Velma Dinkley and Daphne Blake have been a part of the Scooby-Doo crew for more than fifty years. But how much do you know about the characters?
Velma Dinkley and Daphne Blake have been a part of the Scooby-Doo crew for more than fifty years. On the surface, they seem nothing alike, as Velma appears to be shy and nerdy and Daphne is a gorgeous fashionista, but their characters are very much alike.
They are both smart and resourceful women who throughout the years they were developed into strong female characters. Here we've listed some of the most interesting facts about Velma and Daphne that will come as a big surprise to many.
Scooby, Velma, Shaggy , Fred, and Daphne first crossed paths with Johnny Bravo in the episode Bravo Dooby-Doo . In the first minutes of the episode, Velma shows little signs of sympathy towards Johnny but because their characters have nothing in common she gives up on the idea.
Throughout the episode, Shaggy and Scooby bump into Velma and Johnny, and as they trip over they both lose their glasses. Here we can hear Velma's famous phrase "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!" where at the same time Johnny says "My glasses! I can't be seen without my glasses!". An iconic moment.
Daphne might seem naive and sweet on the outside but she possesses some badass skills that were very useful in her mystery-solving days. She can pick any kind of lock with anything that is pointy, she has a talent for surfing, singing, and plays the piano.
At a very young age, Daphne learned how to ride a motorcycle and this helped a lot with her flexibility. She thinks fast, reacts quickly and this makes her the perfect teammate during a dangerous situation.
Velma is known to be extremely smart and brave but not many know of her hidden weakness. On her fifth birthday, she met Bobo the Clown who was hired as entertainment for her party. Sadly at one point during the party, Bobo completely destroyed all of Velma's books and encyclopedias, which frightened Velma more than anything.
Throughout the years the fear developed into a phobia until she faced the case where she dealt with the Menacing Metallic Clown . After solving the case, Velma finally defeated her phobia and understood that it is only a scary mask.
Daphne has a different family background than the rest of the Scooby crew since she comes from money .
Despite the fact that she had a possible security blanket, Daphne chose to live her life as an independent woman that on times struggled financially as much as the other members of the crew. She worked as a babysitter and later on she worked for her father as a manager of his arcade.
For such a small woman Vilma has developed and trained muscles which makes her extremely strong. She began practicing martial arts at a very young age. Over time she perfected her skill and on various occasions, she was able to lift three to four people at the same time while she held her balance perfectly.
This has helped her and her friends avoid many unpleasant moments throughout her adventures and mystery solving moments. This proves that Velma is an incredible asset to the Scooby-Doo team.
The physical appearance of Daphne varied from 1969 all the way to 1991 . The detail that was changed most often was the color of her eyes , depending on which animator was working on the show.
The color range was black, blue, green, and purple. One more thing that varied was her pink pantyhose, over time they were switched to a more nude color, and other times the classic pink was returned.
Velma has shown incredible talent while solving mysteries with the Scooby-Doo team such as her ability to distinguish fake from real jewels. Her knowledge of the Morse Code has also been of great use a few times and this peculiar skill Velma learned as a child when she was a part of the Eagle Scouts.
One last unexpected thing is the love and interest she has for ice hockey. Her deep knowledge enables her to discuss the sport with professional players and she even manages to represent the United States against Russia.
In the early '60s, there was a famous sitcom called The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis which lasted 4 seasons. In short, the show was about a teenager who did everything to get power, money, and women. In the same show, there was also a young beautiful woman called Thalia Menninger which was portrayed by the actress Tuesday Weld.
Later on, the animators who created the character of Daphne Blake were inspired by Weld 's beauty, grace, and style which are characteristics that can be noticed immediately when comparing the two.
When Daphne had time off from solving mysteries she worked as an investigative journalist. The first job she had was when the Scooby-Doo crew took some time off and Daphne found herself in a job as a freelance reporter where she worked with Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy-Doo.
The other job in journalism was more stable, she hosted her very own show (which was filmed and produced by Fred) where she talked about all sorts of things and topics.

Velma and Daphne sharing an inside joke.
Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley are the two girls of Mystery Inc.

