the committee, said the group intends to speak with Ornato again.
It's still unclear if Ornato will eventually address Hutchinson's claims under oath, but he is said to have privately disputed Hutchinson's claims about the conversations they shared over Trump that day.
