French-door refrigerators blend functionality and form. They feature stylish double doors that reveal an enormous fridge on top and a freezer drawer below. These refrigerators stand out due to their unique features, such as through-the-door dispensers and higher-end ice makers.
We consulted Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the right home. They evaluated storage capacity as well as layout and energy efficiency, among other features.
GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator
The name implies that GE's Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Apart from that minor flaw however, this refrigerator is a fantastic choice. It has a large freezer compartment which is uncommon for counter-depth French door fridges. It also has a large capacity for frozen food items compared to other models.
The fridge has 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment has 18.5 cubic feet of space, which is roughly on par for a French door fridge costing this much. It also has a decent sized ice maker packed into the left door, though it's not the biggest I've seen.
You can adjust the shelves in both compartments to create a a custom storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS also looks attractive. Its LED lighting is a nice touch, and the in-door storage bins come with the third shelf, which folds down to make it possible to store large items. The drawers come with temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, however I found their textured plastic coatings a bit rough on the fingers.
The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you would expect from a refrigerator in this price range. It has Wi-Fi, app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is available for iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere across the globe. It also has a lot of customization options. It also gives you notifications when a door is left open, when your fridge or freezer is in need of defrosting, and when it's time to change the filter.
It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS came with Precise Fill it's an option in other GE fridges that allows you to preset how many cups of water you'd like to dispense at once. The fridge displays a countdown to display how much water is left but it's not as effective as Precise fill.
Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator
Created to appear like a seamless piece of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is a standout. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and two compressors to ensure the best preservation of food. The ice maker is one of the most efficient we've ever tested and produces a pyramid-shaped ice that is low in use of water. This fridge is ideal for a small household or kitchenette that needs a built-in appearance and top-of-the best food preservation.
This refrigerator was rated as the most efficient in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating more than a fraction a degree--this is key in preventing freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the temperature it was set within an hour, and maintained the temperature throughout our tests.
Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to control and monitor the refrigerator remotely using your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is expensive however, it offers excellent features and functionality at a reasonable cost.
It is important to know the limitations of your fridge. It has a small space for shelves, so you may need to be creative when it comes to storing large items. Also the shelves aren't completely sprillproof, and can easily be damaged or stained by sharp objects. The trays are easily removed from the fridge. However, they should be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator
The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need lots of space within the space of a compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the refrigerator has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized door bins at each door, two rows of shelves for spill-capture and a set more spacious drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to give taller items more room. There's also a full-width storage drawer for products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.
This refrigerator has a freezer with an ice maker making it easy to move the frozen ice as needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers that help to organize the place of your items. It also comes with a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and a separate ice storage bin.
Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a simple method to monitor your fridge and manage it, particularly when you're away from home.
But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't necessarily enhance the overall performance of the refrigerator. The refrigerator took longer to defrost food and chill it than some others we tried. This is likely due to the greater capacity.
Another issue with this refrigerator is its doors. They have handles that are sunken on the front, which allow smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to guide shut without slamming them. It would have been better to have front-mounted handles.
The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a excellent choice for those who want to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with an efficient layout. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model, and it cools evenly and has a great layout. It's also a little cheaper than the best counter-depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, which helps make it a desirable choice.
Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator
This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a great choice for those looking for a French-door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic design that's not as visually striking like some of the competitors, but it has enough features to make it a solid option. Its most important feature, the temperature adjustable drawer, helps to keep food items such as vegetables and meat fresher longer. It also comes with a huge ice maker as well as a water dispenser.
The "Chill Drawer", which is located over the two crisper bins, is another nice feature. This drawer lets you divert part of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can keep food items that need extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using an outside slider that is located inside the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.
In my tests, I found that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different areas of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the middle, top and bottom of the refrigerator did not differ much from 38 degrees. This is a great performance but isn't quite at the top of our rankings.
This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also connect this fridge to an intelligent thermometer to get more precise measurements of your fridge's internal temperature.
The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It does a great job of removing streaks and fingerprints even when compared to the glossy stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
