In days of yore, the “Scold’s Bridle” was a common punishment for ladies whose words caused offence, either to their husbands or neighbours. The purpose of the bridle was to prevent the offender from speaking further oaths or curses, nagging or gossiping!
One such example is currently on display at Pokeham Museum! Of course it is!
So why is sweet Miss Poppy uncomfortably strapped, naked, into the fiendish device, and on public display in the courtyard of the museum?
Apparently that fellow, Luke Dupperfrock, has alleged that Poppy accused him, most unfairly, of being a nasty, creepy pervert! How rude!
Of course, this being Pokeham, the ancient apparatus has been modified to cause maximum discomfort and humiliation to the victim. The variety of leather straps, and ropes ensure the talkative female is utterly defenceless - and vulnerable to all manner of horrid abuse!
