Lady Angeline Dudley is on her way to town for the season. It is to be her first season and her brother, The Duke of Tresham, is to meet her at the Rose and Crown Inn and carry her to his home in London. Naturally Tresham is late. The view from her room is restricted and she will never see or hear his carriage when it arrives. Surely there is no harm in leaving her maid to sleep and popping down to the taproom where the window affords a more promising view? Edward Ailsury, Earl of Heyward, is more than a little annoyed. He has been quietly enjoying his ale in a public taproom while waiting for his mother's ancient carriage to be readied. A boldly dressed young woman, obviously a lady, has just entered the room and positioned herself in front of the window with her posterior provocatively propped in front of him. She ought not be alone. She ought not be propped up like that. And, pink of that tone ought to be illegal. Edward contemplates getting up and taking his leave when Lord Windrow a rake of the first order enters the room. Lord Windrow admires the view and expresses his appreciation much to Angeline's horror and Edwards disgust. When Edward sends Windrow off with a flea in his ear Angeline is properly smitten and Edward is thoroughly disgusted. And so begins the story of the nineteen year old ninny and the dusty old stick; and that is precisely what the story would have amounted to in less capable hands. Those who have been fortunate enough to read Ms. Balogh's prior novels know that her great talent lies in creating fully rounded, complex characters. In some of her novels the pace of the story has been impacted by the focus on the characters internal struggles. This has been especially notable in the first novel in a new series. I am happy to say that this book is an exception. The reader is able to fully understand and sympathize with both Angeline and Edward and also enjoy a sweetly innocent tale of young love. I have to admit that my preferences run more toward the damaged soul protagonists and I was doubtful for the first few chapters of this novel. Cotton-headed butterflies and righteous rectors are not my favorite characters and I was a bit afraid that was exactly what these two were going to turn out to be. Of course, I need not have worried. When is the last time Ms. Balogh has given us a cardboard cutout? Yes, Angeline is young and, yes, she is certainly brightly adorned but it turns out that those feathers hide a, heretofore sheltered and very insecure bird. Edward is less a stick and more a support beam for his entire family. He is so heavily relied on that he has forgotten what it is to live for himself. Ms. Balogh also manages to deftly introduce a cast of characters we are sure to see in future novels. The introductions are not so heavy handed that their stories are mostly told nor are they so numerous and slight that you forget them as soon as you turn the page. A deft hand indeed! (Note: two of the characters featured in this novel have been seen in the first two books in the series, published years ago (The Duke and his brother)

More than a Mistress/No Man's Mistress

There is one other issue I feel I must address and that is the publication of Ms. Balogh's latest novels in hardcover form. It is certainly more expensive to buy these books and that is, to put it bluntly, a bummer. That said, there is not a finer writer actively writing in this genre. The switch to hardcover is a tip of the hat to her talent and for that I applaud the publishers while lamenting the expense to me. Highly Recommended.

Such a delightful pairing! It's so true that Edward and Angeline were perfect for each other! She is super sweet and he is so cute and starchy!! ::rubbing hands together excitedly and with an absurd amount of glee:: There is much more depth to them than there could and would be in the hands of a less talented author; Balogh is able to take them far beyond the caricatures or stereotypes that they could have so easily become. FYI: another misleading romance book summary: there is no "marriage to avoid scandal," which the summary implies—Edward does feel that he has compromised Angeline, but that's because he's such a silly "stick in the mud" (whom we ADORE!!). The lack of 5 stars is because of two things. First, the supposed love triangle that might be/might not be between Edward and Eunice, and the angst/annoyance I felt along with it when Angeline decides to push the star-crossed lovers together, even though she's in love with him herself. Second, I didn't like the idea they decide on at the end; to me, it felt completely contrived, as if Balogh only did it because it would then line them up with how she portrays them in Books 1 and 2—both of which take place after this one and feature Angie and Edward already together as a married couple. (To read more about what I mean by this, find my review on Goodreads and check-out the hidden spoiler I included there). RECOMMENDATIONS. Below are a list of HRs with similar romance couples/pairings, featuring reserved heroes paired with expressive and outgoing heroines. I'm listing them in order of similarity, not rating. 1.