Daphne and Velma get along and work together very well. Daphne is often the first to understand Velma's blunt way of speaking and can usually calm her down when Velma is overwhelmed. They are also well matched intellectually. Velma being booksmart and Daphne being more creative makes them a well balanced problem solving team on their own.

When Velma was accused of being a thief at Coolsville Junior High School , Daphne gave her a makeover, pretending they were cousins, so the Scooby-Doo Detective Agency could search for clues there together. [1]

Daphne told Fred she was splitting off alone with Velma, which momentarily phased him, but quickly brushed it off. They then went into an espionage-like search of the Scooby Snax Factory . [2]

After Verona Dempsey had been caught, Fred Jones still couldn't figure out that she was an analogue to Velma, enticing a quiet laugh from Velma and Daphne. [3]

They shared a house together in Coolsville , when not on the road. ( A Scooby-Doo Valentine .)

After the gang went to Egypt to visit Velma, Daphne hugged her. [4]

They solved the mystery of the Fortius Statue (who was revealed to be Jack Riggins ) while the guys were busy with the World Invitational Games .

Velma got jealous of Daphne and Shannon Lucas ' budding friendship, and when it was assumed that Daphne scored higher on the astronaut training test. But, when Shannon was exposed as the culprit and arrested, they made up afterwards, as Daphne acknowledged that Velma is her real best friend. [5]

Velma got jealous of the budding friendship between Daphne and Stephanie McMahon . [6]

This needs a stretch. (Feel free to remove when satisfied of completion.) Needed : * Dynamic. * History is incomplete.

Scooby-Doo's Daphne and Velma are iconic mystery-solving characters. And, here are the reasons why we love the both of them.
For decades, fans of all ages have consumed Scooby-Doo in its various forms of media: from direct-to-video films, television series, live-action theatrical films, and a theatrical animated film that will be released later this year.
There's a lot to love about Scooby-Doo : it has its own charm, and in certain cases it's not afraid to subvert its own popular tropes. But by far, the things we tend to love most are its characters: from the always hungry Shaggy to danger prone Daphne, there's a character for everyone.
Today, we'll be focusing on the two women of Mystery Incorporated: Daphne and Velma. These two young ladies couldn't be more different from each other, but they've proven many times over the years their friendship is unbreakable. From Daphne's fashion sense to Velma's logic, we're breaking down five reasons we love Daphne and five more why we love Velma.
Every member of Mystery Incorporated has a passion for mystery solving, but Velma enjoys it most of all. Throughout the franchise's history, it's often Velma or Fred that gleefully announce they have a mystery to solve.
Velma enjoys putting all the pieces together to form a clear picture of the truth behind whatever strange goings-on the gang investigates. She even has a blog dedicated to sleuthing, and at one point had her own bookstore which was filled with mystery and horror novels.
“I enjoy being a girl,” Daphne declares with a slight shrug, after using her make-up tools to free the gang from a trap in Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed . It's a quick line, but one that encompasses Daphne's core trait: her femininity.
Daphne is often concerned with her own appearance and makes the most effort to look nice out of the entire gang. She always has fashion advice for whoever may need it and often uses what's on hand (make-up, purse, and one time her jacket) to aid her in her adventures.
Velma is easily the most skeptical of the gang. She's highly logical and enjoys getting to the bottom of things. In Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Velma's logic allows her to land on the easiest explanation for things and wasn't afraid to admit that the most logical conclusion sometimes was that wherever they were was truly haunted.
Moreover, we appreciate Velma's logic because of how it allows her to enjoy various forms of science — most often, computer science. It's always refreshing to find female characters with a passion for STEM, especially such a classic character within our pop culture.
Of all the characters in Scooby-Doo, Daphne is probably the most self-confident. She's aware of her own limitations, but she doesn't dwell on them, and often goes out to get what she wants.
Daphne also unabashedly enjoys how she looks, without ever coming off as snobbish or arrogant. As a matter of fact, Daphne's confidence doesn't come from making others feel less-than either. She acknowledges her beauty without denigrating those around her.
Throughout Scooby-Doo's long history, Velma has always been the leas
