The System

The screenwriter representation system -- the specific roles that the literary agent and the manager play in the writer career, the specific relationships that produce representation, and the specific expectations that the represented writer has of the agent and manager and vice versa -- is the professional infrastructure that the screenplay market requires and that the aspiring screenwriter needs to understand before they approach the representation market.

The Roles

The roles: the agent is the licensed talent representative who negotiates the deals and whose agency agreement governs the specific financial relationship. The manager is the unregulated career advisor whose relationship with the writer is governed by the management agreement. The agent submits to buyers. The manager develops the writer and builds the career strategy. The two work in combination on the writers who have both.