The Scoundrel's Honor (Sinful Brides, #2)

by Christ Caldwell (4.5 stars) EXCERPT. But Lord, he thought just before he got up to face the day, both Eunice and his female family members were about as wrong as they could possibly be. He and Lady Angeline Dudley were about as suited to each other as day is to night. It was a poor comparison, of course. For night and day were two sides of the same coin. One could not exist without the other. They were the perfect balance of opposites, the perfect harmony of nature taking its course. Night and day worked perfectly together, in fact. Damnation!

Regency romance with sex. This is 3rd in the series, but it's really a full length prequel to the first two books. I wasn't really getting into this story at first, but I ended up enjoying it. This Angeline & Edward's story. Edward isn't really an alpha hero. Beta for sure, but stiff & stodgy. He's planning on marrying his best friend, Eunice. A bluestocking spinster who is as practical & boring as he is. With Angeline it's love at first sight. For Edward, it takes time for him to fall in love. Although he does lust after her. Angeline is pretty annoying in the other 2 books, so I wasn't really looking forward to this one. She's really warmhearted & generous. Her self esteem has taken a beating over the years, first by her mother & then by a succession of governesses. She believes she's a "careless, unladylike, frivolous, chatterbox". Beanpole also shows up frequently as a physical description. She's such a nice person, she makes friends with Eunice, who she thinks is Edward's true love & tries to get them together. MB wisely refrains from making Eunice a prosy bore & the villainess of the book. Instead provides her with a secondary romance of her own. All in all a good romance from one of the Queens of romance!

Not Mary's best but worth a read if you like her

I have been a fan of Mary Balogh for years. She doesn't go in for bedroom gymnastics and this book is no exception. Except, like other reviewers I'm quite certain there would have been no pre-marital sex at all for this couple. I feel the scene was put in to explain the book's title as well as make it fit in with Lady Angeline's brothers' own stories. Perhaps too it could be that publishers insist on it as they seem to think we all want to read about a couple copulating whether it works with the storyline or not. It was quite a nice book although I did find myself speed reading quite a lot of the thoughts about this and that and the effect their behaviour may have had on the other. Some of it was quite repetitive. For this reason I give it only three stars. Mary is perfectly capable of writing five star books, I know as I have quite a lot of them. This isn't her best. However, I did like Angeline and Edward and thoroughly enjoyed the second division romance between Lord Windrow and Eunice which I felt could have made a good book in its own right.

Beautiful Story

I am relatively new to Mary Balogh and actually read the second book in this trilogy first. I loved the Dukes story and almost let myself be put off reading this one by some negative reviews. I couldn't disagree with them more . This was a wonderful story of two delightful people who were not necessarily all that they appeared to the public. Edward is a serious young man who feels the heavy weight if his unexpected responsibility as an earl and having seen the poor example set by his older brother is frightened of embracing life. Angeline loves her brothers but does not want to marry anyone remotely like them or her awful father. Edward represents stability ,loyalty and gentlemanly qualities - how she persuades him to view her as his perfect partner is utterly delightful. The minor characters were lovely too- no spoilers but there's more than one happy ending. Wonderful epilogue !

I have enjoyed many Mary Balogh books but I particularly liked this one. Reminded me most of Georgette Heyer's wonderful books. More of London's season and perhaps less of the traumas of one or other of the main characters which the author's books usually have. I read this after the other Mistress books and wondered if it would lose something because it was out of sync. Actually it made everything fall better in to place. A really enjoyable read. I may now thumb through the other two Mistress books to remind myself of what came next.

excellent read as always!

As with her other books The Secret Mistress is a fantastic read. What makes it perhaps a little more delightful is that as it's a prequel you get to see the other characters, the Dudley brothers, as they were and from another perspective. It is lovely to find out more about Angeline and how her marriage to Hayward came about. And the happy ending is simply Devine! Another aspect of the book I really enjoyed was when we were taken away from the main story of Lady Angeline and Hayward to that of his friend Eunice and her courtship. It was a nice touch. All in all well worth a read if you love regency romance!

Quite fun, pity about the inaccuracy

The romance at the centre of the novel is quite a good read, a contrast which we meet in other Balogh novels between a lively woman and a serious man committed to duty. The secondary romance is much more interesting as the seriousness/lightheartedness is the other way round. Unfortunately, this romance involves a heroine who could not have existed, since she is described as the (apparently legitimate) daughter of a Cambridge don (fellow of a college) at a time when fellows were not allowed to be married and married fellows had to resign.
