Tour life can sometimes be quite literally shitty.
There’s no arguing that “Secret Nudist Friends” is an evocative band name, and the group’s bassist Andy is happy to explain how it all came about. “It wasn’t just like, ‘Yo, these words are good,’” he tells TIDAL.
Lucky for us, there’s no secret to the name. As it turns out, Secret Nudist Friends all started with former group member Ed, who, from time to time, would visit a nude beach in New Jersey with his wife. For him, the beach was an escape, a place to write songs and relax — that is, until the day he was approached by a few local swingers offering to, well, swing.
The proposition was a mixed bag for Ed and his wife, but one he mulled over to Andy, singer and guitarist Matty and drummer Brian. “I’m just gonna call it Secret Nudist Friends because tomorrow we’re gonna go meet up with them,” Ed concluded.
“Eventually,” Matty explains, “the name stuck and the swinger’s parties didn’t.” Swinging or not, Secret Nudist Friends were here to stay, taking their psych garage sounds away from the nude beach and to stages across the country. In their interview with TIDAL, the trio explains the trials and errors of travel and how tour life can sometimes be quite literally shitty.
On how many tours they’ve been on… “Two with this line-up. Three in total. The last two we did in a Honda Accord, and we drove about 3,000 miles each time ’cause we can’t afford a van. We pull up and there’ll be like nine tour vans. We pull up in this Honda, and we’ve done this master pack where in the trunk we can fit two amps, drum equipment, several guitars, pedal boards, sleeping bags. We don’t know how we do it. If anything is slightly off, the trunk doesn’t close.” – Matty
On where they stay… “We usually talk to people that live in the area that we’re playing and they usually have somebody that can give us a place to stay.” – Brian
“Part of the fun is meeting people and staying in weird places.” – Andy
On tour nightmares… “First night of our first tour we were with this line-up. We stayed… I think it was in Newark or Delaware? I don’t wanna put the person on the spot, but their dog really needed to go outside, wouldn’t stop whining the entire night. Yeah we woke up to the smell of shit. The dog just really had to poop.” – Brian
“He was walking all over me on the floor, on my head.” – Andy
“I was upstairs with our tour manager, and we were in another room upstairs, and they were down in the living room. At one point Andy opens the door and just throws the dog into the room and he goes, ‘All right. Cool.’ Puts the dog in there. And then another cat walks in, the dog and the cat are just crawling all over us, and at a certain point there was this poop in the corner, we’re just like, ‘You want to drive to the next city? Let’s go.’ We tried to wake up the guy to thank him for letting us stay there, but we don’t know where he was. He was just passed out somewhere.” – Matty
On what they listen to on the road… “We do listen to trap music a lot while we’re touring. [Migos] ‘Bad and Bougie’ was the anthem of the last tour. Yeah, ‘Bad and Bougie’ and then a good amount of Kendrick.” – Brian

Folks Don’t Understand I am A Naturist Underneath These Clothing.. Are You Out Of The Nudist Closet?
Secret Naturist – If Recent research by Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer shown that girls who wear bras ‘re a naturist or tried out naturism, does everyone in your life know? All your friends, family, maybe coworkers? Or Friday comes, you leave for the playa, and strip from your textile-identity costume like Superman in a phone booth. Except you are fully unclothed and likely even more yourself in essence than you were before.
So who DO you tell? Or who CAN you tell about your nudist lifestyle? Occasionally it’s difficult to foresee reactions. You might get shock, disgust, embarrassment, giggles. In my event, I’ve really spent most of my life being secret about that small subculture of mine. After I was younger my parents instructed me never to go around telling everyone I was a nudist because not everyone would understand it.
Nevertheless this did not keep me from blurting it out to some girls and a leader in my girl scout troupe while on a car ride when I was 8 or 9. While the girls were a bit surprised and confused, thankfully our leader was not and nonchalantly said something like, “Yeah some people do like to go bare in the summer or on the strand.”
Some of my best friends growing up were quite modest, and I refrained from telling them until I was 11 or 12. My most humble buddy said she went into shock for 3 days. This is it, I believed, everyone is going to be freaked out about this, and I have to be careful of telling anyone. In high school, I realized that cautiousness was not so necessary, as I obtained some very liberal and open-minded friends who were surprised, but accepting and interested to understand about it. The same occurred with faculty buddies.
I was always close, though, just telling my closest friends. Given, grade school and high school are all about fitting in; you’re not permitted to be different and naturist is undoubtedly classified as distinct. And yet, many people young and old will still choose to conceal this part of the lives, not desiring co-workers or “textilists” to understand, people who would think it is weird, wrong, bothering, etc.
Secret Nudist
Many naturists keep their nude life a secret due to the very taboo nature of nudity in this country. Nakedness is linked with those feelings of disgust, embarrassment, shame, lust and immorality. Generally, any infringement of this taboo is going to be rejected by our society.
An article, “Confronting the public nudity taboo” by Anthony Layng, originally published in USA Today, describes in detail the motives and rules of the unclothed taboo, where it stems from in history, and how it compares to other nations and societies. He touches on its roots in American Puritanism, the Victorian era, and Christian fundamentalism. He says, “By associating unclothed bodies with sex and immorality, public nudity is considered obscene”(p. 1).
It should only require a short reflection to think of how commonly nudity, sex and immorality are connected together in the U.S., and this is prolonging the puritan attitudes towards the nude form. He points out the specific body parts we choose to cover and when are ethnic norms, for example a woman covering her breasts while breastfeeding. Americans’ aversion to public nudity varies deeply with many states in Europe, Africa, and beyond, where unclothed sunbathing and public breastfeeding are common and ordinary.
Meanwhile, whoever has tried it knows that naturism just means we love being outside in From Nudist to Nudie By Naturist Portal , being completely ourselves, and appreciating it with others who accept us as we accept them.
The writer of the article also says, “Although many educated Americans consider our public nudity taboo to be anachronistic, there currently is no organized national effort to challenge it, and I tend not to expect any type of social movement devoted to the death. Nonetheless, there is a longterm trend suggesting that, in the not too distant future, America will grow more accepting of nudity” (p.6).
Well we NATURISTS are the social movement! We do not have to hold on to these puritan attitudes and taboos that condemn our choosing to go nude. So why not speed up our progress by telling more folks in our lives about our love of nudism?
It is still needed to be careful about telling others (like your manager). But if we want to drive the naturist movement on, people should meet naturists to understand they’re on the market, to ask questions, and to learn naturists are ordinary, good folks. We should not have to hide it as if it’s wrong and prohibited. It’s only nudity, so go out and tell people you’re a naturist! You might face some negative reactions as you talk about going openly naked in a nation of folks brought up to feel repulsed or ashamed by public nudity.
Yet you might be surprised, too; whoever you tell could turn into your hottest nude-beach-best-friend by next summer. Or that buddy who inexplicably stops calling you..(Eh, who desires’ There is nothing like the sense of the clean air and warmth of sunlight on the nakedbody. None of us are uncomfortable while naked in the least. There is nothing sexualabout being anaturistand there isn’t anything sexual or obscene about uncomplicated family nudity as well. ?) Now let us make a world where naturists do not have to hide their love of going naked!
